its been great to have a little break from the station and to focus on other parts of the layout. but i always seem to end up back at south shields. enjoy
This is the first time I’ve seen this end of the layout and it is spectacular! I absolutely love those 39 steps. The handrail and final weathering really finish it off. Thank you for sharing. All the best from Chandwell. -Michael.
Hi Michael. thank you for your kind words. i think it is about time that the other areas of the layout do get seen. as being stuck in one area such as the station, can be a bit monotonous at times. thanks again for commenting very much appreciate it my friend. i do admire you N gaugers. all the best Tony
A busy start to the New Year! Steps look great, is that a challenge to run off all that Christmas excess food on! The landings really add character, brilliant. I am fine with the short walk to the next station, will save them some money; memories ... as a school kid used to walk a mile to save my bus money whilst "waiting for the next bus"! All the best for the year, happy modelling. Stephen
You can say that Stephen. you could say that as i think i have put on a few pounds over the crimbo period. school days i almost forgot about those. we never got bus fare. we just walked anyway to school anyway. for John Williamson street to Westoe comprehensive must have about 3 quaters of mile to the school. those were the days, no worries. just seemed like everyday was play time. especially in the summers. thanks again for commenting......best wishes Tony
Your layout is really coming along so nicely with the new station, the small cameos and the great level of scratch built details - all very pleasing! Cheers, Joachim

Hi Hugh mate. i was just talking about you and the station you are building to another you tuber, Paul at Galgorm hall, as we are all building stations. look forward to seeing your layout coming along in 2021...thanks again for commenting..........all the best Tony
Hi just discovered this channel, your layout is fantastic and I love that it's Tyne based, especially with all the levels, stairways, interesting back lanes and alleys that Newcastle presents. A great inspiring place for any model maker. I particularly love walking down onto Keyside beneath Tyne Bridge and see all the tall old buildings that it passes over. Thanks for sharing. 👍🚂
Hi Alex. Welcome to the North Eastern. i dont have the Newcastle's central station which i would love to made for the layout. but i do have Newhassle. which is the mainline station on the layout which is long over due for a upgrade. thanks for commenting. all the best Tony
My father worked on the north side railway and he started at Tyne Dock. He lived with his family above the Turks Head pub got the train from Sheilds to the Dock every day. Worked for 61 years and was chief clerk at Forth Banks when he retired
Interesting Stuart. 61 years getting the train from shields to Tyne dock. he must have seen all the changes from ENUs to DMUs. thank you for sharing your memories.......all the best Tony

Thank you John for commenting. i thought i could make the steps and then glue them instead of gluing one step at a time. it worked out in the end. the water area will a project on its own. i will get there eventually.....thanks again buddy..........Tony

Hello Tony, as usual astonishing creativity , the all video is just wonderful, thanks again we all learn from you. A great start for the new year cheers all the best.👍👏😉
Morning Tony, I'm a bit behind this week, its lovely to see a different part of the layout it reminds us of the whole area you've modeled. Those steps are brilliant. 39 nine steps, Richard Haney, one of my favourite films. I've got three videos and one TV production of the story. Nice handrail Tony, must have taken a bit of time to get it right, but really worth the effort. You continue to stay safe see you on the next one Eddy xx.
Hi Eddy, ah you made it, just in time for this weeks preview phew. its one of my favourite stories the 39 steps. working on other parts of the layout is a change, but is as good as a rest. back to station next week. i am currently working on the signal box for south shields. so it will interesting to see how they turn out. stay safe and take care till next week.........best wishes Tony
Hi Tony another well built project of your 39 steps, perhaps you could have a figure of John Buchan who wrote that at the top or Alfred Hitchcock at the bottom who directed the film (scene of film crew!!). Always a pleasure to watch please keep them coming...
Now that's an idea Barry. i might pinch that one. thanks again for commenting. see you next week. hopefully the signal box will be finished in time for the next video....oops........stay safe .......Tony

