    I'm 48 years old. I've had my motorcycle endorsement since I was 22. I've laid a bike down 1 time in all those years on the street. I ride safe, I stay safe, I assume all other vehicles do not see me.

      I'm 59 with the same story as you. I was 16 when I dropped my bike. I could see my shin bone that had to be packed every day. Pain pain pain. Lessons in life aren't free. I too assume all other vehicles can't see. Stay safe brother.

      I'm 67, had my first ride (Honda CB 350 Scrambler) in FL when I was 17. I've had two accidents, one was caused by gravel I didn't see on a back road curve, also at 17, the next was on a 400 Kawasaki in NYC, when at 22, I got crushed by a drunk in a car who hit me and a parked car doing about 45 at night. Was NO place to hide. Now riding a Buell Blast, fun for around town and on the local twisties.

      Precisely. We all do know it's a fact that bikes are inherently more dangerous, than say, driving a SUV. I think part of the thrill of riding is knowing that, and still loving every minute you're on it. The freedom, the thrill, the danger - letting the 'rebel' in us come out is a great feeling.

    Excellent video. You absolutely nailed it right here - 3:28 Attitude is 90% of the ability to stay alive as a motorcyclist, and a little common courtesy to other users of the road doesn't hurt either. Ride like everybody's out to kill you as some of them actually are. I put MOST of the blame for much of the public's dislike of motorcyclists directly on the shoulders of motorcyclists who drive like maniacs in traffic!
    I purchased my first motorcycle from a Doctor who gave me some excellent tips that have served me well through over 35 years of riding without any serious incident. I've ridden everything from 350cc Standards to larger standard/sporty, to a couple cruisers, to an 1800cc Goldwing (mostly two up with my wife), to a retro classic CB1100EX, and most recently back to a vintage 750cc Nighthawk. I'm now 71 years old and just recently sold our Goldwing to a Surgeon. 'Twas a great bike which my wife absolutely loved BUT muscling over a 1,000 pounds around was beginning to sap some of my confidence so I decided to let it go. My CB1100 is a dream bike (for me) and the 750 Nighthawk which I purchased this summer is a blast from the past. I can't believe my luck in finding this pristine 28 year old machine.

      Ah yes. The short term memory. I am old enough to not be bold except for one run to the “ton” each year. 49 years of riding has been good to me and I pray now for a few more. My signature picture kinda says where my head is at these days.

    • @HDMotorProduction
      @HDMotorProduction Před 4 lety

      easyrider4x everyday I count how many work days I have left for the week to end. Note after the work-week-ends I stop riding... so it’s quiet the opposite lol. But when the week starts, on the very first day I look at the average temps which I would have known the past week. Just to reassure myself what I have to deal with lol. I call this “The Ring”. If the week is going to b cold like right now, I would already b aware of it prior to the last one that ends. Every Sunday is the time I do prepared mechanical procedures. Like change my oil before time just because the weather is going to b colder. N while it’s in my first work day, I dress for the weather with electric thermal gears. The only thing I pay attention to every morning is how the bikes starts. Because I can’t b fixing them during the week, it’s always on a Sunday, even if it’s a small battery problem. If it can’t run, I benched it n take another. Mind u I always have two. I’ve been doing this for so long that my days r irrelevant. My time doesn’t matter. All that matter is each morning they start.

    • @HDMotorProduction
      @HDMotorProduction Před 4 lety

      easyrider4x n while I’m riding u would think I’m enjoying I’m not. On certain curves n lane splitting there r these cars that always likes to bypass riders... sometimes in my head it’s always one person because there are certain days they don’t do it, I pay close attention to who’s behind me n how fast I’m going. Like yesterday this guy literally put a right signal like he’s turning right while he’s accelerating on my ass n I was doing 75 MPH. He really wanted to kill me, all it takes for me to avoid this is being calm as I’m normally am and at the very last minutes when he almost hit me I tilt right and press my brake slightly. It was only me n him at that speed n everyone else was doing 65 the highest.

    • @photon2724
      @photon2724 Před 4 lety

      @gemini232003 mate. You're delusional. Seatbelts have never caused death. Even if you are the safest driver/rider in the world, a drunk 18 year old adrenaline junkie can end your life while you might be stopped on a red light. smoking back than was considered safe just before people started dying from it. Its the same with the seatbelt, statistics shows from accidents that seatbelts are literal lifesavers. Its you're choice i guess. If you wanna fly outta your car then go ahead, but just think of the pain your family will go through next you decide not to wear one.

