Damn, I wish you'd seen the opening three songs of the story in order. This one comes between "Stylo" and "Rhinestone Eyes." They're the opening act of this album, showing how the group takes over Plastic Beach for their next project.
And as for why Noodle would fight back against a fleet of pirates instead of escaping, it's because she was the subject of a successful Japanese super soldier experiment, so violence is always the answer.
Rhinestone Eyes comes after. At least thematically.
Stylo is so fricken good
@@Jjoker74
Plus it has Bruce Willace and Caddalacs.
All i know is Every single video has a separate story and def needs to be watched in order
separate story that is all part of a whole describing the band
I always took "melancholy hill" as settling for something because it's better than nothing. The singer wants to be with someone who they know doesn't want to be with them. "If you can't get what you want, then come with me". So even though the singer is sad to currently be alone, they also know that even if they are with the other, it's still not necessarily a happy result.
Also, I really like every song from Plastic Beach, but Empire Ants is always a recomend. It's just gorgeous.
Yes, Empire Ants is truly a masterpiece!
Gorillaz started putting connectivity between their videos for a while. In this case they had created a robotic Noodle that was being controlled by Murdoc. The video opened on the real Noodle who was vacationing on her own. Thus the two Noodle they bounced back and forth between. Ok so several songs back Murdoc had burned down their house because he needed insurance money. This set the band adrift. 2d was more or less caught in the pull of Murdoc, Noodles went off to find herself, Murdoc had a robot Noodles made, and Russel found himself adrift experiencing .... size issues. Somewhere along the way Murdoc found out about the location of Plastic Island and decided it would be ideal for a new base. Thus this video is about them approaching the island. Gorillaz, chill but complex.
wow i had no idea,
Noodle disappeared way back when the windmill island crashed to the ground.
At least according to the lore.
Murdoc found some of her DNA of the scene, and did the only thing anyone would do…
Build a cyborg noodle so that the band could keep performing while the real Noodle was out finding herself.
@@andreassmed2255 I almost commented on this when he covered Feel Good Inc and the helicopters showed up foreshadowing the attack on the Windmill Island in the following video. But I didn't think he had soaked in the essence of Gorillaz yet. Even now I mean to go into what took place between Feel Good Inc and Plastic Island would be a bit weighty.
The plastic beach videos need to be watched in a specific order to get the story. Stylo shows the band escaping from their problems, melancholy Hill shows them going to plastic beach, and rhinestone eyes shows them being attacked and having to flee the island.
Yeah, watching Gorillaz videos is almost like listening to Pink Floyd songs. Sure, you can just pick ones here and there, but Floyd took a lot of time and effort to make the songs flow into one-another into a cohesive sound for the entire album. For Gorillaz, it was creating this overarching narrative about the band that played out in their videos... with the occasional Murdoc deflecting projectiles with his armored crotch...
"Fire Coming Out of the Monkey’s Head" is an interesting song, BTW. Half of it is a man narrating an interesting story.
THE man Dennis Hopper
I love that tune.
Tune
I totally forgot that song existed. Need to listen to it again.
Love it
My favorite song from them been in my daily playlist for 7 years, there was an interview with them a few years ago where they explained the song and video were about batling depression and intrusive thoughts
This song is a whole ass vibe, one of the best
"Where's the Tank?"
19-2000 is required reading for Gorillaz, gotta check it out. It is there beside Clint Eastwood as the songs that made Gorillaz take off.
A lot of Gorillaz music doesn't sound the same. They take various genres and blend them together to create their own sound.
Check out Ascension, Stylo, Kids With Guns, Andromeda, Saturnz Barz, Demon Days and 19-2000 from them when you get a chance.
I second this list, great choice of Gorillaz songs.
Kids with Guns for sure… and White Light
I'd strongly advocate to add 'Let me Out' to the list.
Stylo 100%
Might be my favorite Gorillaz song, if not at least top 5. I interpret it as telling a story about someone with an unrequited love, knowing they'll never be able to get with them, they settle for someone who is there for them. On one hand, it's melancholic, it'll never be what they wish it were, with both loving each other equally, but on the other hand, it's beautiful and sweet that the singer is willing to accept this because they just want to make them as happy as they can and just having them close makes life easier for them. Complicated and beautiful, I love it.