Hi Steve. First week in and you are asking for more. more. your second name is not Twist by any chance... lol. well there is 51 weeks left in the year. so in theory, that's if all goes to plan 51 more videos. hope that is enough for ya Steve. all the best my friend..............Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Dog Leap Stairs go from the Keep, down the side of the railway viaduct to Dean Street. We have lots of Stairs in the Quayside area. Cheers, George
Had the urge to hideout at a Scottish croft with John Laurie 😃 Superb steps Tony and nice to see a bit more of the layout. If you ever want to move house give us first refusal!!! Thanks for the fascinating watch as ever ( that Metcalf 'South Shields' must be in production by now) all the best, Darren👍
Hi Darren. as i am writing this comment i am listening to Railway Bridge Of The Silvery Tay by John Laurie. very creepy poem, as the bridge callapsed 1879. no sign of Metcalfe getting in touch. but if there was a kit it would have saved me the trouble of building the station. just joking...lol. about moving house. you will be first in the cue my friend.....all the best Tony
Great Tony, very impressive I can't imagine constructing all those stairs myself without the w hole lot caving in!!!. Handrail is good too. I recently caught up with the garage construction series. This was one of the first of your videos when I started watching you. It was good to revisit it and work out it's location.
Hi Peter. the garage is i think is one of my best kit bash jobs. oh the Metcalfe shops turned into a pub. was my first kit bash. there is so much to see around the layout maybe, i should do another layout tour.....thanks again Tony
Good to give yourself the extra room in front of Tyne Dock, I wonder what will appear there? And good to see the viaduct developing. It will be nice to see yet another 'bridge on the Tyne'. Though presumably that will be a tributary? 13:25 Spooky! Nice job with those steps, though you wouldn't get away with it nowadays. That would be some tumble if you mis-stepped. Still just left yourself room for that cupola turret on the end of the hotel building ;) Keep safe indeed Tony, you still have a lot to do.
Hi Chazzy. i am thinking of a taxi rank. and maybe another building. i remember the old tyne dock station where you had that long ramp to the island platform. it seemed to go on forever when you are a young toddler. yep years and years of work left to do on the layout. thanks again. all the best Tony
Great work as all way, love THE 39 STEPS, hope that they do not get VERTIGO at the top, there is no SHADOW OF A DOUBT that you are THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH about model building having us all SPELLBOUND and in a FRENZY with you work. Now that the station is on the DOWNHILL side of being built, I CONFESS there is a great view from the REAR WINDOW where you can see STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. I am THE WRONG MAN to do work as good as yours, INOTORIOUS go PSYCHO and lose the FAMILY PLOT with my modeling and have been known to DIAL M OF MURDER. THE BIRDS seem to be missing from you layout. take care, stay safe, and have fun Tony NORTH BY NORTHWEST lol
Banging comment mate. love Hitchcock films. my favourite one is missing The Birds..and not forgetting Psycho. Stay safe my friend.........thanks again Tony
great start to the new year tony happy new year all the best for 2021 very nice video as always enjoyed stay safe and well cheers for now al 🚂😊👍👍👍😁😁🙋♂️🙋♂️🥶
Hi AL. and happy new year to you my friend. i thought i start the new year with a work out. so it seemed fitting to put stairs in. but i got tired half way up. and decided to run some trains instead. its the only way. all the best. take care Tony
Thank you Susannah. the odd jobs do build up . and i do seam to be creating more odd jobs by adding little extensions. so beware of odd jobs. they can build up into a mountain of odd jobs. lol. its great to take a break from the station. but really i should be getting on with it. thanks again for commenting best wishes Tony
Ah, another little masterpiece knocked up on the side by Mr. North Eastern. Great job as always Tony! The 39 Steps is a great book if ever you have the chance to read it Tony (if you haven’t already) by John Buchan. I read it many years ago as a teenager and I think I’ll buy it again. I prefer the Robert Powell film, great shots of the trains and so on. Thanks as always Tony, John
Hi John, thank you for commenting. i have not read the book, but if i ever run out of things to do on the layout i will read the book. i have seen 2 versions of the movie. the one with Kenneth more. and the one with Robert Powell. but i side with you on that. Robert Powell is the better version. but i have not seen the Alfred Hitchcock version 1935. thanks again stay safe . Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN I did see the Alfred Hitchcock version as a young lad, and much later the one with Robert Powell as i didn't remember the story. By the way I to think out loud and talk to my self I'm still laughing about your comment. I have no lady and was born in 47, fells like yesterday thought and French to top it all. GB love what you're doing.
Your skills, drive and results just keep on rolling from great to brilliant to inspirational. Love seeing your vids. 🙂 They're really high teir. I think this layout is going to be the next Tetley Mills. 😁
Ah Tetley Mills what a lovely layout. I don't think i am going to be on that level. because every single building is scratch built. and it took years and years to build that layout. so far i have only scratched built two buildings the station, not yet completed. and the vicars cottage. but yes i see what you mean. thank you for your kind words.........stay safe and all the best Tony
Its a bit hit and miss jumping from for section to another. but each little bit i do. get me ever closer to finishing the layout.......thanks again cheer's Tony
