The Natives and the English - Crash Course US History #3

- čas přidán 10. 06. 2024
- In which John Green teaches you about relations between the early English colonists and the Native people they encountered in the New World. In short, these relations were poor. As soon as they arrived, the English were in conflict with the native people. At Jamestown, Captain John Smith briefly managed to get the colony on pretty solid footing with the local tribes, but it didn't last, and a long series of wars with the natives ensued. This pattern would continue in US history, with settlers pushing into native lands and pushing the inhabitants further west. In this episode, you'll learn about Wahunsunacawh (who the English called Powhatan), his daughter Pocahontas, King Philip's (aka Metacom) War, and the Mystic Massacre. By and large, the history of the Natives and the English was not a happy one, even Thanksgiving wasn't all it's cracked up to be.
Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. The English tried and failed for a decade to establish a foothold in the New World in Native territory, leading to the lost colony of Roanoke: www.commonlit.org/texts/settl...
When Jamestown was finally established in Virginia in 1607, the local Powhatan tribes sought friendly relations with the settlers, which quickly deteriorated: www.commonlit.org/texts/chief...

This is my summer hw so yup cramming all the info I can for the test when I go back to school 😅😂
Hello fellow student

john green the history guy
naomi cambridge i was going to say that
Meaning he is not qualified at all and just gets paid to speak propaganda all day?

"You English since you have came into this country have grown exceedingly above the ground. Lets see how well you grow when planted into the land."
DAAAAAAAAAAAMN THEY TALKIN MAD SMACK
Well...considering how the war turned out, they grew pretty nicely I guess!
Its so metal I love it.
White people out here hating their own families, unable to dance, and polluted the globe with their greed. The seed that was planted was doomed on this land to begin with.
@@Ameya274 lots of dead white people.
@manky toe nail06 what's your personal contribution to humanity??
It makes my heart so happy when people actually learn about the native americans instead of asking me ignorant questions like "how are you guys still alive"
And you guys are avenging ur ancestors by running casinos and stealing white ppl's money
NiggaBlossom well I guess we don't have much left now do we. With our low population, our reservations under attack and many other problems going on we have to make a living too but I guess it wouldn't be the land of the free without pushing down the people who lived here in the beginning.
Um
Do you all still have promiscuous sex, and reject the belief of Jesus Christ and Judeo Christians? Are you interested in being part of modern America? Sorry for your troubles, everybody's got em though. Hopefully we can live in peace.
you're such a disgusting person. i could not imagine being you, saying things like that, after all that your ancestors have done to the Natives. Insensitive then, insensitive now. Gross.
I wish you were my history teacher.
Agreed! I think I would have actually enjoyed learning history if my teachers had taught more of the "why?" questions addressed here, and shared the history instead of the mythology. It was such rote memorization of name-date-place, name-date-place.
Kate C. Thats interesting. Where i come from this is considered the old discredited school of History. Modern history teachers (again, where i come from) focus almost exclusively on the "why" and don't care too much if you misremember an event by a few years or a decade. And you're right, that approach is very conductive to the appreciation of History.
I think his videos are more than enough. He is teaching more people on the internet than he could ever in classrooms.
He is.

John Green sure speaks in a rapid manner. However, the beauty of U-Tube allows me to backtrack the video as much as I need to. The ability to do so actually makes learning from Crash Course video more efficient than sitting in a classroom.
HeavensDemon966 You can turn the speed down too. Or if you are like me, you can turn it up to x2. I trained myself to cram faster in law school. It also helps in lectures to have a quick ear. The trick is to start at a speed you can do and keep notching it up as you get comfortable.
Geoffrey Langbart Or you can just take adderall duh...

+Maria Camacho Thank you! Good idea!
+HeavensDemon966 sometimes there are funny comments added too lol
I loved that last comment you said about how the Indians were a part of U.S History, and not ones who were acted upon it. It felt so powerful to me, and now I wanna read the whole chapter in my text book again. Thanks John Green!
The Union flag was adopted by England in 1606. Scotland adopted it in 1707. I will admit that it was usually used on ships during the time we're discussing here, but it was definitely around. -stan

My teacher was talking about the earlier colonies in America, and when she scrolled past this video, I just knew I was going to find my next favorite CZcams channel. When I got home that night I took out my phone and immediately started binge watching Crash Course. John Green was just icing on the cake for me, really!
"The Story of How I Came Across Crash Course's Channel"
You get to be such a fan that I was in class and from my class I heard the opening and screeched " CRASH COURSE". My teacher is pretty cool so she made me look it up and we spent the rest of the day watching them lol.

