One important thing to note about the 981, possibly other models as well, there is a secondary charger socket in the passenger foot well. That is the one you should be using not the one in the center console. If you haven’t started the car for a while, I think more than 10 days, the car will go into a sort of deep sleep mode and that center console is shut off. Meaning you may have your trickle charger plugged in but the car will not actually charge and your battery will eventually die anyway. Look for and use the one in the passenger foot well.
Thanks for pointing it out I really appreciate it
Awesome thank you but just curious to know why can’t you use the center console one?
@@e.r.6147ou can definitely use the center console one, have been doing it for years, if it was true that after so many days it was no longer “active”, your charger would start blinking on you. My dealer told me he charges all his showroom cars through the cigarette lighter.
Different fuse / amp rating and only one stays active with the key out. Front air inflator is also picky on outlets I think it’s reversed for that guy else you blow e fuse
Appreciate the review Tommy. Ordering the charger tomorrow. Been watching your reviews ever since I had my 2016 F80 M3 which I sold for my Gt Silver 997.1 turbo. You always come thru with the right video at the right time. Especially since the 911 only gets driven for the occasional weekend drive. Keep up the good content.
Thanks for the love !!
These garage videos look crispy. Must be your lighting setup. Good stuff!!
Oh yes my ceiling is filled with LED lamps ha ha
I got the same kit. I'm charging my car through cigarette lighter socket and it works flawlessly, very easy to use 👍🏻
Great to hear!
Great video tommy really enjoyed the video
Thanks!!
CTEK is the best and thanx for the tip with the adapter to 12V socket 😊👍🏻
You got it! 12v socket trick also works on bmw
For both, the BMW and Porsche, the 12v socket will be inactive after a while, thus not letting the Ctek charging/maintaining the battery. I also ended up hardwiring them and hiding the tail under the carpet/cover.
Great videos and absolutely love your garage!
Cheers.
Crap. Now I guess I have to hardwire it :)
@@TommyLGarage Or...you know...use the passenger footwell socket. ;-) That one stays active.
@@TommyLGarage Thanks for the great video. Just took position of a 997.1 and have ordered the Ctek.
Question: Why would one "hard wire" (I assume means using hard wire leads supplied with Ctek) to the battery rather than using the battery lead clips?
They do the same thing, correct? Keep up the good work!
Tommy - video was helpful. When you run the charger from the interior of the car, what do you do with the cable in regards to connecting to the electrical outlet? Do you leave the door open a crack or the window?
Grate video, thx for the tips, I got the charger today, question, is normal the charger get warm a little bit, like laptops charger? Cause I did plug in and 20 minutes later I wanna check and was warm!!! Thx
What do you find is the best way to run the power cord out of the car?
another great video bro
Thanks as alwayS
Great job explaining it
Thank you for visiting
Need a photo of beautiful Violet standing in the Cayman Frunk!!
Make sure you set the CTEK trickle charger mode to AGM (Snowflake). I think Porsche recommends using the cigarette lighter port. On BMWs there are +/- terminals under the hood, to avoid connecting to the battery directly. Porsche does have a remote + terminal, so you connect directly to the battery + terminal and use the remote - terminal.
I will look into it. Thanks !
Just been away for 3 months, back home and my 981s fired up just like the day I left it. Brilliant charger.
Happy to hear!
I have a 2015 Porsche 911 Carrera S. I will not be driving it for 4 1/2 months. 1). Do I need to plug the charger to the battery or to the cig lighter for it to continuously work. 2). Which charger do I need (Lithium or regular) from the links above? Ty!
Very helpful. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Cool I have had the ctek mx5 for several years didn’t know the cigarette adapter existed!
It’s a great alternative
My old A4's battery was almost dead. The hood latch was stuck and I couldn't pop the hood. The hood latch thing was an annual event in the winter even lubricated. Anyway, I charged the battery through the cigarette lighter port and got the car to start. After the engine bay was hot, the latch freed up.
Smart !!
