For what it's worth, I remember a couple years ago when I was in my car and about to change lanes, but then suddenly heard a loud motorbike. I couldn't see it anywhere. All I knew was that it was behind me somewhere. I chose to wait until the biker rode past me and then I changed lanes. One could argue that the biker shouldn't have been in my blind spot, but I'm not sure if it's possible for a biker to pass a car or truck without being in the blind spot for at least an instant. I don't have any plans to make my bike loud, but I'm convinced that at least that one time a loud bike spared a rider some potential harm.
I have to somewhat disagree with Dan on the loud pipes. I get what he's saying & yes a lot of ppl may not hear your pipes or even care. I do however agree with "Burnin' Leather" though. In my experience riding in Cali traffic on my daily commute & lane splitting, ppl actually hear me quite a few cars ahead when I'm approaching them & most move over & give me extra passing space. When I had my stock exhaust on, NOBODY could hear me coming & NOBODY would give me any space or scoot over even a little, unless I flickered my high beams & they saw it. That extra space most drivers give me makes a difference, whereas with my stock exhaust I've had ppl in both cars next to me creep over as I was passing cuz they never heard me & where I had to gun it to get outta the hazard. For me, I prefer that extra comfort of ppl moving over for me a bit but i do understand it's pretty loud. Lol!
Anecdotal evidence never cancels out the statistics. If you think they help, it gives you a false sense of security. Plus, all it really is, is annoying to everyone else. Giant semis are way louder than cars, why not allow cars to have loud pipes too?
@@johncspine2787 Don't mistake me & assume my louder V&H pipes gives me a sense of security while riding, cuz I'm ALWAYS on guard when lane filtering. What I'm saying is that IF one person decides not to cut me off/side wipe me bcuz they heard me coming, then I've achieved my goal & I've proven my point. As for statistics, this isn't one that can be measured since it's a cuda wuda maybe possibly type of scenario we'll never know cause the incident never actually happened. For me personally, I do as much as I can to be as safe as possible while riding (high beams on ,flickering lights, hazard lights on while filtering, retro-reflective vest over my jacket, reflective stickers on my helmet, wear all my gear at all times and etc.) & my pipes are loud but I wouldn't say they're obnoxiously loud, at least according to my friends i ride with. Lol!
I have to say I agree with you because I do the same thing when I hear the Roar of a Cruiser or the High pitch of a Sport Bike, it makes me look twice to see where they are. When I know where they are I feel more comfortable driving. But I have had Sport Bikes and Cruisers fly past me so fast I barely had time to hear the bike. And yes it can be annoying when bikers are just Rev Bombing the crap out of the bike especially when in groups. At the End of the day what saves lives is your safe riding skills and hazard perception because a loud pipe will notify others around you but won't Stop an accident from happening.
I do understand what Dan Dan the fire man is saying when loud pipes don't save lives, Because when a motorcycle is right next to a car that is merging over and they rev bomb it's usually too late for the car to notice, and at that point you should of been aware of the surroundings
I agree. I'm just starting to ride myself and even though I keep stalling and I'm turning way too wide (I know what to do, it's doing it that's another matter for me right now), I'm not giving up. I had to get gas and was able to get there and back only stalling once, and I hit 50 mph and felt amazing. That feeling alone is why I won't give this up.
Im there right now. Got to go get gas too and it is a bit intimidating, lots of people around gas stations and bikes draw attention so Im sort of worried I might make an ass of myself. lol
how has your motorcycling journey gone so far?
Man i was driving a HGV and still heard a bike comin before i could see it so i think the pipes may help.not always but it's a bonus
In Thailand, "Loud pipes take lives"
Your neighbors may shoot you out of annoyance
Krazed Hobbyist Pattaya pattaya do u love me mak mak
01:30 "I'm completely exposed. I feel the air, I feel the breeze. I feel free." Dan, are you riding 'commando'? :-o
Been there done that
Loud pipes are like guns, both have good use in the proper context and situation
Took the Team AZ course last October. Went down on the bike. Broke both wrists and an elbow. Still went on to finish and pass the test that day. Ended up getting surgery 2 months after. Bought a bike at CSA and still going to ride. Worth it 💯
Holy crap
That's dedication right there
You broke two wrists and an elbow in a parking lot going 20 miles an hour? Not making fun, but damn that's some bad luck
I wouldnt tell that story personally 🤣🤣
Loud pipes get noticed, just like sirens do . Not every time , but I hear the loud bikes and cars, yes I do.
