Why Is Wendigoon Being Cancelled? - Zábava
The worst part about people telling him it’s cultural appropriation to use the wendigo as his name and logo is that he is native. He’s recounted multiple times that the reason he uses the wendigo in his profile picture, and the reason it’s his favorite cryptid is because of the stories his grandfather would tell him, and it’s awful that these people can’t do even the most minute levels of research before calling out someone for using elements of their own culture.
I actually had no idea he was indigenous. I remember him telling the grandpa story/situation, but not that. It honestly makes sense if so.
From what I’ve learned too, the wendigo is not always an inherent taboo discussion in certain tribes.
I know with specific tribes (I think Apaches to be specific? but correct me if Im wrong) it IS taboo and you don’t even want to bring it up.
But with others, it is not an integral part of their mythology or history, and not disrespectful or “tonedeaf” to use it.
He is not sensationalizing the cryptid, commodifying it like a fair amount of media entities do; THAT is what is genuinely complained about by indigenous communities and the correlated indigenous people Ive personally talked to. Indigenous people are not a monolith, and I find it to be more common that non-indigenous people bring shit like this up than actual indigenous people.

Wendigoon has stated before that just because he’s a Christian doesn’t mean he feels like he should evangelize or try to convert people, he simply uses it as a guide to be a good person
Even if he was trying to evangelize people, as long as he's being respectful, what would the issue be?
That and uses his religion to make banger videos. Him talking about Paradise Lost and Paradise Found along with him talking about Biblical Angels is just so interesting.
Though that is a bit weird as Jesus himself commanded evangelism when he gave the Great Commission.

Wendigoon has mentioned multiple times that his grandfather is a Native American descendant from one of the Appalachian tribes and would tell him stories of forest monsters like the Wendigo which is where he derived his name from.
those people really hate him for his religion, they just like to pretend that all Christians are racists (even though around half, maybe more of Christians are non-white) so they have an excuse to hate all christian while pretending that hating people based off religion isnt any different then hating people based off their race or sexuality.

I looked at a lot of the profiles who said a lot of the out of pocket and biased things, and a lot of them were teens or young adults under 24.
Par for the course imo. I remember being somewhat ignorant and reactionary when I was in my late teens and I heavily regret it. Because while the general sentiments could be technically true about certain religious groups, they are refusing to see the bigger picture and some profiles I saw had extremely privileged attitudes. Must be nice uo on that high horse of theirs.

If I recall correctly, the Bible, or at least the new testament, instructs followers to learn about other cultures and stuff, doesn't it? Other religions. Wait yeah now I remember! The Bible says to be knowledgeable so that you can defend the God when someone challenges you on your beliefs. So, naturally, I think the Bible kinda argues that it's important to understand people even if you don't share the same religion.

I see people saying being a Christian is a red flag. If you were to say that about another religion or do something like that to another deity, you'd get major backlash. I'll add onto this I think wendigoon is making the right call by staying away from most discussion involving religion or politics. You can't say much in support of either side without ending up in controversy (as made obvious by the people mad at him) so staying out of it is definitely the right move if you aren't making content explicitly about those topics.

Yeah she even outright self describes herself as being a "left wing populist" which pretty much immediately disqualifies her from being a moderate or non-biased. Populists almost universally adopt extreme positions to pander, in the left wing case it's "eat the rich", "we should steal everything the top 10% own and give it to the bottom 10%", or "we need to kill anyone who aligns against us like anyone right wing". Real moderate left wing people will believe in taxing the rich more but populist left wing people believe in killing them or stealing everything they own. It's been very fascinating to look at the situation for a psychologist's perspective, but it's gotten to a point where I can't help but feel upset about it. This often leads to a blind hatred of religion overall, despite these people (and the VAST majority of Americans overall) having an incredibly limited understanding of religion.
Seriously, when you're so ignorant to the subject that you can't even name a non-Abrahamic religion, you have no authority, not even REMOTELY, to make any claim about it. There is a whole philosophical can of worms here. The concepts and standards for what constitutes good or evil is now entirely relative based upon the goals and desires of the society that adheres to them. When secularism becomes the new religion, usually personal pride takes the reign as to what is "good" and now anything "good" is whatever lets you do whatever you want without consequence. Pride over humility, selfishness over selflessness. You can see this behavior everywhere on social media.
Christianity rejects this approach and people misconstrue concern for "hate". Our society values radical individualism and selfishness rather than wisdom and self awareness. I would much rather have Christians being active in trying to help others "repent" and be the best we can be than secular apathic atheists telling people "do what you want because nothing matters".
We reap what we sow. People are gonna have to acknowledge sooner or later the true Christians at least had a better understanding of how society and morals operate.
I am a staunch atheist. I grew up going to church at least twice a week, church camp, my mom was a preschool teacher at the church etc. so I do not particular like religion at all. Wendigoon seems like such a sweet, wholesome, loving guy and honestly when I started watching him it made me less extreme on how I saw Christians. I am a huge horror fan, so I have seen everything he has posted. Quality content. And he has every right to discuss his religious beliefs. And he does not even talk about it in depth, unless it is relevant. He mostly says it in passing. These people are batshit crazy.
I don't know if I'd consider myself an atheist, but I'm not religious by any means either. I just don't really care about religion that much to be honest. I was never interested in any of that. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to automatically judge someone based on what they believe in or don't believe in. If you're a good person, then you're a good person, regardless of which book you believe to be true. But yea, you're right. The man makes some great content and he seems like a chill dude. I can care less what his religion is. I swear, the internet will always find a way to try to bring someone down, no matter how ridiculous it may be.

