When is Thanksgiving? Colonizing America: Crash Course US History #2

- In which John Green teaches you about the (English) colonies in what is now the United States. He covers the first permanent English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the various theocracies in Massachusetts, the feudal kingdom in Maryland, and even a bit about the spooky lost colony at Roanoke Island. What were the English doing in America, anyway? Lots of stuff. In Virginia, the colonists were largely there to make money. In Maryland, the idea was to create a colony for Catholics who wanted to be serfs of the Lords Baltimore. In Massachusetts, the Pilgrims and Puritans came to America to find a place where they could freely persecute those who didn't share their beliefs. But there was a healthy profit motive in Massachusetts as well. Profits were thin at first, and so were the colonists. Trouble growing food and trouble with the Natives kept the early colonies from success. Before long though, the colonists started cultivating tobacco, which was a win for everyone involved if you ignore the lung cancer angle. So kick back, light up a smoke, and learn how America became profitable. DON'T SMOKE, THOUGH! THAT WAS A JOKE!

AP students flock to crash course as they panic in the realization that the exam is soon and they haven't studied enough: a novel.
So true XD
Lmao nah, this is just my hw
GhostOfBlue hahahahahahah :)[ smiles ] ( because it’s so true )
GhostOfBlue I have to study 22 chapters each of which is 25+ pages and I have other classes. This is easier
So true
'They would rather starve than farm.'
I have some friends about whom is often feels like they'd rather starve than microwave a hot pocket.
(hot pocket: totally worth it!)
Lol is this a reference to hanks bio vid
unintentionally yes, but just really like hot pockets

I swear, more than 50% of the comments here are about some AP Test but I don't even live in the US and I am just watching this for fun!
+
It's kind of hard to concentrate on the fun of history when you have such an important test as the AP history one :)
That Piñata Girl well I have a history test tmr on WWII in Europe and Asia and the Cold War so I understand how you must have felt
do you want a sticker?

Hi John, did you know your Crash Course videos are official high school curriculum now? My son is a high school student in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Houston, and even though it's Saturday night, he's diligently watching your videos and taking notes as instructed by his teacher. (Truth be told, he's always loved Crash Courses and introduced me to them a year ago.) Thanks for making education fun and, most importantly, concise!
I believe this is an actual dad simply because he started a CZcams comment with Hi John. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)
C'mon dude, it was 2 years ago, probably his son already live alone, lmao. leave it.
Pretty sad how teachers can't even do their jobs
@Sun Shine ... what?
@@ct8377 ...So the teacher assigning homework in the form of taking notes on supplemental material constitutes "not doing their jobs"? That's...an idiotic thing to say.
I just realized this is the guy who wrote paper town and the fault in our stars.....
I did not realize this was the same John Green
I thought it was a different one..
wow mindblown
are thosebooks anygood? Ii just know this guy from here, this is the best channel ever
***** i havent read the books but according to people (mostly girls) it is really good
The Fault in Our Stars is pretty good, wish it was longer.
omg I thought it was too.
chaeun han lol
I am still confused as to how these guys make learning history entertaining but I guess I'm not complaining.
I'm more confused as to how my History Teacher made it boring. This is all fairly fascinating and eventful stuff.
UnknownXV Story of my life
That must just be your history teachers that make it boring because mine are the best
I love how mean John is to himself. Really makes me feel warm inside, and that kind of concerns me.
This was posted 10 years ago but looks better than every video you see now a day
We celebrate thanksgiving in October because if we waited until November there would be a foot of snow...
-Canada
But that's like not celebrating Christmas in December cause there's like 5 feet of snow
That is different though because Christmas is a religious holiday that has to be celebrated that day, Thanksgiving has a fluid date so it can be celebrated any month or day you want.
Thanksgiving is based on the harvest of the crops. It occurs in the autumn because that is when you have had a whole year of (hopefully) successful harvest. If you waited until november in Canada to harvest your crops, they would be dead. Autumn is the harvest season, ours is shorter and occurs earlier thanks to our latitude with respect to most of the U.S. Therefore it makes sense to have it earlier.
Aaron Smith yea, but Jesus was actually born in summer Haha
+Don't Even Bother We have the same problem in Minnesota, and we celebrate Thanksgiving in November.
Mr. Green, I work at the Jamestown Settlement museum in Williamsburg Va and if you ever find your self in my neck of the woods it would be an honor to give you and your guests or family a private tour of the museum. Thank you for all the work you do.
FINALLY! Someone who mentions "America's" founding was by indigenous people. Every single step of the way, indigenous people have been there to help, "America." And still to this day!
Right . . . . thanks for the help on the mayflower compact and the help in the creation of constitution and declaration of independence. Thanks for the help in the Jamestown Massacre, Pequot War, Anglo-Powhatan Wars, King Philip's War, and King William's War. So much help I can't even deal with it.
Your attempt to refute Native American influence in the founding of this country is nothing less than complete ignorance and whole hearted racism.
MegaMentholMan HA!!! You just made my day. I gave you 5 different wars where Native Americans slaughtered colonists across 24 years and the best you can say to defend yourself is "you're racist." What a thought provoking and intelligent defense. You know, just because you don't like the fact that native americans slaughtered thousands of colonists across 5 different wars doesn't make me racist.
You conveniently cherry pick historical events without learning why and how they happened. You also take your information from biased sources. So, yes. You are racist to use such information to paint an entire race of people by only 5 acts over many years.
MegaMentholMan It was FIVE wars over 25 years!!! Five!!! All started by the native americans! There's no cherry picking to be done, those wars and the tobacco industry growing are the only part of american history in that time. They happened because evertime the americans sent a peace treaty the native americans attacked them AGAIN.
I like how he broke it down in depth about thanksgiving and the real history behind it
"And nothing sells like drugs!"
GOD, I nearly died laughing. This series makes history so entertaining I love it!
"Nothing sells like drugs." Sounds like Walter White.

