- This discovery in Heart Gold and Soul Silver was made over a DECADE after the game released. Basically in Cianwood if you deposit all of your pokemon except an Abra that knows teleport and have no items or money left, you can end up softlocking the game and get stuck. If you talk to this NPC in the pokecenter, he notices you only have one pokemon and gives you a tentacool to help you out! It’s pretty incredible that the devs realized someone might end up stuck here and added this to prevent it.

It is not softlocked truly cause you can level up the AB by getting rid of the pp and struggle kill mons
Fun fact: apparently this is shiny huntable through soft resets :)
Everything except for event pokemon used to be shiny huntable in old gens, damn shiny lock

Keep in mind that you also need to be broke means no money and by the time you reach cianword you might have got 100k dollars and ain't no way i spend all that before elite 4

@Prakhar Singh the video is the poliwrath gym in hgss and it's not hard to go through most of your money in pots and balls by that point if mom is saving for you. Especially with how many optional trainers there are in johoto.

I knew about this but only by total accident. I lost a nuzlocke to chuck here and released my pokemon before finding the NPC. Btw, you don't specifically need an Abra with teleport, it's simply any pokemon that doesn't have access to surf.

The game won't let you release your last hm user so you release all and deposit the last hm user in the daycare and teleport back to cianwood city

There was a trend one time, people were trying to see in what ways you could softlock yourself in Pokemon games, without glitches or trading.

When I played regular silver he did that for me back in 2005.
But how do you end up on a soft lock? Since Gen 3 the games don't let you release your last HM user. Heck, Gen 4 took it a step further and the move deleter wouldn't let you *delete* an HM move if it was your last available user.
You could probably set cianwood as the Pokémon centre for teleport and then put your HM Pokémon into the daycare which might bypass it. At least it works that way in gen 3 I believe.
People who do no catching playthroughs really need to know this trick

How do anyone softlock themselves there? You can always fish for Poke if you somehow released all your Surf/Dive Pokes.

I did this when the game came out. Had no idea this wasnt something people knew about.
I knew about the tentacool cuz my corsola was poisoned and fainted shortly after, and on my way to the pokemon center i decided to talk to the guy and he shoved a free tentacool my way.
Cool Fact: If you try to soft lock on Cinnabar Island, it won’t work. Abra will teleport you to the last Pokémon Center you went to before you went to Cinnabar Island

Dont think you know what soft lock means cause 1. The mon he gives you and 2. You can get of pp of the teleporting mon and struggle low level mons to death
1) is fine, but for 2) How does struggling low level mobs get you out? You need money to buy pokeballs to catch something that’ll surf you free
2) You are still stuck in Cianwood with lvl 100 Kadabra.

It doesn't actually HAVE to be an abra. You can use any pokemon that can't learn surf or fly and that'll also work since without surf or fly you can't leave the island
No, any teleport pokemon. Thats how you get there in the first place lol. You can't release your last hm pokemon you use daycare first and then you have to teleport back to get there

When I got Pokémon Heartgold second hand, the previous player had left it in a Pokémon centre in Cianwood with only an Abra in the party and no Pokémon in the PC. I just assumed they had transferred all their Pokémon to a GenV game and that the Abra was just one they didn’t care about, and I deleted the save file so I could play the game from the start. But now I know what they were doing.

IIRC, this wasn’t available in the original games, and they added it to the remakes as a means of fixing the problem

Yeah I guess releasing them makes sense in order to get really softlock.
The real softlock is releasing all Pokemon and leaving your last HM user in Daycare. Then teleporting to Cianwood. But it isn't a softlock, because Tentacool is always available there.

Cianwood can't be a softlock spot the safari zone is right next door
Softlocking usually involves buying pokeballs with all your money and then throwing them away, so you'd be too dirtpoor to enter the safari zone if you were to softlock yourself in cianwood, or anywhere really.
@daine the thing is if you only have a Abra with teleport too , ditto can be found near the safari zone too so you can train off thoes using struggle till you get at least kadabra most trainers rematch you once you get their number
Safari Zone has entry fee. Also is it even available from the start? Same with all the trainers on the west from Cianwood - don't you need Surf to access them?
