- I've been on a late-70s kick recently, which is an important period for me as it's the first contemporary music that i remember. Rupert Holmes created a bar-room classic with this witty piece in the winter of '79-'80 which has been a boon for the sales of pina coladas ever since. Holmes, who grew up in the NYC suburbs (real name Dave Goldstein), went into composing musicals after his pop career; he wrote the Tony Award winner Drood in the early 90s, and also created a successful television show, Remember WENN. Holmes said that he recorded Escape (the official title of the Pina Colada Song) using a 16-bar loop of repeated chords that never changes, a feature that works to highlight the skillful wordplay and phrasing which makes the song so memorable (as well as difficult to sing!) No commercial use.
