  • In this video we discuss how to change the battery in your Porsche 911 991. We also dispel some misinformation regarding Porsche batteries, so you can save quite a bit of money! Overall it's an easy job.
    Do I need to reprogram my battery? If you're getting an AGM with similar AH, I don't think you need to. If you're switching to a Li-Ion, you may want to consider it. I'll post below the item you need to do this.
    Are Li-Ion batteries worth it? Kind of! They last longer, require less Amp Hours, and are a quarter of the weight. However, they are about $500 more. You can get one on Amazon, but I'd caution that you may want to spring for the more reputable Anti-Gravity.
    Do I need a tender? No! Your settings may reset (mine and others didn't), but that's easy to fix. It can be helpful but is not necessary to use a tender.
    What's up w your mouse infestation? Apparently this is a common problem. We recommend you take your battery tray out (your dealer wont) and check yourself to make sure you don't have something eating your wires!
    Porsche batteries are rebranded, so why not save the 500+ the dealer is asking for and get a cheaper one, or better quality Li-Ion?!

    Anyone else notice the video is 9:11?! 🤣 Completley unplanned!

    Great video and appreciated it being fairly unedited. Screw drop was epic. Appears to me from the video you switched from a Group 48 (H6) size to a Group 49 (H8) size battery. It was obvious of a longer length battery being replaced. I'm planning to do the same for my 991.1 GTS. Just surprised that a dealer recoding of a new battery was not necessary after what a dealer told me. Good to know.

    Great timing with this video, I'm just about to swap my 991.1S battery today! I was going to make a video for my channel but you've already made such a good one. Dropping that screw was priceless!

    The Porsche engineers are nice people, making it so easy. Not so with my car, I was pissed the amount of crap I had to take off just to change the battery. Told the wife I wanted a Porsche for my birthday, she bought me one, only downside is it's 1:64 scale... (true story)

      Every year the model should get a little bigger (1:32, 1:16) until finally you hit 1:1!

    At 3:56 REMOVE THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL FIRST. Why? Well if your ratchet or wrench makes contact with ground, nothing will happen. If you did that to the positive terminal and accidentally made contact with ground with your ratchet or wrench, you'd end up being a welder if the negative terminal is still connected.

    Also if you want to power up the vehicle while the battery is out, make sure the power is pure DC at 12-14V (you might measure it with a DMM) and not half or full wave AC as some chargers could be. If anything, I use a DC supply.

    The very best battery is the AGM battery. It is what it came with and it lasts. And my original Banner AGM battery is going into its 9th year now. The H7 80 Ah in my car from Antigravity is $1200 vs $170 for the same AGM battery at Walmart.

    • @ComputerStuff

      yeah the Li batteries are super expensive :\. AGM is what we used in this video.

    You should reprogram the controller when you change the battery. The charging algorithm wants to know the Ah capacity, the chemistry, and how old the battery is. It’s less critical if you replace with an identical battery, but if you upgrade to an AGM, for example, they require a different charge profile. Ditto, if you install something considerably larger. The car may operate just fine, but I once upgraded a different marque to a very high quality AGM without reading the manual, and several MONTHS later, it threw a charging system error code, and wouldn’t charge. If I’d bothered to read the owners’ manual, I would have known. The dealer mechanic explained that many modern cars regulate charging with the engine controller, no longer having a separate voltage regulator. Apparently, interaction differences with different battery types can confuse the controller. A new OEM battery cured it; there was nothing wrong with the AGM unit; I have been using it for years in a less-finicky car. Porsche does offer the option of several chemistry types, but it needs you to tell it what you installed. Scanners that can talk to the ECU are relatively cheap, and you really ought to have one if you’re going to be playing under the hood much, anyway.

    thanks for the great video. Im a little confused reading some comments, in the video you replaced from H6 to H8 correct ? And reset coding is not necessary ?

    • @ComputerStuff
      @ComputerStuff  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Both correct. Bigger battery and no code necessary.

    Great video! Any reader tips or experience in hauling out and placing the new battery working alone? It's awkward and heavy to lift out the battery by yourself standing next to the car. On my Boxster, I climbed into the frunk to do it. Wondering if there's anything to worry about standing in the 991 frunk?

    • @ComputerStuff
      @ComputerStuff  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Great question. I dont see an issue standing in the frunk (I've done it before). Either that, or pump weights for a few days before the install and try again :P

    No eco battery relearn / initialization process done? Why does Porsche charge so much and claim you have to recode for a new battery so the charging system can change after knowing it's a 100% battery vs. the old one.

    Very odd…I discovered an exact same ‘rats nest’ in the exact same area under the battery in my 991. I wonder if there’s something about that area that attracts varmints 🤔