Love this song. Love how the music is simultaneously happy and sad, or melancholy. And yes, it is a love song.
React to El Mañana, different vibe and absolutely a must!
Watching Melancholy Hill before El Mañana seems wrong somehow.
If you watch Rhinestone Eyes, Gorillaz couldn't finish making the animation for it so they made the storyboard animation. Someone spent 6 years making the animated music video in their spare time and it was recognized by the band CZcams account as great work. So please watch the fully animated video of Rhinestone eyes.
Though it never got fully animated I would recommend Rhinestone eyes
Someone did end up animating it. Go look it up!
@@j.w.thecartoonmusicguy1911 and Gorillaz gave there Seal of Approval.
@@j.w.thecartoonmusicguy1911 oh shit for real?? I'm gonna search it, thanks for telling me
Each Gorillaz album is thematic and narrative throughout. Watching the videos out of order is like watching 3-5 minute clips from a 2 hour film randomly. The submarines were all heading to the “Plastic Beach” (the album title that features this song). The girl with the bullet would is a robot duplicate of the girl with the Tommy gun. (Who is also the same girl dancing around in the DARE video). It can be a little hard to follow everything out of order 😅
The acoustic version of this song is also amazing.
Really the albums have story lines, and the videos reflect that not the songs. Superfast Jellyfish or Stylo from this album are really fun
Superfast Jellyfish is reeealy fun!
Superfast jellyfish is a bop with a daaaaark subject matter about the pollution of the seas and our bodies.
One of my favorite Gorillaz songs, which naturally puts it in the running for one of my favorite songs ever. It’s so melodic, the beats are so poppy, it’s just a really fucking fun song.
One of my personal favorites. Love this song so much. Keep up the Gorillaz reactions my dude!
Amazing, amazing band - Love that you're delving into them so deep!
Try El Manana, or Saturnz Barz, Kids with guns is also a shout as well. Not many bad songs in their catalogue!
Andromeda and Aries are also very well made imo
Not any 'bad' songs imo. Just some better than others. Depending on my mood they have a song for me
I have always took this song to be an unrequited love song but more of a hopeful one than a sad one
The animated people in the subs, are collaborators, Snoop, The clash, De la Soul, a few others, the videos are a comic style story, they go in a chronological order . El manana is stunning, so happy to see someone dive into them.
One of my favorite songs of Gorillaz
"Empire Ants", "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead", "Andromeda", "Spitting out the Demons" are some great ones.
Would love a react to any of one of those or all of them lol
The song "plastic beach", from this same album is.. SO. GOOD.
The people in the other submarines are collaborators on the album; Plastic Beach
And the girl with the bullet in her head is a cyborg version of the girl in the beginning who defended the ship: Noodle
I'm a musician and I'll cover this song for my friends and family when they feel sad :) always cheers them up
It’s such a sad song to me lmfao.
@@BlueRupees same man. My dad used to play this to me when i was younger and it just breaks me whenever I hear it.
some of their songs/videos arent commentarys but further the plot they set up with their characters, thats what this one is more than about society
Gorillaz has so much going on. Hoping Fire Coming out of the Monkey's Head and Stylo end up on your channel.
I Love Stylo so much
In a previous music video, which is usually pulled from CZcams for unknown reasons ("El Manana"), Noodle is chilling on a floating island that gets shot up and crashes by mercenaries.
Noodle hears "pirates" and she grabs her Tommy gun. Not again. Not without a fight.
Man haven't seen many reactors go right into melancholy hill this early, what a chad.
All of the other submarines are piloted by the artists that collaborated on the album that this song is form, Plastic Beach. Snoop, De La Soul, Lou Reed, etc...
"Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" and "All Alone" are two more to check out.
It is a Thompson that came with a drum or a .45 cal stick magazine. A friends Father carried and used one in WW2 in the invasion of Italy all the way to Germany. They used stick mags in WW2.
