This is Stone Town Zanzibar History. And today I'm going to show you around this gorgeous historical town.
Starting from this beautiful hotel room to on the back street, showing the history and architecture. Starting from the 1500s all the way to the 1900s.
And don't miss Freddie Mercury's house. Was he really born in Stone Town?
So because Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, it has loads of old architecture, history and culture as well, because it was the center of the Spice and Trade Centre in the 1800s.
Not just architecture, but it's the epicenter of East African Swahili culture. Has a mixture of Arab, Indian, Persian and all that kind of stuff
blended together. And don't forget, European culture as well.
Why is Stone Town Zanzibar, called Stone Town? So back in the 1500s,
the Portuguese ruled the island for about 200 years and they built a lot of houses out of stone.
They were the first European settlers. Then in 1600, a sultan from Oman took over the island.
A sultan, is like a ruler or king. Anyway, for protection, they built this.
This huge forts to protect themselves. And this is it. It's the oldest building in Stone Town. And the sultan built it to prevent future attacks.
Then in 1800,the British banned slavery around the Indian Ocean. So the Sultan and all the Omanis, they moved to Stone Town.
Then the whole island and Stone Town, thrived.
The Omani sultan built this huge palace here called the House of Wonder. That's why it's called House of Wonder, because all that tin foil on there. I wonder why they put it on there. No, actually, it's been refurbished. But it's a very significant building. You can see it when you're right here in Stone Town on the ferry.
So throughout the 1800s, the Omanis made a lot of money through trade, spices and slavery, and they also encouraged immigration as well. That's why there's so much diversity here
    for its culture and architecture.
That in 1896, the British had a war with the Omanis. Like 45 minutes, the shortest war. The British one, they still let allowed the Omanis to manage the island, but they opened more trade to Kenya and Dar es Salaam.
Then finally, in 1964, the Zanzibar Revolution, about 20,000 Indians and Arabs were killed. They basically ran off and left everything. Then finally, Zanzibaris ruled the island.
Now these are the famous doors of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Hand-carved. These doors can take at least one month. The brass knobs are throwback
design from India, which were meant to stop elephants bashing the doors. Swahili motifs include twisting vines, flowers or other emblems. Other Arabic influences are even more detailed. There are around 600 of these doors all over Stone Town. Some are 2000 years old and are still made today.
Stone Town is where Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, used to live. So it says actually he was born here In the Freddie Mercury Museum that he left at the age of eight. Then he went to India, but then he came back at for about one year. Then he went to the UK.

    Great architect-tour video man :D
But 3:50 surely the Portuguese didnt rule the island for about 2000 years,
And 4:26, also it would be nice to add little bit context on the "to prevent future attack" phase, like from whom those attack would be, portuguse? Alien? USA? :v
Anyway, architecture and history, two subjects that is inseparable, would be nice to make them both explained nicely

Ah yeah that was 200 years doh 😫 I forgot to edit that . Yeah I didnt really want to make the video that long really - as you can tell I’m not an expert on history ! Also I filmed a lot of stuff with another camera but I lost it all. So I had to put together what I had. Lucky to even get a vid out of this really. I did have trouble integrating them architecture and history together for sure. There isn’t much architecture in this to be fair . 🧠🧠🤯 Cheers

Hi Russell. Could you give me some advice?, Im currently financially stable and finally out of my “messing around” years. The only thing i have any interest in bar my family, is property and architecture. I’ve no education since college which was a completely unrelated course. What would you advise to start in a career of architecture . I’m looking for university courses surrounding architecture but pretty much needs to be within the open university as i travel ALOT an cant be based in one country/city. Many thanks
