      I add carrots, celery seed and a tbsp of red chilli flakes before pressure cooking. There are so many ways of making this. You could even add a bit of liquid smoke instead of ham if you don't eat meat.

    Great recipe. Only thing i would add is to make sure you go through your beans and check that you do not have any rocks in the bag and rinse the beans . That it was a great video idea.

  • @siliconpenguin
    @siliconpenguin Před 4 lety +83

    @4:28 he added the dry beans without washing them... That's how I did it for four decades. And then I tried washing(rinsing) them in a clear glass bowl. Just run water on them and agitate, dump the dirty water and repeat until the water stops being dirty. And yeah, sometimes the water looks like you just washed your dog in it. I always wondered why sometimes my beans tasted "earthy". RINSE YOUR BEANS!!

    works great. i love that it has stainless steal pot inside czcams.com/users/postUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and not the one with coating. we used to have a coated pot before, and the coating slowly peels, and i am sure went into the food that we cooked. Absolutely love stainless steel, and will not use a coated product again.This pot has many settings and many buttons, and i need to sit down with a manual to figure out which setting to use. I used the basic functions, and even though i am not technologically skilled, i turned it on and assembled it without any help.Very satisfied with this product overall.

My version tonight had: 5 diced hot Italian sausage (from the freezer), 1 onion, several small sweet peppers, chopped fresh green beans (cause they were in the fridge), 2 gutted yellow squash (cause they were in the fridge), chicken broth (from the freezer), chopped garlic, red chili flakes, ground mustard, ground cumin and about 2 cups lentils from a bulk container I had on hand. I didn't stop and blend. I let it go through the whole cycle. It was so delicious!

    I am nearly 81 years old, and I have never soaked my beans. Neither did my mother. It’s just never been necessary. I will be putting chunks of ham in my bean soup. That will add a lot of flavor. This is a decent recipe & somewhat similar to mine, but i'm 57 yr., old irishman from rural Ky where soup beans are a staple meal here & i've been cooking since i was 9. I prefer the great northern beans or pintos, but no matter what, i soak them covered in water overnight. Instead of some of your ingredients, i use a smoked hamhock, Lawry's garlic salt( Lawry's brand only) , & bacon grease/ lard in place of butter/ olive oil. I also make a mix of seasoned turnip/ mustard greens for a side item & real yellow corn meal cornbread,spread on real butter not sweet or that jiffy junk, & a bunch of green onions ( also, i like a cold glass of buttermilk, but most non-country folks won't like that) . Biggest tip of all i learned many yrs. ago, if beans cause you stomach bloating/discomfort, flatuent problems, or problems in the bathroom the morning after, i'd do this anyway no matter what, for the amount of beans you made in the instapot, appx., 12-16 ounce bag, add 1 level tbls., of sugar in the pot at the start & will cause a chemical reaction with the beans, no sweet taste in the beans, but will rectify all the unpleasing issues i mentioned. God Bless you all.

      Steve Logan Yep! Thanks for the sugar tip, I’ll try that next time. Bought some great northern the other day. Store was out of ham hocks (and every meat but smoked turkey legs and corned beef) so I bought necks instead.

      @@@TheSub2rainen you chose wisely friend, the turkey ( especially bone & skin) will add much more flavor to the beans than corned beef, & i'm irish so i speak truth on this issue, lol.

    Jeff, you are the best! Way to be current and comforting. Social distancing allowed me time to make bone broth from all my frozen Costco rotisserie chicken carcasses (in my Instant Pot, duh), so bring on the soup. Keep the videos coming! 💗 Heidi

    Great recipe. I started with a small onion and a small shallot and sautéed these along with some matchstick carrots. I used chicken broth and navy beans and for the seasonings, just Lawry's, pepper, garlic powder and thyme. Turned out great!

    I've had my IP for several months and have been watching endless vids on what to cook in it. I usually intend to make beans with frozen vegetables and chicken legs but it seems that no matter how I tweak the times I end up what you just cooked here (I don't blend it) almost no matter what I put in there. So good, btw. Thanks for everything.

    I just made this today. Did a 20 minute natural release and the beans were still a little hard. Had to pressure again at 9 minutes, still not soft enough. Did it again for another 9 minutes so we'll see! The soul tastes fantastic though. I used dry great northern beans. Love your you tube videos!

    New subscriber here! I posted on Facebook yesterday that I had made my first instant pot meal and several of my friends recommended that I check you out. I'm so glad I did because I've been wanting to make bean soup but I haven't found the right recipe. This one is it! I'll just add some ham instead of bacon and it will be pretty close to what I was raised on. Thank you!

    Love Jeff and his IP recipes! Big fan! Helpful tip: When cooking dried beans - of any kind - in an IP . . .
    Always 'Prepare' dried beans for safely cooking in an IP! Consuming under-cooked dried beans cooked in an IP / slow cooker can be dangerous if beans are not prepared properly for this type of cooking. How to avoid toxic tragedy: Throughly, throughly rinse beans, then soak beans OVER NIGHT; next morning, drain and rinse, rinse, rinse soaked beans in clean, cold water (multiple times); next, in fresh water boil beans in a separate pot, on the stove top, for 10 minutes then drain before following any IP dried-bean recipes. Your prepared beans should now be safe for preparing any 'dried-bean' IP recipes for drama-free consumption. (Sorry, yes, extra steps - necessary.)
