He’s calling the love _fake_ since Rhinestones are used to imitate diamonds in extremely low quality jewellery. Even mid quality imitations will use the slightly higher value Cubic Zirconium or Swarovski Crystals in place of diamonds.

as far as i know the entire album is about environmental issues and the “plastic beach” is their way of bringing that to light some. Great video! i recommend 19-2000 it’s an absolutely amazing song

Oh, Damon and Jamie are definitely English :). But the collaborators come from all over the world. Gorillaz is a global family. BTW this song is absolutely transcendent to experience live. When the crowd starts up on "That's electric-tric-tric" it is an unbelievable communal joy. (If you want more poetry, please listen to Empire Ants. It draws in the environmental aspects and the ways that music can heal)
I highly recommend listening to "Empire Ants" off this same album. It is definitely a song you'd consider beautiful.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that this music video never got made. It was supposed to be the last music video in the series (and chronilogically follows Stylo then plastic beach) but was scrapped last second. It's my understanding that they released the story board as the music video years later because fans were so interested in how the story ended.

Correct. It wasn't meant to be released as a story board, but they did because of budget issues. The fan animated one posted above is absolutely amazing, though, and entirely worth a watch.

I’m glad to see the song discussed, because it means a lot to me. Something about this song helped me through a writer’s block for a novel I was writing. But this song just hit perfectly to punch through it.
The video and the music is connected. It's cryptic because you don't know much about plastic beach. Plastic Beach is a place. Point Nemo in fact. Rhinestones are artificial, Robot Noodle is artificial. The whole video shows Murdoc and the Grim Reaper, Robot Noodle and in the end Real Noodle shows up. The chorus... It's Electric... Again the electric things in our lives are artificial, we love them, but that love isn't real... It's manufactured in factories far away.
That's actually not the grim reaper. He's the Boogieman and technically the rejected 5th horseman of the apocalypse, Flatulance.

Gorillaz songs just tap into a persons imagination. I remember in High School, my art / pottery teacher would have each student choose the songs for that week during class. One day I brought The Gorillaz Demon Days cd in. I shouldn't have been shocked when several students and even my teacher wanted to borrow (and copy) it. The band just has a uniqueness that you instantly know when you hear them.

i just gotta say i love watching you react to these, gorillaz has been a part of my life since day one and its so dope watching someone experience them from scratch, as if i'm re-falling in love with gorillaz.
19-2000 mate, it's an important one for Gorillaz. One of the songs that made Gorillaz hit the public ear alongside Clint Eastwood that you already reacted to. Remember both of those taking over MTV back when MTV was... *M*tv... alongside some of the other massive hits of the time, including some Linkin Park songs like Crawling and In the End (since you started the LP journey with Numb)
I like how you try to interpret cryptic songs in your own way, and often come to similar conclusions as I do, even if it's widely different than what the artist intended. Just reinforces how powerful music can be even if everyone takes something different from it. This is also my first time hearing this song even though I'm familiar with most of Gorillaz work, and not sure how I missed it. This is a good one.
Might help to know that a beach here in the UK was swamped with plastic toys after a shipwreck. Decades later, bits of Lego can be found on the shore of Cornwall.
There's also a lot of issues with factories up north.
Gorillaz is an amazingly gifted band idea. The artist drew Tank Girl, and has a distinctively British UK art style.

If you found this one beautifull, you should deffinetly check Andromeda, is the most chill and beautifull song of Gorillaz (in my opinion).
Ik this is form a year ago but you have great taste. Andromeda has got to be a song that I will listen to in my deathbed.
The reason for just the storyboard is because the band didn’t have enough money to fund the animation for an actual video. Essentially, they created a lot of things including an entire website with music videos, interactive games, and several things that brought in no money but were simply there for the fans, had little success with their previously released other music videos, one of which featured literal BRUCE WILLIS, and both of which required a large budget. The whole album wasn’t doing very well, and the record label pulled funding from the rhinestone eyes music video, hence the reason it is only a storyboard.
If you haven't heard it yet you should listen to 'The Lost Chord' by them, it's part of the story arc and probably one of my favourites.
One of my fav Gorillaz songs and that's saying a lot. They have great music.

The Plastic Beach had heavy themes about environmentalism and consumerism.
Their main singer / writer, Damon Albarn, is English. Also, this is one of my favorite Gorillaz songs and I've probably listened to it hundreds of times but have no idea what he's talking about. You've gone over some of the best of their catalog, if I were to make a recommend for what's next, I would say either "Tomorrow Comes Today" or "19-2000".

Throughout the song, I feel like whenever they interpret their lovers eyes to rhinestones it’s a triple meaning to me because he compares rhinestones and factories, which polluted air, but mass produce it as well as to rain so it always made me think rhinestones are pretty on the surface, but cheap as one meaning so their love doesn’t mean much, but also the love is toxic since the factories are polluting the world to make it, as well as a shimmering rain could be acid rain, and then that that type of love is common because the reason rhinestones are so cheap is because we can make so many of them well, that’s my take at least

You’ve got to see the Gorillaz in concert. They actually used holograms of the cartoon characters on stage, at least in the early days. Those shows were brilliant. Sadly, they don’t use the holograms as much for the more recent performances.

Said by an African fella to someone who was complaining about the rain “ rain is like diamonds falling from the sky” I took it to mean rain is precious ( we all need it Humans Animals Plants). But rhinestones falling from the sky will help no one.

My favourite off of 'Plastic Beach'.
EDIT: The fan video is great but I actually kinda like the different beat with the storyboarding to this. It leaves you hanging for the next image (if interested in the story) which hits in time with the music. Also I always took the love like rhinestone falling reference to mean both worthless and relatively unpleasant. I would prefer water than a rhinestone (even though they are light), and that they then add to the pollution whereas water dissipates.
Maby its like the inner workings? Like rhinestone is cheap diamond but far away it can look real and beautiful but as you get closer (learn more about it like unravel the truth),
the same as how factories can look amazing from a far but when you learn the innerworkings of them and how they effect the environment you see past their rhinestone effect and see how they aren't so great.
I'd love to hear a breakdown and analysis of this song.
Also, I don't know if it was just what I saw, but it SEEMED like people didn't like Plastic Beach much when it was first released. Some of my friends and other random comments I saw on the internet were like "Oh well at least I can put Demon Days on repeat" and I'm over here thinking "Plastic Beach is their best yet!" But it seems like people's opinions of Plastic Beach have improved over time or maybe I was just talking to the wrong people lol

The unifying “sameness” in Gorillaz is obviously Damon Albarn; the differences all come from the amazing revolving list of collaborators who fuel that. But you can certainly recognize his musical writing and sounds throughout all their albums and even his solo work… and of course Blur.

If you listen to the entirety of the album plastic beach, the message comes much clearer. It closely relates to concern about the state of the world, climate change and consumerism. It is definitely an album you should listen to all the way through.