Rider here. Really dislike loud pipes to be honest. And to me, loud pipes shouldn't make up a large part of a riders plan to stay safe. High rider skill PLUS Gear PLUS Anticipating Driver Actions = a good safety plan
If loud pipes ever saved one life, theb yes it does. Chances are it did at certain spots in the space-time continuum. The effectiveness and justification are another matter.
+ChaohsiangChen agree
Thanks for pointing out good reasons!! Please keep it up!!
I think one should never rely on a loud pipe "saving their life"...but I did just start riding about a month ago and have alerted a couple oblivious people. In the huge parking lots its useful. Low speed bumper to bumper traffic it also helps here in Florida. I think it all depends on where you live and the type of roads and traffic. Since I've moved to Florida (from Massachusetts) I have noticed the drivers are much more oblivious and have slow reaction time in the city area. Just my 2 cents though, I do partially agree with you Dan. Thanks for the videos! This is my first comment on your videos but I've been watching and liking for a while now. I learned a lot from your videos and definitely gained more confidence! Keep up the great work Dan! I share with others what I've learned.
"i'm exposed, i feel the air, i feel the breeze, i don't have a cage "
may i introduce you to my beach buggy mate? guaranteed helmet-free :P
Life long rider here 66 years old, I ride my Ducati and wear my shirt that reads loud PIPES POOR SUBSTITUTE for no SKILL!!!😎😎😎
That is an interesting argument against loud pipes. Though I don't believe it holds any water. We still have a long way to go before glass can hold that much sound out. You were even a fireman so you know people in cars can usually hear your sirens from a ways off.
Now I'm not for loud pipes. I think riders should strive to be skilled enough to handle any situation that may get thrown at them. Not rely on loud pipes to bring awareness to them.
I will say I bought a bike used that had an aftermarket exhaust that was pretty loud. Drove me nuts, but it was a good deal and I figured I could sell the exhaust after replacement. Before this point people were always missing me. I could look someone in the eyes and they still would pull right out in front of me. Not with that exhaust though! They may be giving me dirty looks, or a thumbs up, but they saw me. It reduced my near misses to around a 1/5th of what I had previously been dealing with on my rides. So like it or not it does bring more attention to the rider and therefore definitely has saved a life or two throughout motorcycle history.
Tyler A. Sirens on a fire truck are multidirectional. Your bikes exhaust goes straight out the back. If you are standing outside of a car you can hear it but not so much in the car with wind noise and the radio, or your kids arguing. Sure you might hear something but not very well.
Loud pipes make you loose your hearing, that's about it. But it make ya sound cool.
Pedestrians can hear you better. Stock pipe on Duke 690 and pedestrians don't hear me. Wings on Enduro 690 and they look up at the bark. Same engine, same year.
Actually on the Enduro 690 I just revbomb instead of honking. Faster and both the clutch and gas are already in my hand... Faster than finding the button with my thumb
Loud pipes. When I drive my cars I am super aware of bikes. In my MX5 I become aware there is a bike about when it gets within 100 yards + but with Pink Floyd on no chance. Recently a bike pushed past through a tight two into one right hand turn (UK) past me and I was able to give room without looking around first. The benefit of loud pipes may be marginal but (if I hear them) it does give an additional queue there is a bike about. I find that useful to give notice when the bike is filtering through slow traffic on the highway. Much less useful than keeping clear anyway to allow filtering and frequent use of my wing mirrors. Thanks for the positive reasons riding a bike is good for you. Just coming up to 70 and looking at getting a mid range naked bike for the Surrey (UK) lane after a long gap between bikes. On my last bike the timing was adjusted with a lever on the bars.