"I hate this, I hate this so much.... It's worse now, 'cause I've had it before, so I know it's gonna--*GAAAAHH!*" Best one ever!
this should be a show on TV and remove the everything else on the history channel
Actually, that's not a bad idea, considering the only thing on the History Channel now is "Wild Man" and "Tanked" which I believe has nothing to do with American history, let alone actual history

In college, don't have tests, don't need to spend literally an entire day binge watching the 42 episodes of the World History playlist. It's 5:53am, and I fully intend on watching the entire US history playlist in the same fashion.
I see no problem with this...
I'm homeschooled and this is the best part of my day learning with john green!
Growing up in Canada, I always wanted to take history courses about other regions, including Middle Eastern History, Asian History and Polynesian History. Thanks for the entertaining and free US History course! :P :)
Came back here after 4 years just for him to help me with my US History. Thank You. 😂🙏🏾
Excellent source for US history, thank you Mr John Green and the team at Crash Course.
My 13 year old daughter found your segment for Thanksgiving and shared it with me! Keep it up! This is awesome. We love the way you deliver the information and the way you describe the accuracy of what we know compared to what is the truth!

wow I would've never guessed :^) it's like they already took down 20 or so videos because of how inaccurate they were...
In the spirit of accuracy (leaving out the political innuendo), the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts does not nor ever did have the picture of an Indian with the words in a 'bubble' saying: "Come over and Help Us". That seal was used by the "Massachusetts Bay Colony". It was used from 1629-1686 when it was 'annulled' and then again from 1689-1692. So, yes it was used by the MBC, but has NOT been used for 324 years. To quote John "... the Massachusetts seal WHICH FEATURES (which infers it is the current seal) an Indian saying: "Come over and help us". (emphasis added). John, mispronouncing things is OK in this format, but not giving false/misleading information.
Forgot the source of the above: www.sec.state.ma.us/pre/presea/sealhis.htm
I really wish this had been available when I took AP US History. The mystery document part would've helped so much with the essays!! Thanks for producing this!
That Star Wars reference at 3:50 though
How great would America be if settlers decided to go native? I wanna go to that alternate reality, tbh.

WildRosechan we’d be hundreds of years behind in technology. It’s a hallmark of human history that a stronger power comes in and wipes out a weaker one. It’s happened that way for thousands of years.
It would probably suck balls.
We call it Canada. Lol
but dat means no fortnite
1. The first English Settlers came to the Chesapeake area (now Virginia) in 1607.
2. Both the European and the Indigenous traded goods that they had in surplus to those they did not. The English were happy to give up iron utensils, tools, guns, woven cloth, in exchange for furs and, especially in the early days, food which the Indians could easily part with because they had plenty.
3. John Smith is important to the Indian and European story because when he left Virginia for England after being injured in a gunpowder explosion, things between the Native Americans and the English immediately began to deteriorate.
4. The English went back to stealing the indians crops and also began stealing their lives (they killed a lot of the Indians)
5. In 1675, Native Americans launched their biggest attack on New England colonists in what would be known as King Philips War.
Love how this man teaches the truth :)

Too bad the intenet wasn't around when I was growing up, but I can't complain since I had some great books and teachers who encouraged me. Hi, Crash Course is the bomb! Do you guys have transcripts of your shows? I am an ESL teacher and it would be great to use your stuff, but it would be very tricky for non native speakers to understand. Thanks so much for your work!

BEST thing to listen to in the car on the way to an APUSH test. SO THANKFUL for these videos
The ending statement was amazing!
I met the Pueblo Tribe not too long ago and saw them greet the sun on the first day of the year. It was below zero weather and they were performing their rituals in loincloths and not much else, while we stood there in 4 layers of winter clothing freezing our behinds off. My first though was: how the hell did these people lose to us? Pueblos are tough as hell.
This is what Hank would call "the destructive effects of an invasive species on indigenous ecological balance"
No better words to describe it.
I love all of your videos! Please keep em coming.
Patching this before my class, so helpful
"The Indians lived all over this land before we came and killed them
That was very bad of us
We thought we needed the land
But for the most part
We just ruined it anyway
And now, nobody can use it
That's the way we are
We're pigs
One of my favorite foods to eat is called corn
The Indians call it "maize"
We call the Indians "Indians"
This is because Columbus thought he was in India
When he first came to this land
Some people say we should call the Indians "Native Americans"
'Cause they were here in America before us
But before us, this land wasn't called "America"
It was named "America" by a mapmaker who never even came here
He just lived in Europe
And made maps and when he found out about this land
He just made a map of it
And just put his name on it
'Cause he could
That's the way we are
We're pigs
As I was writing this
A cockroach fell from the sky and onto the table
I killed it
'Cause I did
That's the way I am
This doesn't really have very much to do with the Indians, though
I guess I got kind of sidetracked
Anyway, I hope you see my point"

Red priest I am not among pigs. Well I am not happy that American indians were largely destroyed. And Peace should always be sought as much as possible, but sometimes peace is impossible, and then somebody got ta die. Would you rather be living in a grass and mud community tribal hut, and have to be in the position of destroying the United States, would that be better? And try talking about the great indian spirit which is related to corn or animals, maybe you could go into a shaman indian trance getting high on whatever. Indian destruction is real sad, but what would you have done, and What can you do now?

They followed mercantile theory, which basically said more land = more wealth = more power. They were in a constant war with France, so they took America to generate more work and thus more goods and thus more wealth. The whole plan was to just get as rich as possible so that they could be better than France.