This is how I feel. I was made to go to church and I've had some big issues with religious people and so much happens in the world that is caused by people using religion as a weapon my opinion of religion isn't that good. I'm not religious, not that that's super relevant. To me, Wendigoon's faith adds a unique perspective to his videos. He covers so many occult/dark topics and his beliefs are another lens through which he interprets the information he presents to his audience. I love his channel and I'm glad he's secure in himself.

I'm atheist myself, and I have to say these types of atheists are the ones who make me sick to my stomach. These atheists will be the first to say there's no war on Christianity while simultaneously giving Christians ammunition to claim otherwise. Wendigoon is more of a content creator who is Christian rather than a Christian content creator. I've very much enjoyed several of his videos and the couple of times I've seen him mention God have never bothered me. He seems like a real good dude, and if his faith is important to him, hey, as long as he isn't using it for any nefarious purposes, I say good for him. I hope he's doing well.

I never get the people who complain about cultural appropriation. They only really ever complain when they see a white person doing it to a non-white culture and rarely apply that reasoning to anyone else. Extra stupid since despite claiming to oppose racism they lump all groups of the same race together and have no problems with things like an African American (who are mainly west African descent) appropriating things like Egyptian culture or East African cultures, or with things like a Japanese person adopting Chinese culture (which happens a ton in places like restaurants where you'll have Chinese people opening up Thai restaurants full of Thai cultural icons and decorations). They do the same with Native Americans and lump Mayans, Aztecs (themselves comprised of multiple cultural and ethnic groups), Comanches, and Apaches all together even though some of those groups have _nothing_ in common with one another except occupying the same connected pair of continents, which is like lumping Chinese and Irish people together.
There's also some rather racist gate keeping and racist hypocrisy involved to since they often judge based off appearance and/or ethnic make up. Someone who may be 1/8 black but looks pretty white will be treated like they're white but someone who's 1/8 black with darker skin, a flatter nose, and curlier hair will be treated as black and the same is true if they're 1/16 or 1/32 black too so long as they _look_ black enough even if they do things like maintain stereotypical black hair styles, fashion, and interests. This can be really dumb since plenty of non European groups can still look really white: many Iranians, Afghans, and Turkish people's as far east as _China_ can look pretty pale, have lighter colored eyes, and have red, blond, or light brown hair and some Natives can be really pale and have rounder eyes so even a little bit of white DNA can make them look 100% white. I live near several reservations and know people who are almost entirely Native but could easily pass as Italian, Spanish, or Greek.

As a pagan I admire Wendigoon and his content, I never was offended that he was a Christian because there never was anything to be offended about. when he does bring it up it’s from his personal experience (which is very few) and talks in a way that isn’t converting you or being judgmental. He’s having discussions that is pretty interesting for an average viewer and you don’t have to be a Christian to like it. Having a faith and religion in one’s content isn’t an uncommon thing and something he’s passionate about. Besides there is one video where he says that he doesn’t care if someone is gay, so bigoted is a far-stretch without any evidence of him being a bigot.

As a Christian myself it’s incredibly refreshing to see someone like him gain so much popularity because he is a good representation of what real Christianity looks like. Often, we see people exploit Christianity or do horrendous things in the name of it and those individuals get the spotlight and give society a very false look into what Christianity is about. In short, I think Christians get a bad reputation because of the negative representation of it that you see in media so to see someone like wendigoon that’s so positive come up in popularity it makes me happy to see. Also, he’s not forceful with it but he’s mentioned it before because that’s literally part of who he is. I know for myself, at places like work I never bring up that I’m a Christian I only might in passing if it’s relevant and most of us are that way we’re not trying to make others believe what we believe.