I think the order is important while using the CTEK. Last thing you should do is plug it into the socket. It's written everywhere in the manual 😅
I don’t follow the rules hehe
its best to hard wire (if you can), the cig lighter will not see the same voltage as the battery terminal due to volts drop and paracytic load.
Good call!!
Thanks for the video Tommy! I am back in a P Car as of today! The addiction is real!
Oh nice!! What did you get ??
@@TommyLGarage I picked up a 991.1 GTS in Carmine Red.. So much better than the base I used to have. The sound is intoxicating!
I sometime have 991.1 regrets but this will hold me over till my gt4 :)
Great video. If you plug it into the socket in the cabin, are you able to close the door and lock the car?
Thank you. And yes you can easily.
I prefer to charge directly at the battery terminals using the supplied harness. That way I do not have the charger cables running by the door seals.
Good point
Tommy - thank you very much for the video. Two questions, please: 1. I have CTEK MSX 5.0 and a standard 2008 Porsche Boxster. Will the instructions in your video work on my model? 2. I'm going in for heart surgery in a week and cannot drive for a month. I was told to get the CTEK to make sure the battery doesn't die. How would you suggest using the CTEK for this time period? Many thanks again.
yes sir! it will work. And hardwiring it to the battery means it won't shut off.
Also - good luck on your surgery!
@@TommyLGarage Thank you for the reply and well wishes, Tommy.
Thank you.
You got it!
What would you recommend for just a maintainer for long term storage, i.e. a trickle charger just to maintain the battery from parasitic drainage for my Porsche Panamera
Trickle charger like this is the way to go
very helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback
Im shocked you fit in the frunk 😅 never seen a green top battery before 🤔
Thanks! I need to get this for my boxster GTS. have you tried noco genius smart battery chargers??
No I haven’t but I’ve always had great experience with ctek.
I use Noco genius 5 for my X5MC it works perfectly. It charges fast, heard ctek is slow though?
I have a Porsche Cayenne Diesel 2015 that I don not drive it too often so want to make sure the battery is maintained when i drive it. This is a silly question but when the car is on the display voltage shows a steady state around 14.7V. This is a 12V charger. Is that difference normal? I'm a novice, so sorry for the basic question. I have purchased the charger and the adapter but want to make sure I'm good (also it's an AGM battery).
A 12v agm battery is ment to be charged around 14v so 12v is nominal voltage and it shouldn't be lower than 12 volts for a period of time or it can cause permanent damage to the battery.
Safe to do this using the OBD2 port on the 996? My 996 is outside and not in a garage, so I don't want to leave my key in the ignition.
yes safe
Check the settings for your battery ! My Boxster 981 has a AGM battery - I think your Cayman would be the same ? Was the charger was set to the wrong battery type .
It should adjust automatically
Same question. I have a 2015 Cayenne Diesel with an AGM battery. I just purchased the 12V/4.3 CTEK + cig lighter adapter. Want to make sure I have it set correctly. Not sure if it's automatic since the MODE selection is there for a purpose I assume.
Brilliant! 👍
Thank!
I though these cars used an AGM battery. Wouldn’t your tender be in that mode?
Nice video but why not get a better faster and able to charge maintain and revive batteries AGM, Leeds acid or Lithium? E.g Noco genius 10?
Too expensive :)
@@TommyLGarage Ι got mine for 150 euros how much did you pay for two CTEKs?
Does your power point stay live when you turn off the car and lock the doors?
Yes it does
how it works is meaning toward 12v cigarette socket is always live even if your car is locked? isn't it?
Yes that’s the case
Isn’t there some requirement that the car to have been running within 15 minutes of connecting the trickle charger for long term storage?
Nope.
I have a 2008 Boxter which is not being charged for months and battery is dead. I got the charger and the cig. adapter following your link to Amazon. I connected the cig. Adapter and then the chrger to it, the green light indicating the connection is good, did not come up, I tried both the center and the passenger side bottom connectors, I even tries it on my Odyssey, the green light did not come on still. do you think the cig. adaptor could be faulty, or I am missing any steps?
Must be faulty as this should work
How long do you need to keep the battery charged I only drive the car once a week what do you suggest
I would just keep it plugged in all the time
Do I need to turn the ignition on while charging thru the cigarette lighter ?