Dan, You have been busy. Yea, i have noticed that its problematic even hearing emergency vehicles inside of cars now. In my opinion the auto industry is going to have to integrate the alerts into the audio system sooner than planned. Some radar detectors had it built in years ago but i have no idea where they stand now.
I prefer the aftermarket pipes (LowRider) with the quiet baffle better power and easier on the ears for cruising. Loud pipes saving lives(maybe bikers with neighbor hater pipes), not really. Thank you for sharing your backdrop. Arizona IS very beautiful.
Dan...THANK you..for keeping your videos 60fps. There are actually a few other motocycle involved channels ( cough MC Commute cough) that refuse to get with the times and stay at 24 shitty fps. I immediately click away from those channel. I don't care if occasionally the content on a particular video of yours is not interesting enough for me to keep watching . I still thumbs up ya JUST for the 60fps in respect to keeping things " smooth."
Cheers beardy more experienced biker. :P
Hey man. Those 360 camera edits are fire..keep em coming!!
WOOOOO thanks brah. It's so fun to edit
@@DanDanTheFireman i may start a channel ..but not sure where to start with editing programs, etc.. ill look more into it
my guess is loud pipes probably save many pedestrian & riders lives, if they can hear a bike coming, they're more likely to pay attention when crossing the road..
Motorcycles give you a better workout than any casual gym membership.
Your riding location reminds me so much of Lancaster California love it out there clear long roads
I've lived in so cal and Phoenix. Lancaster is the desert 🏜️ just like here
I think loud pipes used to save lives. Back before AC was standard in cars, good cruising weather meant rolling your windows down and being able to hear the road. Now it's just pure insulation in the cars to make you feel like you're in a car simulator somewhere.
Don't worry i agree with you Dan. If you need to rev your engine to "save your life" you might as well just use your horn. It's there for a reason the sound source is pointing forward.. And something else to think about a lot of times especially on cruisers, the decibels you produce are negated by the Hertz. In other words. Your pipe is a low pressurizing rumble at the lower end of human hearing range. While your horn is at the mid- high range. People can better hear things better in mid range.
Gosh...I really love this man.❤
Hey Dan! Love the videos, I don't ride personally but I've always loved motorcycles. As of late I've finally been able to afford it but living here on Long Island NY is horrible with the amount of potholes and shit roads. Honestly if I lived in a state that wasn't so compressed I'd probably ride but it's so garbage here.
I have the factory exhaust on my electra sportster and Magna. On long trips I can hold a conversation with folks when I get off without thumbing my ear lobe and yelling what did you say? ears not ringing plus I can here the engine in case something changes internally before major damage.
I have a coworker who insists that louder exhaust is better, and his favorite story is straight-piping whatever bike he had years ago, and he was riding while some buddy of his was driving down the same road.
Supposedly his buddy said something like, "I could hear you long before I could see you. Hell, I couldn't even tell where it was coming from," and he got mad when I told him, exactly the point: Even if people do pay enough attention to hear the droning exhaust, will they know where you are because of the sound? Your friend didn't.
I respectfully disagree, Dan. I live in the City and downtown the exhaust noise alerts pedestrians, cyclists, those damn eScooters and some cars. I know that for a fact as I see it everyday.
If my exhaust can make me noticeable 1% of the time, it was worth it. All i want is for them to know I am there. Of course I don’t only rely on the sound of my exhaust, I flash my high beams, honk the horn and do everything I can do be noticeable ( I dot know that sometimes that is not enough), the point is, those little things add up and you do reduce the chances of an accident, even if it is by a very small amount
Totally agree with you. It might not make a huge difference overall, but every little bit helps.
Got into an accident last year when a car pulled out in front of me and I crashed into the car and fractured my pelvis. My neighbor was complaining about how loud my exhaust was and said they were going to call the cops so I put the baffle back in and 1 week later had my accident and the guy said he didn't see me. Always wondered if the guy would've noticed me had my exhaust been as loud as before. Without a doubt I'll be riding with the baffle out this year!
I'm all for civil discourse. Thank you for the comment
Dan I believe loud pipes do not save lives but it is good to have loud pipes because they sound beautiful.