Not so bad to have a break from the amount of the building you have completed with South Shields Station and linking others parts of the build. I may have another corner that I’m sure will receive your modelling skills in the future🤔☺️
The 39 steps! There's a story to be told on that one Tony. How penicillin reached the North West. I'm sure Mrs Armitage would take a leading role along with her sister. as un witting drug mules. Great work as always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Splendid stuff agin mi’ old mucker! 😎 The town scene certainly adds a bit of depth but that is all put in the shade by the new stairwell! 🤓 That is superb mate. Love the way if curves, love that you put in landings (so often people don’t) and as for the handrail! 🎖 Hope you had a nice Xmas mate. Let’s hope the new year is kinder to us all! 🍀👍🍻
Thank you Tim me old mate. Christmas was ok, like most of us quiet. maybe next year we will all have a better Christmas. hopefully back to normal life. but until then we carry on regardless. i am so glad that me hobby has kept us going through out the pandemic...stay safe thanks again for commenting, Tony
Hi Tony. Well, this was a nice surprise when I came online. Your additions look great, but I'm equally interested in listening to your thoughts and musings as you work. I notice that I've started talking to myself as I work: my Partner has passed comment to the effect that I've started chuntering... well at least she tolerates my hobby - it helps when she also has craft hobbies, so kindred spirits. Brilliant way of building steps on a curve, btw. Go well, Roy
Hi Roy. I am afraid that's what happens to us when we become model railway enthusiasts. we end up talking to ourselves. even when the camera is not turned on. i am talking away. how can i do this and that. so welcome to the club. yes we must think of the ladies in our lives. i split my time up between Mrs T and my layout. i spend 2 hours a night up in the loft while the soaps are on. then come down at 9 so we can watch murder mysteries together. keeping the equalibrium......works for me...all the best and stay safe my friend.......cheer's Tony
Hi David. no need for apologies my friend. My dear Watson. oops wrong story... its has got me down from the roof. i need one last piece of material so i continue with roof. you see the whole roof has to sit on a plate or pad. that sits on the walls either side of the platforms and then build up from there. so i should start that in the next couple of weeks. thanks again for commenting...cheer's Tony
Happy new year Paul. i had break for a couple days over the holidays. and when i got back into it i was quite sure what i wanted to tackle. that's why there is so many little bits on the go. the step were a tricky little job to do. thanks again for commenting. catch up again next week....all the best Tony
Thank you John. bit of a fiddle as you have seen. in future i will keep all my walls straight maybe. thanks again for commenting very much appreciate them.......cheer's Tony
Dont know what John Buchan would make of your steps but I think they are utterly realistic Tony. I especially liked the handrail. It must have been very fiddley soldering the lugs on. I dont think you should worry about 2 stations close together. Here in Maidstone both the LCDR and the SER had stations 10 minutes walk away. Are you now adding extension boards to your extensions ? It gives the lie to those who say that a railway should be planned and then you never deviate from that plan
Hi Martin. Thank you for commenting. soldering those little lugs on which little pieces of bent copper wire, were a bit of a fiddle. but those handy hands do come in handy for type of work. i am afraid i am one of those that say a model railways should be planed out properly from the start. which in truthfulness i did for the track plan. but there is more track than there is towns and scenery on the layout. so dont be surprised if in the future there is more add on's. every millimetre counts i guess. that's one of the great things about model railways. all the best and stay safe Tony
Ah Docks that reminds me Tony someone I know started a harbour/ dock scene back in 2018 at a certain persons’ suggestion 🤔😉 . Regards Fred ps nice one Tony
AH yes Fred, the dock scene must be all done by now. i thinks it time you did a update my friend. i am sure a lot of people would be interested in what you have achieved......stay safe all the best Tony
I really really like those steps. It looks top draw Tony! You are only a 'few steps' away from being a Magician. Have you thought about sponorship through Stannah? Plus I hope that old bag doesn't fall down the stairs by tripping over her grumpy old woman black prickly moustache.
Hi Ben. Those steps are the only link between the two levels at the moment. i wish i was a magician, as i would go Hey presto and the layout will be finished. the only trouble there would be no fun in that. you must have good eyesight to see the prickly moustache, lol..............thanks again cheer's Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN but imagine if you were a magician. You could choose to just 'speed things up a little' with an accidental spell here, a black cat there, and then hey presto, you have still had fun but also have time to watch re-runs of Jimmy Nail live in concert 1983 ha ha.
Thank you Ozzy. and a happy new year to you my friend. your right they do add character. once the layout is done they wont be noticed all that much. because there will be so much to detail to see. they could could get missed, unless as someone has already mentioned making a cameo on the stairs. thanks again for commenting all the best Tony
Hi Tony, as always my friend, excellent work and layout. have you ever thought of installing either a Faller or Magnarail car/transport system on your layout?...Simon
Hi Simon. happy new year my friend. fitting a road system would a chore now. you know it never entered my mind, i guess its still possible. would it work going across tracks. Oh no you have got me thinking about it. dangerous thought. all the best my friend......cheer's Tony
