- At last this video has finally been uploaded. sorry for the delay folks. the platforms took longer than i thought to make so much cutting and sanding on platform 2. as it did not meet up to the tracks as well as platform 1.
Your methods are very precise. Very informative. Thank you.
Your Welcome i am glad the videos can be of use...........cheer's Tony
Nice Video. The train Station looks fantastic
Cheer's, thank you for commenting....Tony
wonderful to watch south shields taking shape, some very interesting detailing with minimum of expense Tony, the platform look great.
Thank you Liam, they took a bit longer to make bit they fitted in the end. well i try to keep the cost down, but sometimes it cannot be helped. i hate to think what i have spent already. thanks again cheer's Tony
There is some very good information in your video. I look forward to the next.
Thank you Rob., i do best to try and make them as interesting as possible, any information gained is something learned. cheer's Tony
Awesome job Tony!!! Great video. Cheers Onno.
Cheer's Onno. very much appreciated. Tony
Tony, I came across this site last month. Since then I have been hooked! I have binged watched all 195 episodes so a now caught up. Can I say that it was great seeing you transform your empty loft into this 00 scale version of the north east. I have enjoyed every episode. I have just got back into the hobby but have no proper space to do a layout. The best I can do will be to improve my loft flooring and put in track so that I can at least run trains! There is no room to stand up properly in my loft! I'm so jealous of your spacious loft! ;-). Can't wait for the next episode. Cheers, George.
Hi George. Thank you for staying tuned to the north eastern, must have taking just as long to watch all those videos as it did for me to build the layout. lol. do you have a garden by any chance. this may be a bit expensive you could always build a man cave/large shed. if the loft as you say is cramped. all the best Tony.
Beautiful work Tony, those platforms look superb and as for the track work , it’s just lovely. Really enjoying this new extension series. Paul
Thank you Paul, The best bit is i will be able to run trains this week as my controller has come back from repair. so it all good. thanks again for your kind words...Tony
Very good update Tony, I like the wagon and pencil idea, for marking out the distance for the platform edge. It's going to be a nice station when you have it all finished.
Cheers
Geoff
Thank You Geoff, looking good, i would like to think so to, but we still have a long way to go. cheer's buddy Tony
Great update video Tony, the platforms are coming on good. Your measuring, marking up and cutting is very accurate.
Michael
Cheer's Michael. i do might best with the measuring, what that they say. measure twice and cut once, thanks for commenting Tony
A nice and methodical method with great early results, look forward to seeing this develop Stephen
Thank you Steven, it wont be long before the trains start arriving. all the best Tony
Great video Tony, the platforms are really coming on. Your measuring, marking up and cutting is very accurate.
Michael
Thank you Michael, you have to be accurate when it comes to curves on a platform. it was a shame after the cutting of the board, platform 2 did not match up as good. but a little trim and it was fine. thanks again for commenting all the best Tony
Great work Tony, another pleasant watch
Cheer's all the best, Tony
Thoroughly enjoyable Tony, thank you.
Thank You Nigel. Thank you for watching all the best Tony
Very nice, Tony. I am not brave enough to make MDF platforms, I am sticking with Metcalfe on. As the layout is going to be built in Thailand I am worried about Humidity there and I would rather Metcalfe ones bowing then MDF one. Martin. (Heading back to Thailand.)
Hi Martin, MDF, is as you say not very good when it comes to damp conditions that is why i seal the ends with PVA wood glue. have a safe trip home. all the best Tony
The platforms look the part Tony, looking forward to your progress!
Cheer's Paul. just add a spot of paint. then i can move onto the ballasting. cheer's Tony
Nice one Tony - I've got the joy of platform making coming up later this year on my new build.
Good Luke Peter with your project there are some many ways to build platforms, i am sure that you will pick the right one for you. all the best Tony
Great work Tony, really like that a lot. Following you’re progress..regards, Chris
Thank you Chris, if you are using mdf on your layout would that be 12mm thick. thank you for your following. all the best Tony
Coming on a treat Tony..........John.
Cheer's John, just painting them up now. all the best Tony
hi Tony
this is well made video mate ive watched it a few times now
very educational video well is in my opinion
when that area finished i can see it being a very photogenic with your great collection you have mate
keep safe arp
Hi Adi mate, Thank you for commenting. as yes i have added a set emu's to my collection. which you will see in the next video. take care all the best Tony
Great job Tony, thats a good way to kick March off, cheers...Mal
Cheer's My Pal Mal. march has really started well, i now have controller back after repairs and trains may appear for the first time at south shields. take care Tony
Excellent work on the platforms looking really good
Thank you Tony. look even better once painted. i can not rush a good thing. all the best Tony
Another great vid Tony, the platforms look fantastic ! Been doing pretty much the same last week with the mdf platforms and using a similar technique. Also, (after watching one of your vids) I did some of the cork "flooring strip" dry stone walls, just experimenting with the paint & colours still.