Dano channeling his inner Shadetree Surgeon a bit here 🤘
+Kevin Toole hehehehe
They do save lives, one day I was driving, about to switch lanes and I heard a sport bike but was not able to see it, so I stayed on my lane, after a bike passed flying (way over 100mph). If it wasn’t for that exhaust, he would have to do something at high speeds and short times to not get into a life or death situation
The loud pipes one is tricky. I drive and ride. If you are in the city like when I drive in London, the traffic is very slow moving and bikes are always filtering and in that situation yes you do hear the louder bikes. If you are on the open road then no you don't hear anything.
So what you're saying is emergency vehicles shouldn't have sirens anymore cause it's just noise pollution, right?
Yes, because only if this is true pipe noise would never save a life by drawing attention. Of course sirens and pipes can draw attention. And even if only 1% of cars hear it lives are saved. Besides, bicycles, pedestrians, convertibles etc.
Yeah had a rescue vehicle behind me yesterday. No telling how long they were there but pro tip if you are behind me and have sirens idc how loud they are they aren't louder than my system playing fleetwood mac and no I'm not gonna turn it down.
Loud pipes are great for lane splitting & pedestrians, I don't know how loud they are when someone's on a naked or cruiser with stock exhaust. But, a full racing exhaust system is definitely loud enough to alert other bikers that you're coming up behind them, same with pedestrians... They'll definitely look before crossing.
Can't lane split, but we get to start to lane filtering around September 2022, I think it is!
Bullshit on loud pipes. I can remember being a teen driver who regrettably didnt pay attention and was distracted but when I heard that straight piped harley ride up along side of me it immediately grabbed my attention.
Maybe it wont stop someone from brake checking you, but people next to you and behind you will know you are there. Plus rev bombing tends to be louder than a horn when you need to alert someone. Its also great at getting people moving when they are sitting on their phones at a green light.
I’d say it’s a half truth about the loud pipes, you can’t rely on it but it is an extra measure and plus I like loud pipes
1:58 just like myself, even if i have my toughts gathered in a boquet and i thinked trough every word i want to use, still mix together everything :D
I think there is some merit to the loud pipe thing but its extremely circumstantial. For the most part I agree that people wont notice.
I think they do save lives.
It's going to be a noise that people don't often hear which will grab more peoples attention than not having it. (The people that don't hear a siren shouldn't be on the road. I can hear them at least a mile away in my car.)
having a loud pip is a preference. If you want to deal with wearing earplugs all the time than go for it. Having a loud pip is not going to hurt you or anyone else which means it is nothing but good if you don't care about the people that don't want to listen to it.
New Zealand permits motorcycles to lane split, use bus lanes, and use multi occupancy lanes, we also get free parking in designated motorcycle parks, can't beat it.
Loud pipes do help. Sometimes. We need all the help we can to be seen and heard.
@@kontrol49y99 seeing and hearing are 2 different senses. If you cant hear or see stay off the road. You sound like a karen..
"they dont see me they dont hear they dont care" , make it a song mate, we would all relate :P
I will sale all my gear and get loud pipes for my motorcycle. My #1 reason to ride is the feel of the wind on my chest.
If you ride in heavy traffic often then a louder pipe won’t hurt, lots of drivers have windows down in summer, depends on your ride too, some engines have a louder note than others especially at lower rpm. If it’s very loud you end with a headache (even with plugs) and destroy your own concentration. Oem pipes crash better than carbons one though 😀
Loud pipes do make people move over when ur lane splitting thou👍
I just broke my ankle skating but I’m still trying to ride my bike, I’m ment to take 6 weeks off but I can’t bikes are so nice I forgot how much I love them
Hi Dan it has probably been asked before but what is that helmet ? It looks amazing.
I drive a semi truck. The loudes bike i hear while driving at highway speeds are not very noticable untill there right by my door. If i didnt see them in the mirror passing, they catch me by surprise. Too late if i was going to change lanes, if i didnt look.
Yesterday I stopped with my motorcycle in a yield sign, and I was hit by a distracted car driver. I will ride again once the bike is repaired cause is worth the risk, of course. Ride safe.