You really need to check out “November has come” and “All Alone” they are such a vibe
If he’s never listened to DOOM before it will be interesting seeing him react to his verses on “November has Come”
@@ransome5610 I always see people react to their radio hits but there is so much more to the band in their songs.
“November has come” is one of my all time favourite songs
19-2000 is just amazing.
“The melancholy hill - it’s that feeling, that place, that you get in your soul sometimes, like someone’s let your tyres down. It’s nice to break up the album with something a little lighter. It’s good to have something that’s a genuine pop moment on every album. And this is one of those.” - band member Murdoc Niccals in an interview with NME
“On Melancholy Hill” is about the not so good side of consumerism. Like much of the album, it criticizes society, this time through the paradoxes of displaying an upbeat, pop-infused sound."
Love it! Been waiting for this one.
Also the folks in the submarines are, according to Wikipedia, are "...crewed by all of the collaborators that helped make the album, including Lou Reed, De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, 2manyDJs, and Gruff Rhys."
Dope yeah man this is one of my faves the way he says oh um I oh dear is the best
Man im loving these gorillaz reactions. My favorite three tracks of theirs are "Sound check (gravity)", "Fire coming out of the monkey's head" and "doncamatic". If you check either of those three out, i'll be a very happy man!
If you want the direct sequel to this video it's called Doncamatic.
Yep, the Thompson submachine gun aka "Tommy Gun" or "Chicago Typewriter" was in either 9mm or .45 caliber. And as Noodle is showcasing the standard stick magazine is the far more reliable magazine for it as opposed to the drum magazine that you see get used so much in mobster movies, due to the fact the drum mag jams somewhat frequently.
The various submarines are piloted by the various collaborators who worked on the Plastic Beach album with Gorillaz, and the destination at the end is the titular Plastic Beach itself. Also you should check out the song "Do Ya Thang" by Gorillaz featuring Andre 3000, it's a pretty catchy song and an interesting video.
first vid i've watched on this channel, and i gotta say, i love your voice
Enjoyed getting ur reaction to this wonderful song. I believe the song does in fact have a double meaning it is about love and how the power of love can guide us through life’s darkest moments. Its also about the gorillaz history and lore. The band had been through a lot of turmoil and had disbanded. This eventually led murdouck to find/constuct the plastic beach. This video shows murdock and 2D going on a high stakes mission to get noodles back into the band and reclaim the lost platonic love that exists between bandmates and friends who share a common goal
You finally reacted to it!
As Always,, I Really Enjoyed Your Reaction My Music Lovin Brother.
Yes! I love this song!!
IMO the Gorillaz sometimes include messages in the video, sometimes in the lyrics, and sometimes forgo the message choosing instead to communicate through feeling and sensation. They always however deliver an instant classic that pushes the boundaries of sound and music. Industry leaders. Always ahead of their time. Love em.
Daman Alburn lead singer, as you may or may not know, was lead singer and writer of the band, Blur. There is no limit to the guys' talents, especially as he is not a young pup.
you channel is amazing, i love seeing your reations. my only critique is you should have the lyrics up for us as well. keep up the great work!
Checkout "19-2000", and "November Has Come".
I’ve loved this song for years and it just hit me that the little “bop beep” melody reminds me a lot of the theme from Elf… The big epic hook part, not the part that sounds like a shopping mall
Love checking you going through the style shifts that Gorillaz has gone through over the years
This is the song I've been waiting for
I mentioned in the DARE video that some Gorillaz videos are in universe shoots while others are "real". Most of Plastic Beach consists of "real" videos, following the tragedy that occurred in the video for El Manana from Demon Days
So glad you liked it
this is my favorite song by them, it always makes me long for a specific girl out there.
Fun fact every body in the submarine’s where featured on the album
just for peace of mind: yeah, Tommy guns typically were chambered in .45 because it was the same round that the Colt 1911 pistol used, and a big part of portable rapid fire guns at the time was to make them the same caliber as pistols, meaning less types of ammo to create or transport, and the .30-06 round used in rifles at the time gave too much recoil to be usable in CQC (they had the BAR at this time which used the .30-06 round, but it was too big, heavy, and has too much recoil to be handled easily for close range fights, like in trenches)
This & Clint Eastwood are my favourite two Gorillaz songs, such an underrated band
There is a vidoe on youtube that explains this band lol. Very different then anything ive heard i love how different they sound with each song. The vidoes you need to watch in order trust me the have a huge story.