I'm trans and I have NEVER gotten the impression that Wendigoon is some kind of bigot. What pisses me off with the people complaining about the man's faith are talking at a very literal level; it's deceptive because while it's not lying, it's far from truthful.
YES, he "hasn't gone one video" without talking about how he's a Christian, but like... Those were videos specifically about religious stories. Dante's Inferno and Paradise Lost//Found are pieces of literature with religious significance (as well as his video on the different castes of Angels), and he explains that while what he talks about is just cool lore to some (like myself) to himself it is material of genuine reverence. That's all it is... In fact, every time he does so, he ACTIVELY says he doesn't want it to come across as preaching and that if it does, he's sorry.
Actually I just remembered another time he mentioned his faith and it was in a Mista GG video where they tried scaring each other for charity, and all he did in the regard of allegedly "preaching" was explain how his beliefs ended up making him terrified of a video that would otherwise be just spooky. All it boiled down to was adding context. It wasn't preaching lmao
Hell, just to prove my own assumption right, I went onto his channel and made mental note of all the videos I had watched from him, and brought attention to all of the videos in that pool where he mentions his religion. The result was roughly 5/40.

The people making those complaints are fucking stupid (or rather more accurately just terminally online).

While I've had some troubling familial relations with people who are Christian, I've also had friendships with other followers of Christ that restored my hope as they follow what they preach (hell, I have a friend who flirts with me almost as regularly as he prays to Jesus, it's pretty funny), and Wendigoon's response only goes to show he is one of those such people.
He DOES love unconditionally.
He DOES forgive thy neighbor.
He DOES respect the boundaries of others.
And he DOESN'T use his faith as an excuse to push evil, hatred and vitriol into the world.
I doubt this is how you think, but I do just want mention it to anyone who bothers to read this, but this stuff isn't done by people "like me" as part of normalized behaviour, we hate it too, but I can't blame you all for thinking it is; negativity bias and tribalism are a bitch to deal with. This isn't an LGBTQ+ mentality, this is TWITTER mentality as the site rewards toxic behaviour and misinformation and that's never changed. It just sucks they had to try and cancel such a wholesome dude like Wendigoon.
"Cancellation" is a weapon that's intended for good, but like any weapon; it can be abused by those unworthy of using it.
Oh also, I've read some comments that he is a native and so his use of the Wendigo in branding is fine, and while I'd personally like a citation on that, I also kinda don't care. Native or Caucasian, Wendigos are fucking cool and he just really likes them and so do I.
And then there's the whole thing with Kyle, and I'm gonna be honest: I know dick-all about that situation, so I have no place to talk about it, but hey; on Twitter, expressing that you can't talk about a situation because you're not properly informed is seen as an indicator of being dumb somehow, when in actuality it's admitting your limits and understanding that you don't know enough to actually say anything of substance.
(Also I will say there was one thing that was a fair point, but it has nothing to do with Wendigoon himself; it kinda felt like you did try to lampshade the claim of "pseudo-biblical laws"; people have tried to use the Bible as justification for doing terrible--another reason I have endless respect for Wendigoon; he doesn't fall for that--but it is a problem. It was used as justification to try and take away women's bodily autonomy last year, it's become a big talking point as to why "trans bad" despite the book never even mentioning them. These are real, and it feels a bit disingenuous to just act like that isn't a thing.)

as a Christian, i will be praying for your family and your sanity against these type of people. Also since i life in the middle east i experienced 0 hate for my religion cause of the Abrahamic groyp and how the govt in this country is to people of my religion.
As a proud Christian, this just makes me sad. We are so vindicated and demonised by people nowadays. This is the second time I see a Christian get cancelled simply for being a believer... let's hope they don't ruin Wendi's life, unlike another unfortunate animator.... :(

Im a queer (panromantic demisexual if that matters) woman, im not religious, but my fiance is christian, and while i personally cant share in his beliefs, i respect and am happy that those beliefs bring him comfort, and he gives me the same level of respect for my spiritual beliefs
Honestly my view on religion as a whole is that its something that is meant to bring comfort and structure to those who feel the need for it but cannot find it within themselves, and im not gonna take that away from them, but i also wont lie that i view the stories in the bible to be on the same level as the stories in all the ancient mythologies
What i *cant* stand is when people use religion as a means to control others and how they live to meet *their* specific standards

As an atheist i love his content and his religion never bothers me. I think it reinforces his takes on the topics he speaks on and gives him an insight into references to biblical works. Never treat others differently because they believe in a different begining and ending than you, live in the now and remember everyone is entitled to an opinion.