Whoa. Heal up brah. Bike and you
@@DanDanTheFireman Thanks I'm fine, the bike not so much, but it can be repaired.
You wanna get smart brah!😎😎😂
When’s the big group ride Dan?
I have been in my car before, in traffic, and then I feel a vibration, then hear a rumble.. And check my blind spots and sure as sh!+ there is a motorcycle there. If I was going to merge, and didn't check blind spots and they were riding some stock, super quiet goldwing.... :/. Yes there is a greater chance I would not notice them. This is why i have pipes on my bike.. Plus they sound better.. :)
You're right about the used bikes retaining their value.
In my country old-ass Suzuki PVs from the 80s and 90s sell for 1000€+ for "raped" (wheelied, dropped, modded, tuned, been owned by multiple 15-17 year olds) that barely run. The ones that have seen use, but have been well kept are about 2000€+.
And the PV is just a 50 from the factory.
@4:12 You could say that desirable vehicles depreciate less or even gain value if they are closer to showroom condition than POS.
Lawnmowers are louder than Harley's, don't hear people whining about it, though. If it wakes up a texting zombie, I'm all for it. My Harley has wrapped baffles, not completely open, but not stock.
Loud pipes don’t save lives. I wouldn’t say it’s not because they can’t hear them, but as you said when people are driving a lot of the time they are zoned out and just driving on auto pilot basically. So they’re not really using their sense of hearing. And if they do acknowledge the loud pipe, they usually won’t know where that sound is coming from so it won’t save you. I have an incredibly loud exhaust on my bike and the amount of people that have almost pulled out straight in front of me really shows me that loud pipes do not help.
I have to tell you I took the brc course and I’ve been watching your videos and I took my first long ride and I had so much more confidence because of it. Thanks dan
I agree that loud pipes saves lives is false, but in areas where there is no traffic (i.e villages) it could help. Let me elaborate further. Once I was riding on the main road of my village and my horn was broken, and suddenly theres this guy that decided to speed out of the gas station without checking for oncoming traffic ( because heck its the village after all in his mind he's prolly the only one who drives there). Having no horn available I used the only thing available at the time, the straight pipe of the exhaust and he managed to hear me, not only that he got frightened and swerved back into his lane. Just to make this clear I despise straight pipes they are noisy (the previous owner had already installed it) but having it and being broke (not being able to afford a proper exhaust) saved my bones that day. Furthermore from a physics standpoint exhausts face towards the rear of the bike so sound gets "thrown" to that direction mostly so no one can hear your exhaust in traffic anyways. Also think of loud pipes save lives again the next time someone wakes you at 3am just because he likes the sound.
I've always thought it was pedestrians lives that loud pipes saved, in urban areas, not on motorways (freeways) of course.
Love ya ❤️
I just got my first bike a week ago and wrecked it 4 days ago and spent three days in the hospital and now I can’t work for two months and have tubes coming out of me lmao
Dan 🤙🏽 on the videos.. question I’m interested in just recorded some of my rides.. who makes the camera on your handle bars.. $$$ . Thanks Brother..
Insta 360 One X brah. Get the GoPro Hero 7 Black if you want that smoothness. Much easier to make.
Just started riding, my bike is loud. But I realized that I play my stereo in my car too loud to hear a lot of stuff. If I’m doing it, how many others are? Of course my head is always on a swivel when I’m driving a car.
Hi Dan, Thanks for posting all these educational videos , very much appreciate that!
However, I have to disagree with you on this one! Loud pipes do save lives, especially if you are in California and do lane splitting! Thanks
I noticed on some of your videos you have quite the beard. Back when I was a firefighter beards were a no no due to the fact that it can compromise the seal of the SCBA. Of course this was back before fiberglass and carbon fiber tanks existed. I had to wear the good ole Scott pack with steel tanks. Just curious about the beard. Thanks

Yes loud pipes save lives I live in the state that has the most pedestrian hit or killed in the nation I live in Florida when pedestrians here the pipes that backup an do not cross the street when they hear it. They seem to not be able read when they are supposed to cross in the crosswalk
Link to buy the camera and mount on your bar??