I'm not here for APUSH I'm not even in America I just watch this because I want to learn about history.
same
So glad I can watch this instead of reading my APUSH textbook. It's practically the same thing.
Yeah. After listening (including all the silly jokes) reading doesn't suck so much.
yeah ! me too this is so much fun thn reading handouts of civilisation module hhhh
I feel bad for the people who can't catch on to John's obvious sarcasm
To be completely honest, I've always hated learning about History, but this is the first time that I've watched a history video, and liked it. Crash Course is awesome to learn about history because it makes history fun and exciting. I love it!
Anyone back to these amazing playlists for exam prep? Also anyone doing GED?
My ancestors were from Virginia but they left the US after the revolutionary war and settled in Canada as United Empire loyalists.
nice
TRAITOR BE GONE!!!! Just kidding
APUSH Marathon!
Yep you right tho!

I first shit in a pint glass to this song in a pub lol
Ciggy Harris Maybe it's because it's 5 in the morning and I'm really tired, but your comment made me laugh pretty hard.
Who else is watching these because they're interested in history and not just because they have exams coming up? :)
Me, but I did take the test last year before I knew about Crash course. Oh the dark, dark times
Me, these videos are helping me catch up with all the history is didn't learn in high school haha
ME, I am a neuroscience major, but I love learning about history. These videos put everything into great perspective.

I watching all this us history video because I have an MYA exam on Friday 😗
In Canada we don't celebrate thanksgiving in October because that's when we think it happened we celebrate it then because we harvest crops earlier because of our somewhat colder winters and we would rather have fresh vegetables in October then not so fresh in the middle of November.
"Just because they had a democracy system doesn't mean they believed in equality or anything, because no." love simplicity! Studying for my APUSH test!
Omg, why have I never seen this channel before? I can't stop watching. (Yes, I'm a history nerd).
Ap test on Friday and I'm here cramming for the next five days
Kenneth Rayo don’t worry, you are most certainly not alone
You are not alone... I have also made a grave mistake...