Nice job could have had another handrail on the other side but a bit late now .I was waiting for a ner electric train but then I noticed the third rail wasn't finished
Hi Michael. i was so ega to get the wall on i forgot about the other side fitting the had rail. never mind. the 3rd rail only goes as far as the iron girder bridge. once i have ballasted the side of the bridge then i will continue the the rail on. there is so much to do. its almost a full time job building a model railway. thanks again for commenting. Tony
Hi Collin. now that's way to big of a project for me. lol. especially when it has taken us nearly a year to build a station. lol. thanks again for commenting......cheer's Tony
I hope Mrs Simms manages to negotiate the steps safely if she has had one to many? She might slip poor women. I dare say if it is raining and the cold wind could sober her up a bit. However, I do feel a bit sorry for any one having to climb these steps with two heavy shopping bags. Just think if you dropped something from the top, say a glass bottle, of cream soda, ginger beer or tiszer, it would go all the way down to the bottom.
Hi Alan. Mrs Simms would just simply roll down the steps. after a few Cherry's. i would not like to climb those steps either in the winter.........thanks again for commenting.......cheer's Tony
Happy New Year Tony. 39 steps look great on layout & another quality build from yourself. Quick question for ya. Has your layout featured in any magazines or any other CZcams channels?
Hi. thank you for commenting very much appreciated. regarding the layout. only three people have featured the north eastern on their channel, Adi Pullen did a tribute video, which was a nice surprise. Susannah from Vollmer. on her visit did some footage and show it in a video. and lastly Dave Trians did a cameo shot of me in one of videos. as for Magazines not yet. maybe one day when the layout is a bit more presentable' as you know there are a lot of blank bits around the layout. i try and keep a low profile, but if it happens it happens.......happy new year to you and all the best Tony
Excellent TV opening presentation. However it occurs to me that with all these extensions, you are going to have to go on a diet to get around your layout! :)
I think i need more little extensions , as i did gain a bit of weight over Christmas. lol. not only that it gives me a motive to get fit. all the best Tony
Tony, What factors did you consider when you made the decision to fasten the rail directly to the bed, without any cork or foam materials between? Peter
Hi Peter, Good question. i guess with me it was always down to the sound. i love the sound the trains make across the joints in the track. its a more dense sound. if that makes sense. also if i wanted to change anything later on. it would less waste and mess. i am not knocking underlays. i think they are great if you want (A) a quite layout. (B) a higher track bed. (C) some people say it less ware and tare on the loco's and rolling stock. but i am not sure if that has been proven. do what's best for you. many thanks for your question..........stay safe all the best Tony
Hi Toney great job yet again love your work. Hope you don’t mind but just one small thing to say. Do you not think the bottom 3 steps need the handrail extending. All the best keep it up John
Hi John, thank you for commenting. you are right what i might do is just add a small hand rail to cover those three steps. i will add that little job to my ever growing long list. all the best my friend. Tony
The answer the trivia question is = The Thirty-Nine Steps location: Richard Hannay hangs from the clock face: Big Ben, Westminster, London. The Next video. see's a new signal box being built for south shields. which will keep Mr Pullever happy who can not wait to start pulling those lever's.........
Hi Tony great job at the steps towards the station the hand rail is that plastic or is it like metal or brass wire that you have used. Cheers and all the best. Nicholas.
Hi Nicholas. the hand rail is made from copper wire. which you can pick up at any good hardware store. its the same cable used on a ring main circuit. all i have done was striped back the outer sheathing to get at the copper. the wire itself is 0.8 thick almost a millimeter. which is about 3 inchs in scale terms ideal for a handrail. hope this helps my friend. all the best Tony
Your layout seems endless. Yet again the steps add that little bit of intrigue, was there ever a murder committed on them. Do we need that famous french detective. Love your layout.
Ah inspector clouseau on the scene. running down the steps with a Bumb in his hands. Bumb. yes thats what i said a Bumb. lol. might as well i have a marry poppins. John Travolta and Sandra dee. and a Fred Dibna. why not a clouseau thanks again for commenting Richard........cheer's Tony
First of the mark mate, you must be keen. I could do that create a scene around the 39 steps. ah the old Alfred Hitchcock movie from 1935. i like the 1978 version with Robert Powel. the movie has been made 4 times. each one is a good un. The 39 Steps (1935) The 39 Steps (1959) The Thirty Nine Steps (1978) The 39 Steps (2008) Thanks again for commenting Dan.................all the best Tony
Ah yes Lee. Kenneth More i forgot about that one. he gets of train on the forth bridge. yep that' is a classic......thanks again for commenting cheer's Tony
Hi, I did have a track plan on a A4 piece of paper. well it was more of a sketch. and to be honest it was not a detailed plan. the only thing i was interested in was where to put the points. and the gradient. that was important for 1 loco and to pull the maximum of 5 coahes. i think i showed the copy of the make shift plan in a video. i am not sure where it is now. stay safe all the best Tony
Hi Stuart. you are right the mentioning Tyne Dock junction as i have built the junction on the wrong side of the station. the track should divide before entering the station not as i have it. Good question though. poor planning on my part. but in saying that i don't think i would have it any other way....thanks again for commenting.....cheer's Tony

