  • Tears in Heaven, an iconic ballad from the winter of '91-'92 released at the height of the MTV unplugged era (i consider this period as still part of the 80s), is the 2nd biggest hit of Eric Clapton's 50-year career after I Shot the Sheriff. The following winter, the song swept the Grammys, winning Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Male Vocal Performance. Clapton co-wrote the lyrics with Songwriters' Hall of Famer Will Jennings, who was the lyricist for nearly all of Steve Winwood's commercially & critically successful music during the 80s (i was surprised to learn recently that Winwood generally did not write lyrics - the main lyricist in Traffic was drummer Jim Capaldi). Tears in Heaven, which lends itself well to piano interpretation, also has another Winwood connection, as it was produced by Russ Titelman, the producer for Winwood's smash Higher Love album in 1986. Thanks for listening and no commercial use.