All the best & looking forward to the platform painting :)
Regards, Andy
Cheer's Andy. nice to hear you are having a go at the stone walling. Yellow first to get right into the cracks leave to dry then lightly brush a grey this is the colour i have trouble with the add green and blacks on the top edges. to finish brush off for effect. Nice one cheer's Tony
great work tony.
i use timber too. but 3 x 1, which i use metcalfe sheets and there individual paving slabs for the edge.
but looking forward to seeing your way
yours
paul
Thank you Paul, Metcalfe slabs would increase the height of the platforms. that,s why i have used paper as its wafer thin. i just hope it works when i come to paint them. Thanks again cheer's Tony
Great job on the platforms! I don't miss having to build curved platforms any more ;) That said, I wish I'd used wood like you did rather than card, but overall I think mine worked okay in the end. All the best. Iain
Hi Liam. you have capture newcatle central spot on my friend. i only wish i could have turned back the clock and built curves into newhassle. thanks for commenting all the best Tony
A joy to watch Tony, you have made a great job of those platforms and, once again, I have picked up a few good tips like strengthening the edge of the paper with the sellotape before cutting to give a crisp edge and your use of card strips for the edging and the paper for york paving. Kingsbridge Junction is just about ready for platform build and will require 2 x 7 foot platforms gently curved like yours so tisi has been extremely helpful mate. I am still undecided whether to use 18mm MDF or go the 15mm wood and 3mm plywood way, could I ask did you cut the MDF with a jigsaw and, if so, did you have any problems with keeping a straight edge as you cut? Also did you use a router to cut out the hole for the SB rods? Cheers Steve
Hi Steve, i used a jig saw for cutting the MDF. just needed a steady hand and a good eye. then sanded to the lines. router would need a guide to stop it from moving of. seeing the line was the hardest bit. but there was plenty of wind about on the friday. Don't forget to wear a mask when cutting. all the best Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Thanks Tony
Thanks for this one, Tony, I've got a couple of long, curved platforms to build this year but am still dubious about using MDF.
instead of MDF you could used 15mm strips of wood cut grooves into the wood to form the curve. and the shanfer the ends for the slope. then top it off with 3mm plywood, all the best Tony.
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Sounds like a good idea, I'll think about that one!
Nice one Tony .. good one for a tutorial
Thank You Dave, i liked to think i have passed some knowledge on. cheer's buddy Tony
❤❤❤❤
Cheer's. Tony.
Thank you ,Tony love all these, wonderful.
Hi Tony. Currently following your method to create platform templates for my layout. I'm encountering a problem though. When I mark out the platform edge using a pencil on the side of a wagon as you do, then run a carriage doing the same thing, the carriage does not clear the platform edge on the corners. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? Cheers, John.
Hi John, if the wagon is slightly narrow than the coach that might be the issue you have, so maybe use the coach but put the pencil in the center of the coach with apiece of tape, don't forget if you are going to put the edge on, allow a extra 2mm away from the track for clearance. curve platforms are tricky. but once the platforms are cut. temporary place in place, and run a coach along making sure its missing all points on the platform, mark the baseboard and then move the platform back from your mark before putting they edge on..hope this helps. lets us know how you get on......all the best Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN thanks for getting back to me Tony. I've remade the platform templates and I'll mark the edge using the coach instead. Need to wait until lockdown is over until I can get the MDF. Was planning to put a slight lip on the edge so I'll factor that in too. Try to make it look somewhere as good as hour's. 👍
as long as you are 100% happy with the template before you cut...sloping edge platform would great, i am sure you will do a great job of the platforms. dont forget to sand the edges and treat them with pure pva. unless you are going to use metcalfe card for the sides...all the best Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN yeah I was going to get some brick card for the sides and want to texture the top like the red chuckies you see on the West Highland Line so was either going to stick down red sandpaper or colour some sawdust / cork dust. Would it be an idea to prime the MDF first to seal it? Got loads of primer but nothing to do with it so might as well use it up.
Well that is a fantastic tutorial, your modelling and inventiveness is excellent. Is your choice of 18mm MDF based on code 100 or code 75?
Hi. thanks again for commenting. the height of 18mm is just below the doors.i use code 75. i guess it would work for code 100 as well. cut a piece of card 18mm wide and stand it on end, try it. all the best Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Thanks for that Tony. I've already opted for code 75 and Bullhead in the visible sections, although the points are both limited in selection and very pricey. I'll only be having a small, straight halt and so I'll use Peco edging for that and fill in the gap. It's always good to see what other folks are doing though and I'll forever be watching your channel and others - there is so much to learn!

Hi Steve. the jig saw is my favourite tool to used when cutting MDF. less dust created....sorry for the late reply....cheer's Tony