A stunning job Tony!! I love the staircase very much. It is awesome. Cheers Onno.

Brilliant job again.

Great premiere Tony really enjoyed it mate. Look forward to more of them in 2021 pretty please 👍
Hi Steve. First week in and you are asking for more. more. your second name is not Twist by any chance... lol. well there is 51 weeks left in the year. so in theory, that's if all goes to plan 51 more videos. hope that is enough for ya Steve. all the best my friend..............Tony
Job well done 👍
Thank you Angela. just another odd job done. and there are many more to come. many thanks again. stay safe......best wishes Tony
Just found this channel after Peter Dixon recommended it I’m hooked with your details 👍
Awesome, thank you!. and welcome to the channel....cheer's Tony
Stairs look great. Reminds me of Dog Leap Stairs in Newcastle :-)
Thank you for commenting. the steps you mentioned are they the ones that go down to the key side i wonder. .......all the best Tony.
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Dog Leap Stairs go from the Keep, down the side of the railway viaduct to Dean Street. We have lots of Stairs in the Quayside area. Cheers, George
Had the urge to hideout at a Scottish croft with John Laurie 😃
Superb steps Tony and nice to see a bit more of the layout. If you ever want to move house give us first refusal!!! Thanks for the fascinating watch as ever ( that Metcalf 'South Shields' must be in production by now) all the best,
Darren👍
Hi Darren. as i am writing this comment i am listening to Railway Bridge Of The Silvery Tay by John Laurie. very creepy poem, as the bridge callapsed 1879. no sign of Metcalfe getting in touch. but if there was a kit it would have saved me the trouble of building the station. just joking...lol. about moving house. you will be first in the cue my friend.....all the best Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN going to Google that poem now 🙄thanks Tony 👍👍
your welcome
Great Tony, very impressive I can't imagine constructing all those stairs myself without the w hole lot caving in!!!. Handrail is good too. I recently caught up with the garage construction series. This was one of the first of your videos when I started watching you. It was good to revisit it and work out it's location.
Hi Peter. the garage is i think is one of my best kit bash jobs. oh the Metcalfe shops turned into a pub. was my first kit bash. there is so much to see around the layout maybe, i should do another layout tour.....thanks again Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN I'd like that, is there a map/plan? I also wanted to say that I liked the buildings adjacent to the 39 steps.
Just found this channel, and I think I'm here to stay! It's hard finding fellow lner fans so I am glad I found the channel. Thanks, Lewis

