    Magic being HIV positive and not telling Bird isn't what hurt Bird. Bird had such respect for Magic and at that time, when one contracted the virus, the general reality was that you got thinner and thinner and died since it was early in the process of how to treat the virus. Bird likened it to his own father committing suicide; a death that traumatized him. He thought at the time that here is going to be another traumatizing death. You want to see what Magic has to say about it, watch the Magic/Bird special produced by HBO; a courtship of rivals or something like that. Magic can't make it through telling the story without being choked up a couple times because Bird DID call him when nobody else would; not even his closest teammates on the Lakers. In my opinion, that was the moment their friendship was cemented for all time. Fast forward and now HIV is manageable and Magic is expected to have a relatively 'normal', long life. And they're still best of friends. It's a remarkable relationship no matter how you cut it.

      They did a TV appearance on the David Letterman show that was to hype interest in their PLAY showing in NYC. I know a lot about Bird's past even more because I'm reading his autobiography "Drive". As far as Magic and Bird in the 1980s/1990 I get a kick that the Celtics had a big poster of Magic hung up in their locker room. The bulls eyes were his teeth for points and their nickname for him was "Cheesy".
      I'm just adding on to your comment. There is a great book co-written by Bird & Magic titled "When the Game Was Ours" Yes, AIDS was a death sentence but the scandal talk rags (and a lot of others "kindly:) was HOW DID HE GET IT? Also people thought that it was contagious. Take care.

      @@jameslafontaine198 There is also a documentary about the 1980 US Olympic hockey team produced around 2005(?) that is a must see. People today hear so much about their story and, in my opinion, have lost a feel for how historic that team was. It is a feature about the proverbial 'lightning in a bottle' scenario; a single team that lasted a single 'season' then went away but did the, at the time, impossible. Magic/Bird is more personal and very well done (both by HBO).

    Larry and Magic legit didnt like each other for the first few years. Larry hated that he got beat after a perfect season his last year in college. Their first year in the NBA Magic was pissed when Larry got Rookie of the Year when it was his team that won the championship Because they were so good, and so competitive the Lakers and Celtics were playing each other more than anybody else to boost ratings, and they really grew to dislike each other. Until they shot a commercial together at Larry's house. The director had them just shoot around, and have fun. They started relaxing and taking, realized they had a ton in common. Finally at lunch, Magic was walking off to his trailer, and Larry was like "No, my mom is cooking. Come in the house and have some lunch." They've been close friends ever since.

    The story about him going back to the same spot after his 3 was waved off is not exactly true. It's actually more impressive than that. After the timeout he hit a different shot to tie it up. Then in double OT is when he said he was going to the same spot and kick it in. And he did.

    • @kurtsherrick2066
      @kurtsherrick2066 Pƙed 2 lety +1

      That's right he tied it to go into OT. Then hit the winning shot at the end of OT. Some the things Larry did I remember without having to look at videos. The 60 point Atlanta Game has been replayed many times. That night he could have called anything like the Big Mac Commercials with Jordan and the ball would have gone in. The stuff that made him Larry Legend.

    Larry walks into an arena and asks one of the local kids, What's the scoring record here? Kid finds out for him, Larry proceeds to break it. Everyone says he was too small, (6-9?), too slow, no defense, can't jump. But he had heart. Like Maravich, he lived, breathed and slept with the game. It wasn't just a job. Never seen anyone use and abuse their body like him. He didn't have to chase loose balls. That's a lot of bulk hitting the floor. He made the game exciting and fun to watch. His trash talking and his ability to absolutely back it up added to that greatly.

    Larry tells the story of how much his mom loved Ervin. Larry was like "Ervin laid his charm on my mother and she ate it up. She loved Ervin." We're talking Ervin at Larry's mom's house in French Lick! Larry and Ervin are still close to this day. I remember that whole health thing and Larry being upset - Magic said when Larry called him "He was in tears." It really tore him up. Magic said that "At a time when a lot of friends were pulling away - Larry not only called him but flew out to be with him too. The coolest thing was that this all went on behind the scenes, on the DL. Many didn't find out 'til after they retired. MJ was in their group too!

  • @rickgould334

    Larry Legend is the most underrated HOF in my opinion. I think people overlook him, because he only has 3 titles and, a short 13 year career (which actually makes his numbers more impressive). Not to take from his friend Magic, or teammates Parrish and McHale, but Johnson had the better big 3, and is really the reason he beat Bird more times in the finals.
    If Bird's body hadn't fallen apart, his career would've certainly been longer, likely giving him a shot at more titles. Here's one last thing to put Larry Legend in perspective. In the 1987-88' season, with bone spurs in both feet, that led to surgery in the offseason. Bird's season stats were: 29.9 ppg, 52% FG, 92% FT, 9 rpg, 6 apg. Who you know plays like that, with two bad feet?