Nope. Ignition off
I have several CTEK chargers that I use constantly on 3 60s classics and my "daily drivers" including a 986 Boxster and 718 Cayman S. The cigarette lighter is the way to go . Too simple. Never had an issue doing it. IMHO, CTEK is the best. After my first Battery Tender failed after less than a year.so I researched alternatives and found CTEK. And he is right about the Porsche brand premium. Ridiculous.
Ctek all the way!
Hey Tommy, thanks for the great videos. Question, is it ok to leave it charging for long periods e.g. a week, month or so?
Yes, absolutely. It shuts off after a month in the cigarette lighter, so it's better to hardwire it.
Can you close the doors on the wire? My car it outside but under a cover.
Yes you can
I have a 997 and a Ctek mxs5.0 I definitly going to buy the socket adapter now. Are you able to close the door and lock the car while you charging?
Yes I close the door without issues. Does not damage the seals
@@TommyLGarage thats perfect! thank you for the quick answer!😎🙏🏻
Is it safe to use "Recond" mode to charge battery using the cig adaptor?
Yes for sure
If user 12v adapter have to turn on key.. it dont work on my lexus start engine bottom
Gotcha
Hi. I have a M2competition 2020. U did mention lithium ion battery on your M3. How do I know what kinda battery I have on my M2. If my battery is lithium ion. Which Ctek shall I get ? Much appreciated
You would use the same charger as in my Porsche - first link in the description. You have a standard battery. Hope this helps!
Yes. Helped a lot
Would this work for my 2.5l cayman s 2017? Don't want to blow up my car!
Yes it would
Can this be used on 992 lithium battery with auto stop start function?
Yes just get a lithium charger. Works the same
does the the comfort cig plug you list also work for the m3/m4 version as well? thanks man
Yes! Just get the adapter
What’s model # for charger and adapter?
I think you’re in the video description. Check it out.
I got a 991 gt3rs and my charger disconnects through the cigarette lighter socket after I lock the car doors.
Before locking the doors the charger works.
Any opinions on this ??
Yes. Leave it unlocked :)
Keys have turn on . Im have problem with lexus gx start bottom not working if key not turn on
Can you use this charger for your M3 as well?
No. M3 uses Lithium Ion charger.
Does that red plastic tip need to be there? I had to take mine off in order to be able to plug in the adapter in my 911.
Does not have to be there.
What is the purpose of the red plastic cap, then?
*Red plastic tip (cap)
충전을 할 때, 차량의 전원을 내리지 않아도 괜찮습니까?
바로 +단자, -단자를 연결한 뒤에 충전해도 위험은 없습니까?
Ok to turn on
Show us how to do the hardwire method
it's easy
I can’t open my boxster’ hood, can I use it to jumpstart my car?
Yes, but you would have to tap it into the box located in your foot well. If you look at your manual, it will tell you how to do it.
But you can leave it plugged in and it will hopefully charge your battery enough so you can start it.
I just got one for my Cayenne with the cig adapter.
It will be great!
@@TommyLGarage Thanks again; the video was helpful.

1:49 I would like to have someone tell me why I need a Lithium battery charger when the alternator on my car always charged an AGM battery and can now charge a Lithium battery without any changes to it.
I never thought of that actually.
@@TommyLGarage I found out why. Some chargers/maintainers have a desulphate mode. That mode raises the voltage and spikes the battery. Anyway, in any case I am not spending 3 to 4 times the price of an AGM battery to get an AntiGravity battery. Not worth it and my batteries last over 10 years.
@@a.c.e.7568 lithium has a completley different charging curve, and can blow up if not charged correctly.
I smell a CTEK giveaway coming.
Haha don’t tempt me!
One small quibble....plug into car before plugging into wall.
Great point. Thanks!!
Part number of sigaret charger
It’s in the description of the video
Is this a lithium battery
No; regular
I thought the m3 had a sunroof and not the carbon fiber roof.
It has a sunroof
That’s a ridiculous place for a 12v socket !!
There are more !