You should definitely check out British freestyle rapper 'Big Heath' he's finally back after a year out! Definitely not what you're expecting.
Love you're videos Mr L Boyd ❤️✌️
This song has to be on my list of top 100 most beautiful artworks of all time. The vibe is immaculate.
Definitely my favorite Gorillaz song
All Alone is amazing
Amarillo. revolving doors .Donkamatic . pirate jet. Dracula Are really amazing songs love this channel keep up the great work
All the people in the little submarines are people they've collaborated with. Snoop did the intro on Plastic Beach. Also, I recommend Superfast Jellyfish. It's an odd but really good song.
If you would like to see the genius who wrote this song :) - all of Gorillaz' songs - he's on Jimmy Kimmel tonight (Jan 19). Damon Albarn is a guest this evening
“All Alone” with British rapper Roots Manuva…. I have a feeling you’ll find it fascinating. 🤘🏼
My favourite Gorillaz song 👌🏼
Never heard this and wasnt gunna click but im pumped i did.... this song is sick🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Stylo, Rhinestone eyes, and el manana are some other great songs by these guys.
i cant wait till you get to there latest album
From this album I would recommend Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach (Snoop Dogg is in it) and Stylo.
Gorillaz- November has come
I'm gonna keep suggesting it until you do it
Another fave song of mine from is stylo
Tomorrow comes today, is a good one to listen to
Gorillaz all day every day!
if it wasn't for your style of approaching artists one song recommendation at a time, I would highly advise checking their Demon Dayz Festival 2017 live concert. Not only to see how well they translate to a live version, but how their different albums and styles mesh so well even presented outside the stories told within the videos.
This video is the continuation of the Stylo video
Their are also some fun one off animations that give great character to the members. Like “2D (vocals) &Murdock (bass) explain how they meet. Or the the fact they had an official CRIBS episode that is on CZcams and it’s hilarious
You should hear the acoustic version of this (live BBC Radio 1). It hits different.
Stylo, and Super fast Jellyfish
You've now moved onto the songs from their 2010 album Plastic Beach, which definitely has a different sound than their two previous albums. In my opinion Plastic Beach is the best Gorillaz album by far, it's a work of art. I would highly recommend checking out the whole album and letting us know your thoughts and favorite tracks.
If my memory serves, Noodle is an experimental weapon of mass destruction, also back song's animated background that tells you the group's journey and story so it won't make sense if you watch out of order lol
The golden days
This was mine and my ex's song. We're still friends and I still love this song. "...you are my medicine, when you're close to me..."
2D, the seemingly blanked eyed guy with blue hair is almost always around Murdoc- the green, gruff looking guy. Not always by choice either. The lore to Gorillaz is so long it's like reading a book. Especially in the Plastic Beach era.
I would reccomend listening to one of their saddest songs "Busted and Blue"
Fire coming out of the monkeys head is voiced by Dennis Hopper, it's a story over a beat it's awesome
One of my favorites from Gorillaz with a complete story is Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head. The live Demon Days performance that was televised was absolutely incredible and Demon Days itself was such a hard album to top but Plastic Beach came pretty close.
Sometimes a song is about nailing a sound, more than a message.
I love this song. I find it charming. Gorillaz are the best. Another short sentence.
Would love to see you react to "Tomarrow comes today" Gorillaz first animated song. the song really gives a early 2000s vibe in it's mood/melody and visuals
another classic
Stylo!!
gonna have to watch the official video now, looks like lots of easter eggs
Im so glad you have discovered gorillaz and enjoy their music 👍 you should deffinetely listen albums from start to finish, they have storylines.
Yes keep the gorillaz coming!!! Love this kick you are on and the Gabriel Iglesias, next I suggest more Bert krieser for the comedian and by the gorillaz superfast jellyfish or saturnz bars
yesss
Maybe I‘m biased because they were my childhood but this song is one of the best ever of this genaration. Pure art