Excellent work on the steps, looks great! Cheers John
Thank you John, and welcome to the North Eastern. thank again for commenting. Tony
Still just left yourself room for that cupola turret on the end of the hotel building ;)
Keep safe indeed Tony, you still have a lot to do.
Hi Chazzy. i am thinking of a taxi rank. and maybe another building. i remember the old tyne dock station where you had that long ramp to the island platform. it seemed to go on forever when you are a young toddler. yep years and years of work left to do on the layout. thanks again. all the best Tony
That all sounds great and best of all, lots of new ideas to explore.

Fantastic Tony, those steps look fabulous and ornate. Those odd jobs do add up but great fixes in the meantime. Susannah
Great work Tony those steps so remind me of Newcastle and going down them to get to the quayside
Hi Michelle. thank you for commenting. you know you are right. i just could not put a place to them before. thank you for that. best wishes Tony
Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN I did see the Alfred Hitchcock version as a young lad,
and much later the one with Robert Powell as i didn't remember the story.
By the way I to think out loud and talk to my self I'm still laughing about your comment. I have no lady and was born in 47, fells like yesterday thought and

Your skills, drive and results just keep on rolling from great to brilliant to inspirational. Love seeing your vids. 🙂
They're really high teir.
Good to see the sections coming together Tony!

Can we see a Remake of the Film coming on "39 Steps" ,
Hi Mick that would a great idea for a special. to remake the 39steps. Thanks again for commenting, all the best Tony
The 39 steps! There's a story to be told on that one Tony. How penicillin reached the North West. I'm sure Mrs Armitage would take a leading role along with her sister. as un witting drug mules. Great work as always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Thank you Gordon, you could be right there. a story around the 39 steps. has'nt that be done already.lol. stay safe and thanks again. .........Tony
Splendid stuff agin mi’ old mucker! 😎 The town scene certainly adds a bit of depth but that is all put in the shade by the new stairwell! 🤓 That is superb mate. Love the way if curves, love that you put in landings (so often people don’t) and as for the handrail! 🎖

Hi Francis, i will always try and add a little running session. i am glad you enjoyed the video. all the best Tony
Well Mr Hannay sorry Tony another interesting video and it’s got you down of the roof.
Hi David. no need for apologies my friend. My dear Watson. oops wrong story... its has got me down from the roof. i need one last piece of material so i continue with roof. you see the whole roof has to sit on a plate or pad. that sits on the walls either side of the platforms and then build up from there. so i should start that in the next couple of weeks. thanks again for commenting...cheer's Tony

great job on the stairs Tony, they look so good.
Lovely work Tony! Happy New Year!
Thank you Richard, and all the best for 202. stay safe............Tony

Hi Tony, as always my friend, excellent work and layout. have you ever thought of installing either a Faller or Magnarail car/transport system on your layout?...Simon

Tony
You’ll have to incorporate a model of the Forth Bridge now.
Hi Collin. now that's way to big of a project for me. lol. especially when it has taken us nearly a year to build a station. lol. thanks again for commenting......cheer's Tony

Hia Tony quick question have you got a track plan ? And once again brilliant update mate stay safe
Tyne Dock was a junction to Boldon and Sunderland is it portrayed on your layout
Hi Stuart. you are right the mentioning Tyne Dock junction as i have built the junction on the wrong side of the station. the track should divide before entering the station not as i have it. Good question though. poor planning on my part. but in saying that i don't think i would have it any other way....thanks again for commenting.....cheer's Tony
