This was my first RC back in the 80’s when I was a kid. I thought it was great at the time. A few years later I got an Avante 2001 which I thought looked wicked. So much so I hardly used it, so as not to damage it. I still have it boxed in my garage some 30 ish years later.

A Hornet was my 1st car back in 85. 3 or 4 of my mates had them, and we loved them. We ran them on tarmac cul de sacs and waste ground. The tyres got toasted in no time and they rolled easily on tar...Years later I restored my original Hornet, with correct tyres etc and took it to a beach. What a revelation. The tyres and suspension work perfectly on compact sand. It truly is a beach buggy.

This is the RC car I had as a kid that got me wanting to get into RC again nowadays. I got a hornet for Christmas I think 85 maybe? I remember getting hop ups. Got a motor called "green diamond" and by the end of its day, it had went from the buggy, to a monster truck, with a Nissan body on it like the big 80's 4x4 my dad had. It had at one time foams and a 63 Vette body on it, and a monte xarlo ss Nascar body painted like Dale Earnhardt's blue and yellow wrangler #3 car. God so many memories with this thing. My dad assembled it on Christmas Eve. I remember waking up to a big crash sound. Dad got it together and knocked over the tree lmao. I'd snuck down the hall to catch him "I'd figured out about Santa by then" putting the tree back up. He never knew I saw. Loo

As an entry level modern Tamiya, i recommend the dt03 racing fighter. I put a brushless motor in, changed a few things and honestly its the most fun car I have. Even more then 500 dollar + cars

One of the best things about the motor on axle pod design of Hopper/Hornet/Lunchbox etc is all the moving parts except for the wheels are hidden away, this means they are both low maintenance, and there are no nasty drive shafts and cups exposed which can hurt little fingers - for younger kids they are the best thing the parents could get them. Virtually no maintenance needed on the moving parts(once you replace the patented Tamiya Butter pinion gear) the Lunchbox is probably the best thing you can buy for a 6-10 year old......I still love driving the sucker, and I'm 44 years old this year, have raced 1/8 nitro, 1/10 electric, and own a Losi DBXL-E 2.0 1/5 scale. Lunchbox Rocks!
