As one who is finally getting around to learning to square the club face via torso turn rather than via the hands, I'm wondering if the same "timing" issues will still be there, or does this technique either cause all the stars to magically line up or does it lead to fewer variables? It seems that the parts at the ends of the arms must still be involved or it would cause this to be a much less "athletic" move - or is that just the bias of the uninitiated??

Great stuff Chris, been thinking for a long time that this is a major reason why I struggle to get proper impact and my compensation is to slide horizontally to get my hands forward. I do over swing going back. Thanks for this drill but I have a feeling I'm going to need something that physically obstructs my left arm from pinning to my chest in the backswing.

Good analysis. I think staying connected with more passive arms at the first quarter of the downswing would help them, along with starting the downswing with the hips.the arms should just drop at the beginning instead of swing out.

Question relating to downswing. I'm completely confused on what is the correct 1st movement. I don't know if by getting the hips moving 1st or dropping the arms 1st is what I should be doing. I'm getting too steep and it's causing me to early extend. If you can offer some advice it would be a great help please

We are not pros and do not have the flexibility. How about just taking a little shorter backswing.

Hey Chuck, I appreciate that many golfers are less flexible but in this video I advocate doing exactly what you say, shortening the backswing. My advice was to swing the arms less, use the wrists less, bend the trail arm less, pull the trail arm behind you less, these are all things that less flexible people can do

Why do golf instructors demonstrate all the errors golfers make with their swing. I taught badminton for fifteen years and never once said 'this is not how to do something' Show the right way and build positivity not negativity.

Context Barry, I only demonstrate the poorer moves so that I can explain why these can be problematic. If you are using free content on CZcams or any other platform it is vital that the golfer realised that they can not simply ‘follow instruction’ as they could do with an in person lesson. You need to have a deeper understanding of the swing, the traits and flaws and how all of these relate to the golf swing because you must be in a position to be able to select which pieces of information are for you and which are not applicable. A video saying ‘do this’ does not create a scenario where the golfer can accurately decipher if this is for them or not. My videos are not ‘do this’ videos they are created so that the viewer can learn about the swing in a little more details and understand it on a deeper level so that they are left in better position than when they arrived. I believe this is important and allows them to then now better decision and ultimately ‘own’ their own swing and swing changes. If you are looking for videos to simply tell you what to do then I’m sure there are plenty out there and it’s probably just a case of finding those channels. In person coaching is quite different from online coaching, but as someone who has coached for 15 years I’m sure you are aware of the differences and the messages than need to be conveyed in each of these scenarios.

Trying to imagine how one could live by this philosophy and still incorporate video into the instruction. Doing video on my own - and *boy* can it be a negative experience 🙂 - but without knowing what the "wrong" stuff is, I'd have no hope for transitioning towards the "right" stuff. The video is right stern about *constantly* reminding me that "feel ain't real". Progress is slow enough *with* such feedback. Can't imagine there'd be *any* progress without seeing the "wrong". Yeah, it hurts my feelings, but continuing to make poor contact hurts a lot worse.

@@MrBarrynicholas And I can see how, with enough reps, an apprentice who sticks with it will improve and likely become expert. I've not seen that with tennis and golf. I improved my tennis game over the years - largely via video - enough to play old man tournaments at the national level. Most golfers and tennis players remain mired at the "shooting 100" and 3.5 level. These sports compare in no way to the hammering of a nail, at least to my way of thinking, in their complexity. And, at least as far as tennis instruction goes, teaching pros are typically excellent players with little idea of what they'd see if they were to ever look at a slow motion video, *and* often claim the opposite of what actually occurs. Also, how many students of these games actually show any significant improvement due to their "lesson taking"? BTW, I video'd my recent golf lesson - heartily endorsed by my (well researched) teaching pro. Had no idea that I was standing up/early releasing prior to having it pointed out via video by an online instructor. Trying to imagine how one might go about fixing that via nothing but "positives".