Hey what kinda gloves are you wearing in this video?
Did your friend have a Low Rider S? My brother got a 2017 and it's been staying about the same value or increasing.
I'd rather spend the money on courses and invest in myself than on loud pipes for my bike. Does that make sense?
What camera are you filming yourself with?
Motorcycles are fun. ...should be part of the list! As a retired LEO, just don't make my brothers and sisters tell a family member that recklessness was the cause!
Loud pipes annoy wives
Tailgaters back off. People keep their distance behind you. Cars are not insulated enough to make the sound mute, people can't ignore your presence. Cutting around cars or lane filtering, people give you space or stop that sudden need to move over without checking mirrors. Most people can hear you coming, let's not use the highway/freeway as an example that's as silly as saying tail lights don't work because people can't see it as you approach them. We get it. Did I mention pedestrians. People do not just walk in front of you. Even dogs leave you alone. I've seen people start reversing for X reason in traffic, parking lot, etc, a motorcycle horn is not as effective as a "Vroom Vroom". This is all my anecdotal evidence. From my sportbike to my cruiser. The cruiser makes me feel this protection sound bubble. Never thought about it until I started hearing "loud pipes save lives" then I connected the dots.
Totally agree with you on your loud pipes stance!
I would disagree with you I’m a new rider and as a driver I would more be aware of a loud bike that a quiet bike which would make me pay more attention of my surroundings
except nowadays, most HOV lanes where i live have been converted into toll roads.
Dan Dan gotta move to decaf
My 1972 FLH lived in my laundry room for 19 years until we moved in 2008 to a house with a garage. I bought my 72 for $1000.00 and put about that in it in 89. I turned down $$9.000 for it lately. I was a cop and we had a guy hit two cruisers and a fire truck with all our emergency lights on at night and the guy was sober so never think the other guy sees you
Hi Dan about noisey exhaust like other comments I think they do make a difference, but what about electric bikes that have no noise at all !!
The question isnt how dangerous is it to ride a motorcycle. Its how dangerous is it to crash on a motorcycle.
In my country there are so many people with loud motorbike. It's painful. My bike, which I'm about to licence, had an aftermarket exhaust, I'm putting the stock exhaust back on. Fairly sure because I would need it to licence my bike. But why? When a lot would go back and replace the stock with aftermarket again. WHYYYY! You ride on the streets, big deal you make an extra 8 Horsepower! Who cares? Seriously. All the previous knee of my bike did was cost me, the next owner, money to right the wrongs. I wish the first thing new bike owners didn't do was replace stock exhausts.
yes.
A large percentage of people confuse being heard with driving safely. Hey, look! I have these loud pipes! Everyone can hear me so I can think less and drive like an ass! If loud pipe saved lives, they would be standard equipment on all vehicles! How nice is that?
I love your helmet
I just subscribed 😏
Is that a ram mount 👀😂
I don’t believe loud pipes save lives because some luxury cars have sound cancelling inside and the usual idiots I see not paying attention are those people. My car doesn’t have that feature but I don’t even hear a motorcycle passing by when moving right until they are next to me. The same applies to sirens. I don’t hear it until I’m 50 feet near the emergency vehicles. I assure you it’s not my hearing but that car manufacturers have improved this technology of cancelling out road noise which in my opinion is not a good idea but that’s what consumers want and that’s what manufacturers give the average consumer
The loud pipe issue is the biggest reason I dont care for HD (also WAAAAAAY overpriced in my opinion). Dont get me wrong, they are some sexy ass bikes. But the overly loud pipes steer me away. I already have hearing loss due to the military. I would like to keep tbe rest of my hearing. And no, in general loud pipes dont save lives. There me be that 0.1% chance they do. You are better off wearing decent full gear and being a competent, safe, and smart rider.
Do you ever ride in Cochise county?
i bought a used bike and when i have it on the stands i noticed the front wheel brake is barely touching the rotor as i spin the wheel freely. I feel like thats not normal, does any one know whats wrong with it?
You need new brake pads stupid
Cars do pay attention to loud pipes. I don't like them but they do make a lot of box drivers pay attention
