      Fun Facts:
      1.) Larry Bird once told an opposing team tell you what I can even beat you if I play this game left handed. Which he proceeded to do.
      2.) I can not remember who it was but Larry tapped him on his butt with the ball. It was like keep away mixed with pay attention. You need to see me score on you ( again )
      3.) He played with the Boston Celtics his entire career.

    When Bird was being treated for his broken cheekbone that he suffered when his face slammed against the parquet wood floor, what was also discovered by the Celtics' trainer was Bird had also suffered a concussion. But, the story goes that despite the trainer saying Bird was done and shouldn't play the rest of the game, when the trainer wasn't looking, Bird took off and ran back onto the court anyway, and he ended up being the main reason why the Celtics came back and won that series. Larry was not only a GREAT player, but he was also tough as nails.

    If Bird played in this cupcake NBA today with its soft rules and guys feelings being hurt, he'd get T'd up for his trash talking, alone. He would have to adjust his game to where instead of trash talking so much, he'd inflict even more damage to the other team via his offense. IMO, he would be a walking triple double MVP candidate every year and would refuse to collude with other players to build a "super" team.

      @davidnelms1664 Před 2 lety +2

      NBA today plays no defense. There are great defenders but great defense teams? It's like the old ABA and high scoring. Eras in sports are hard to compare but 80s 90s and even the 00s played two way ball. It's a softer more offense friendly game. Bird Magic Jordan Malone Mullins KJ Pippen and the list goes on and on and the mobile bigs would have killed it today. Imagine Dennis Rodman with the bulls able to play small ball with Rodman Kukoc Pippen Harper Jordan majority of the time. Damn look at the 92/93 Phoenix Suns roster and it alone would have destroyed the league. Old Lakers could have run magic worthy Cooper Scott Green. Bird's Boston squads could have run a small ball. Every Era can score but past generations had better shooters overall with killer midrange games and they didn't live off the 3 ball. So many players teams to name but past eras played ferocious defense. Just imagine a Mourning or Kemp or Robinson or Duncan or O'Neal or Garnett in small ball damn they would feast today. You would literally need Allstar teams to face those teams because they were built through the draft with a few trades to round out squads but they played together for SEASONS with continuity. These super teams of whining to get out and everybody treating it like school yard where you get to pick your team. Warriors are or were the closest to an old school squad built through the draft with few trades to fill out the team. They didn't need KG. Hell KG's OKC squads were great and built through the draft but they failed as a team. He's OKC squads were loaded but he and russ failed. One thing when a great player like a Barkley or Garnett has given a career on bad teams to want a chance to win but now its I'm a top 5/10 player but I need another top 10 or two to succeed. Bulls drafted Jordan and traded up for Pippen. Yes they acquired free agents but never grabbed a KG or LBJ etc. Rodman was given away by the Spurs. Harper was no longer the scorer from the clippers he once was but he could play D. Kukoc they lucked out at getting the best Euro player at the time, had he gone to another team he would have been an Allstar. Name the rest of the bulls? Most can't because they were role players who did their parts perfectly. Other major sports leagues defense is still a part of the game but NBA defense is an after thought. Plus college game is suffering which means less refined players they take longer to develop or they hit their ceiling to early or flame out. New development leagues won't fix the issues. Dunk and shoot 3s and everything else is an after thought. Simmons I don't mean to pick on but he's a great example. Basically 7' PG who shoots over 50% but is average at 3s. FT% is poor. For an all-star pg 8 assist looking for a max deal is a joke. 15 pts 8 asst 6 reb with his size and he's passiveness on the court shows how over valued players are today. Chris Paul is old school and dominates and he's 6'2"? Russ dominates and he's 6'4". Simmons should be a 20 10 and 10 or damn near close to it. Ft % sux so he's afraid to drive and pick and roll is horrible. High pick and roll defenders dare him. Enough my rant.

    I was at almost every big game in Boston Garden from 81 to 87, nothing like those 80's teams. The big draws were LA by far, then Philly with Dr J. Jordan was a non factor for years. Jordans first 7 years he got his azz kicked by Boston and Detroit. Dennis J, was one of the greatest under rated players of all time an one of my favorites. Magic, Jabbar and Worthy wow. Bird and DJ were awesome together. Got there early for a LA-Boston game, got on the floor and watched them practice. I was watching Bird and DJ, up behind me came Parish, he stopped and said how you doing? I almost shit myself he stopped and talked to me before he went out to practice. Will never forget this, love Parish, he's funny as hell too. Watch what he said about Jordan when the Celitcs beat Chicago. I'd take a few players over Jordan, I saw all the best, nothing like 80's BB, no wimps allowed like today's game.

      Larry hurt his finger (crushed knuckle) while in his last year of college playing softball. He hadn’t signed with the Celtics yet! He played his entire career with a mangled finger!
      As for his back, he hurt that in 85 shoveling gravel for his MOTHER’S driveway. His dad was already dead by then.

      Yep, Larry defeated Michael 6 times in the playoffs, and Michael never got back at him. In one of their games, Michael played like an absolute beast...I believe outscoring everyone with 63 points! Larry Bird claimed "God showed up to play disguised as Michael Jordan." Only thing was...despite Michael's amazing feat, no one else on his team was really scoring, while all the Celtics were scoring just fine. The Celtics STILL defeated the Bulls, despite that insane showing by Jordan!

    Kent Benson was an integral part of that 1975-76 Bobby Knight Indiana University team that was the last Div 1 college team to go undefeated for a whole season. Benson was MVP of that 1976 NCAA Championship. That having been said, he seemed to be a bit of a prick, and for sure could NEVER hold a candle to Larry Legend. Bird simply had the most desire and the best work ethic and was also just tough as nails. As far as all around basketball skills of shooting, passing, rebounding, assisting, and CLUTCH PLAY, I truly believe Larry is the GOAT. Athleticism like running fast and jumping high is extremely important but can sometimes be overrated. Basketball skills like finding the open man always rise to the top.

    Way back when the NBA was under complete control by David Stern star players picked up fouls just like everyone else. So, Collins taking Jordan off of Bird was done partly to keep Jordan out of foul trouble.
    I remember watching a Bills-Piston's playoff game and Jordan picked up his third foul 4 mins before the half. It was a big deal because Collins had to gamble on whether to leave Jordan out on the floor and risk picking up his fourth before the half. Jordan ended picking up his fourth early in the third rendering him useless on defense as the Pistons went right at him. This was a long time ago and if I remember correctly Jordan may have fouled out late in the game.
    THAT scenario would never happen now with today's star players.
