12 Years In Prison For 4 Rounds Of Ammo Accidently Left In Luggage

  • Ironically, this has happened to me before. I was leaving Vegas, and TSA found a couple bullets in my carry-on bag.
The agents took the bullets and told me to be on my way.
This happened in America, where the people have the Second Amendment, and firearm ownership is extremely normal here, so it was no big deal.
But we tend to forget how unique our 2A Freedom is in this country.
Let's not fool ourselves. They're trying to make an example out of these people. It's clear as day that this was an accident.
In the United States, bullets found in security usually lead to a fine.
However, in Turks and Caicos, legislators approved a measure instituting a minimum 12-year prison term for individuals apprehended for transporting firearms or ammunition to the islands.
Recently, the U.S. government issued a cautionary advisory to tourists planning to visit the islands.
“Carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing from the United States. If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, even inadvertently, we will not be able to secure your release from custody,” the U.S. Embassy in Nassau warned.

Apparently I read this happens all the time as their scanners are very inaccurate and can't seem to figure out the difference between pants and a gun. But yet when people bring actual bullets on board, this is missed? Clearly the results of another useless government organization.

Turns out our son had grabbed it out of the hall closet to pack his clothes and toys in to stay at his Grandmother's while we were out of town, and I didn't know he'd taken it. I ended up using my range bag instead. Never thought to check it, and got tagged at Cincy Intermational with 2 9mm rounds down in the bottom. Nothing came of it, but I did have to leave them with security before boarding. The security guy laughed and just told me to double check in the future, as ammo is expensive.
Second time was on a trip to Alabama to go hunting with a friend that lives down there, and I'd been rushing to pack as I was late, and threw my range bag (it's an old gym-bag I've had for about forever) into my luggage thinking I might need it. You should be 😊. Even if you don’t get into any real trouble if they find something, you’ll still have some ‘splaining to do.
I once found 2 spent 9mm casings in my coat pocket while standing in line for security. They must have bounced in there at the range. Luckily I found them before going through the scanner.
Also, I got selected once for an enhanced security screening (in the USA), and they took swabs off my coat and luggage to scan for drugs. And they found traces of gunpowder, since I wear that coat to the range. They accepted that explanation, but not after going through everything with a fine comb. A hassle that’s best avoided.

I recently flew with firearms and did so successfully because of this channel. Don’t worry about double checking your luggage to see if you packed all your toiletries, but quadruple check to make sure you’re not missing details that makes your lawful firearm transport into an illegal one. On the way back I had a pucker moment when TSA said come with me. They scanned my luggage that contained the firearm and asked what they were going to see is what they’re expecting to see. That’s when I started replaying in my mind of what and how it’s packed. In the end they said thanks, have a safe flight. For a minute though I was kinda sweating it.😂
