Homemade Swimming Pool Vacuum.

  • In this video, we make a homemade swimming pool vacuum. Over the last 20 years, we have went through multiple Polaris pool cleaners that utilized an independent pool pump. They would last a few years and the pump or the cleaner would die. They Never did a great job as they were totally random. From there, we went the independent robotic pool cleaner (Dolphin brand). They would work OK for a year or two and then problems would arise. I was never happy with any of these options.
    One year, we were on vacation and I was drinking coffee pool side at sunrise and had the opportunity to watch the hotel staff clean the pool at this resort. They basically had a similar unit to the one we made. I had that light-bulb moment watching them work. From there, I decided to make my own self contained pool vacuum. The other nice thing is that the Texas Winter Storms taught us was it's nice to have a back-up pool system in the event your primary system goes down.
    Our homemade system does both. It's an independent pool vacuum and a secondary pool filtration system. We will put some links below to the various parts we ordered on Amazon.

    I like that there is no need to fill up the pool because the cleaner is recycling the water, just putting back in what is coming out. Pretty great invention.

    I’ve been looking for something like this; I don’t like dirt going into the equipment and sometimes it sends it back to the pool.
    If you get it all out, then you will only use the pool equipment to filter and circulate the pool.
    Thank you so much for this video.

    This is really great. I saw a pool pro using one and started searching for how to build one when I came across this video. Pool pumps are expensive so I love that you found a more affordable one for this setup. My pool filter is terrible when using the vacuum. I just don't get enough suction not to mention it is a hassle to setup. Love this solution. Thanks for sharing!

    I have all the items needed except the cart and I bet there is one on our property somewhere. We have a 15 x 30 above the ground pool that is surrounded by trees and an empty dirt lot next door. Had a guy come to clean the pool and he just carried a pump and a hose. I loved it and said oooo I need to do that. But yours is even better because it recycles the water. No waiting to fill pool back up. Thank you for sharing this great idea.

    Nice job, this is similar to mine, I also added a drinking water charcole filter in between the pump and the main filter. For a quicker filtration and less wear on the pump and electricity bill. Comes out crystal clear using no chemicals.

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello, 110v. I have to pour water into the pump before starting. , hold the hose under water to fill it and then turn the pump on. Takes a little practice to get it going. You can also leave the valve on the filter open until water comes out the top of it.

    • @Mebeknob

      Add a check valve on the inlet of the pump. Then when you prime the pump, the water won’t escape.

    Love this idea. I have a few questions:
    1)does the vertical pc of pvc pipe coming out of the pump need to be that high? Can it be lower before it turns 90degrees to the horizontal direction?
    2) is the 50sq ft cartridge filter typically used for above ground pool? Or do you need a filter for Inground?

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  Před rokem +2

      Hello thanks for watching. It’s been working great. Here are some answers.
      1. Yes, it could be shorter. In fact I plan to do that. It will make it easier to prime.
      2. This filter is designed for above ground pools, but it works great in this application. I just rinse it out after every use.
      Hope this helps. Thanks for watching g.

  • @RomanMatt1
    @RomanMatt1 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Question- why does your pump discharge line 'go vertical' above the filter, and then 'go down' into the filter intake? Seems like a waste of PVC pipe and elbows. Or, is that necessary to ensure the filter fills up completely and thus filters more efficiently. TIA

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  Před 3 měsíci

    If you have a Polaris 280 along with the Polaris booster pump, run it just an hour or 30 mins a day especially with a easy pool like that. You are looking at 5 years at least before the booster pump needs replacing.
    I understand you had these setups before but you probably ran it too much, also the Polaris 280 is very easy to repair, just have to know what to look for that needs replacing.

I then open the filter valve on top, then pour water into pump, and then turn it on. It struggles for a min or so, but ultimately takes off. When it’s sprays water out top of filter, I close that valve and I’m ready to go to work.

    If you are just filtering pool water and returning it to the pool, i dont think youd need the multiport valve on top. You're just pulling water in
    ..filtering it and sending it back to the pool. Of course, as you mentioned, you do have the full unit availabe as a replacement if your other assembly fails. Nonetheless...great job. You mentioned difficulty priming the pump, what do you think the issue is with that?

      Hello, I think you’re asking about the leaves and where they go? If so, they go to the skimmer basket in the front of the pump.

    Isn't it true that a cartridge will not filter out fine algae?

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  Před rokem

      Hello, I’m no scientist, but it filters out particles from the water. So I’m assuming dirt, algae, etc. as you can see in my video, we had a lot of dirt algae in the pool and it immediately cleaned up. Hope that helps. I also “shocked” the pool with a ton of chlorine which also helped.

    It appears your setup is pulling a lot of air, it also appears the return is low which means the unit is not pulling much water. I have made a similar setup but get tired of cleaning the cartridge on real dirty jobs

    Keep chlorine in that pool slip some chlorine tablets into your skimmers and floaters you wont have any issue if you simply blast it with chlorine .

    Thats nice but your pool already has that built in. You don't need to spend the extra money. Just hook your vacuum hose to your skimmer

    • @khardy111
      @khardy111 Před 2 lety

      I've had trouble getting that to work. Which is why I looked up for something like this. Im really looking for something that eliminates the need to fill the hose with water

      Using the pools system, it's vacuum to waste which means filling - refilling the pool, this is the best solution.

    • @Imwright720
      @Imwright720 Před 2 lety +1

      @@nktwrk73 the pools vacuum doesn’t go to waste. Depending on how you hook it it can go through your skimmer basket then filter or just through your filter. It always goes back to the pool after. The only time you go to waste is when your removing water for some reason.

      @@nktwrk73 Pool vac does NOT go to waste..it runs it through your filter system which it is intended for and back to the pool inlets. There is no loss of water and no re-filling whatsoever.

    His concept is really good. But the filter he has is a waste of money especially for that size pool. You’re better off paying for a decent size filter. Don’t waste your money on that filter. His electrical setup is nice. I wish I knew his electrical setup

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas

      The filter is the perfect size for a pool vacuuming. It’s not intended for continual use. Basically runs for 20 mins to clean pool.