I have my first APUSH test tomorrow. Watching this is tons better than reading the textbook. Thanks, Crash Course!
I would love a Native American course. I took one in college and it was amazing. I think that John would have an awesome time with it
Everyone here is studying for tests...
I'm just bored.
right. Thank god I watched rick and morty, now my iq is so high I watch this in my free time
So, I watched rick and morty all season 80x. Your IQ does not increase from watching it. In-fact, just looking at Jerry and morty hurts my head. Btw, I'm also studying because I want a head-start in history class the next day.
Have you guys made a math channel yet? It would be nice if someone would make math fun instead of monotoned.
I was looking for math on crash course yesterday. It would be a relief to have them simplify and make math interesting
Ikr
Have you tried Kahn Academy? I don't know if you would like it but their videos have helped me a lot with maths.
Lara Dorne I have but I can't focus with them. I can actually focus when it's enjoyable to learn.
I understand if its hard to focus with Kahn:)
...Is that a centaur playing golf on your shirt?
It's a polo shirt...
Light Daggar Well, I don't wear many polo shirts, but I know not all of them have a centaur playing golf as the designer's logo.
Pearl Carol en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polo
+Pearl Carol It's a specific brand, and it's a guy riding a hourse playing Polo, hence the name Polo shirt. I wouldn't expect you to know exactly what it is, unless you shop in the men's department
It's the Ralph Lauren logo.
I just started teaching History and your videos have been a godsend! Not only are they informational, they are super fun to watch.
I remember watching these videos in high school as homework. Now here I am. In college. Still watching these videos as homework.
Love Crash Course! Keep it coming guys! You are such a beacon for this upcoming generation, and a great resource for older inquisitors! Every episode is gold!
Hey John,
I'm thrilled ! Thank you so much for the U.S history videos. I am a teacher and always try to make my lessons as interesting and exiting as possible - the kids love watching short clips while talking about boring history.
Keep on the good work !
Also, not all of the people on the Mayflower were Pilgrims. My ancestors, the Billingtons, were poachers in England. They were described as "low fen dwellers." They left England one step ahead of the law. John Billington was hung in 1630 on trumped up charges. That's our story and we are sticking to it.
Thank God I found this. Read my history chapter about 3 times before and NOW it makes sense. I will keep viewing these until I am done with the class which is online. You have summarized the chapter point by point successfully. You may take all history professors out of the job.
We watched this at school. Thank you so much, John Green! I feel like my teacher now regrets showing us this because now everyone is asking to watch more.
Using Crash Course to study for History and Chemistry midterms. You and Hank are a godsend.
Seriously, these videos have got me through every history exam I've done in life, just keep returning back to them. Thanks so much!! :)
So you’re telling me that the Mayflower Compact is basically Constitutions great grandfather?!?
I finished Crashcourse World History an hour ago, now I’m going to binge every ten or so hours of this series.
yeah exactly, I'm taking AP US History and these videos are so helpful! I got a 5 on my AP Euro exam with the help of John Green and his crashcourse crew!
I watched a lot of CCWH when studying for the FSOT last fall. I haven't watched much since I took the test. I was so, so happy to see CCUSH! Thanks, so much!
Squonto walked into camp and asked in perfect english..
"Do you have any beer?"
I have my apush final tomorrow, and I would like to just say GOD BLESS YOU JOHN GREEN!!! You are literally saving my grade right now

happy lol girly gamer I'm good
Studying for the AP test!! Yayy! This is really helpful because it refreshes history and brings all of the stuff I learned 9 months ago to the forefront of my mind. You've definitely made me a fan.
I watch this series twice, it's the best series of crash course. John green is so enthusiastic and awesome! go john green!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best kind of education is when your teacher doesn't hold back on cracking dark jokes during the lecture
This is an amazing thing you've done. I understood this better than I've ever understood my high school American History class. Thank you! :)
Great video as always! I'd be really interested in countries history ✨😎‼
Love these crash course shows. Can't believe I'm just now finding them! These are amazingly good!
Squanto's big role in helping the pilgrims
Alright I have 13 hours until my mock AP exam. Let's do this.
These videos have made my online college course so much easier!
I'm Brazilian and I never understood American history...TILL YOU!!! Thanks for the awsome video !!!
I'm not just subscribed, I'm HOOKED. This is what I will watch before bed every night. Thank you for some straight-up history!!!
Good sir, may I say that I love your crash course presentations. Thank you to you and the entire team of amazing people for bringing this very well balanced, informative and eloquent show to us all.
Love the Scott Pilgrim reference!
Thank you for your amazingly informative videos!
Thanx John. I am in Jamestown ND, and YT recommends this vid day before thanksgiving 2022
Let me begin by mentioning how good, useful, and fairly objective your videos are. I would like to commend your team on the achievement. I also had a question.
Question: At the time that you mentioned the second Chesapeake Colony (Marlyland) you used two words: Proprietary and Land grant. So who is getting the money and whose is giving away land? I am not sure if I understand the land ownership structure yet. Thank you!
these videos are cool but I wish the lectures weren't so sped through. Hard for some of us to take notes and keep up.
These videos help learn things I should've learned long time ago. I found them super instructive & interesting. Thank you John Green.
good to know that I'm not the only one watching these instead of studying. all you need is a three! keep reviewing!
"American mythology" what a good way to describe it.
I live in Brazil, and I was studying about Brazil's colonization. So I searched it in English and found this video. My classmates always ask how I could be from the US and not know it's history (I came when I was 8), so thanks to you now I know exactly what to tell them.
My APUSH teacher makes us watch a Crash Course video everyday and we have to take notes on it, which is why im here ahah. Even my history teacher last year would put Crash Course on. It's definitely a highschool thing now
Found another video series to binge! Thanks guys!
Watching this on Thanksgiving! Have a lovely thanksgiving all you Americans! ♥
Who else is watching all of these videos in preparation for the AP test on Friday?
Emily Netherton i
Holy stuff! My REL321 class at ASU assigned me a crash course video! Nice.
Dear Crashcourse,
I wish to make a highly desired suggestion in about a new Crashcourse segment for the near future, that being about Australian History. Children in Australian schools complain about it being boring and repetitive and so almost completely ignore its existence; this makes me sad. I wish for someone as talented as you to show us that will get us interested in our own history again. In any case, thank you for the great work!
From a fan. :)
Why School this days don't teach the entire History of Colonizing? the entire History. there actually more than what they have in school books
Lol

Likin' the Chappele's show reference at 3:22
This really helps future me in social studies or Aka history. Thanks! Now I know about Jamestown.
I'm so happy! I got the author of the mystery document. I learned about the "city upon the hill" metaphor by John Winthrop in tenth grade history. Since that was four/ five years ago, I didn't remember the title, but I got the author and I am so proud.
Am I the only one who notice that his computer has the words "This machine kills fascists"?
You are aware that that phrase was on Woody Guthrie's guitar? I assume the reference is deliberate.
Who is woody guthrie?
Nam Chanachon Google is your friend. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woody_Guthrie
Great Pierre I know it was still inspired by some big music figure. Might've been Guthrie.
APUSH CRAM SESSION LETS GO!!
Nice touch of romana and Scott with the pilgrims
So i just learned in my American History Class that Thanksgiving was a holiday or party that the Wampanoag people had already been celebrating forever and shared with the pilgrims! i was shocked, no one talks about that, the wikipedia page on Thanksgiving doesn't mention that at all either!
I dont know why i waited this late to watch 9 hours of history
I love the collective APUSH panic in the comment section. Past APUSH-ers and future one coming together to study and cry
I love this channel! I'm not studying for an AP test but my Social Studies teacher exam! I got the mystery document right too!!!
You have made my life so much easier in History class. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
I am also planning to take Anatomy and Physiology and I saw that you have a course for that too. :) THANK YOU
I REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GUYS AT CRASHCOURSE! Your VERY VERY unbiased! I support you very much so!
I’ve never shocked myself more than knowing it was Winthrop who wrote the document 😯
cramming for history midterm for tomorrow- THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE VIDEOS
I'm taking APUSH next school year so I'm going to watch every single video on US History and takes notes, gotta be prepared for the class!
hopefully these dope vids will help my apsuh test be a pretty decent piece of pie
"Save Ginny" shirt noted and greatly appreciated.
Your channel is amazing, thank you!
This is great for my new semester class, cool channel guys!
Everyone here is like 'got the test practically tomorrow' while I'm just starting my prep. Please tell me i'm not the only one.
Guys, who else is watching all of these in preparation of tomorrow?
Your shock pen keeps changing brand... hrm...
Great episode as usual John! :)
Its's a very nice thing to watch and teaches you good stuff.