    • @photon2724
      @photon2724 Před 4 lety

      @gemini232003 Instant Death can happen under a second of the inital crash, if you dont beleive me, here's a little maths, if car crashes at 100kmph, that's 27 meters per second, a steering wheel is 1 meter away(being generous), YOU HAVE 0.27 SECONDS TO GET OUT THE WAY! No human is capable of moving out the way that fast... I think for myself through simple physics. Its Newtons first law of physics, when the cars haults from the crash, YOU will be flung out at a 100kmph or whatever speed you were travelling at. A seatbelt prevents that... You say, people dont think for themselves, trust me people do think. You on the other hand should think less for yourself, you're mind has become delutional from all the concussions you've got from not wearing a seatbelt.

    • @photon2724
      @photon2724 Před 4 lety

      @gemini232003 i would prefer to listen to scientists who have spent years experimenting on the most safest way to stay alive rather than leaving it to my reflexes. Flying out the windscreen is 100% certainty of death, being stuck in a flaming car still gives you a chance to survive. Im not saying seatbelts are 100% garunteed to keep you alive, but they far outweigh the dangers without them.

    One thing I like about my WR250R dual sport is that even though it can handle a bit of everything, you also FEEL everything! Plus it’s light and maneuverable which makes it super fun at slower speeds.
    But one thing that scares me about larger displacement bikes is that you can get very comfortable going very fast. With the windscreen, heavier weight, lower center of gravity, and body positioning, you can very quickly forget just how much danger you’re truly in.
    On my small displacement dual sport, I will feel lateral shifts in the wind and general wind drag much more prominently. I really have to really rev it up to take off quickly too, which reminds me how fast even just 40mph is.
    It might be more fatiguing at faster speeds, but it also keeps me way more in tune to what’s going on.

  • @jonnyspeed

    46 yrs old. Got my endorsement at 21. Owned 7 bikes from Supersport to naked to sport touring to standard UJM. Never been down. Had some close calls. If you look into the data you quickly realize that if you do two simple things you greatly improve your odds of survival- 1. Don't drink. 2. Wear your gear. If you also add a dash of self control you won't statistically be that much worse off than someone in a car. Having said all that, I prefer to drive convertible sports cars over riding these days. Safer to get that wind in the hair feeling in a car and I enjoy driving as much if not more than riding.

    Oh, and the reason Harleys are more dangerous than others, IMHO, is because a large number of them are written by people without helmets. And even the ones who were wearing helmets, a lot of the times, are going to bike nights at bars. The quickest way to get killed on a motorcycle, is to add alcohol. Just my two cents.

  • @quikboarder93
    @quikboarder93 Před 4 lety +1

    Another thing to note on speed... drivers of cars judge where you’re going to be and when based on the flow of traffic.
    For example, if cars are moving from point A to point B in about 10 seconds, that’s more than enough time to pull out and speed up. But if you’re an outlier and you moved from point A to point B in 3-4 seconds because you were speeding, then if they pull out in front of you, that’s 100% your fault.
    Flow with the speed of traffic so that you remain predictable!

Full disclosure, neither of my bikes are full on cafe, but they have a cafe-ish vibe. (I have 2017 Moto Guzzi V7iii Special and a slightly modified 1974 Honda CB750.) I like the vintage bikes and retro/modern classics for the most part. I tend to get along with anyone who rides a bike, no matter what style it is. I've never actually been on a sports bike. I just wish people would pay attention. But I gotta admit, I was driving down a 4 lane busy street the other day in my car and I didn't even see or hear this quiet sport bike cruising in my blind spot but that's why I always check around me before turning or changing lanes and always give riders some room because that's what I want when I'm on my bike.

    I now ride a 650 KLR that I've dropped a couple times in the dirt. Muddy ruts are my enemy on such a heavy Enduro. BUTTTTT I now have a dead man's donor knee from a first gear crash. While leaving my driveway the neighbors dog took off after me. I tried to kick him outa the way with my left foot extended and knee was locked. When my foot hit the pavement the entire knee exploded and drove this leg 2.5 inches shorter. After a couple of months in hospital and physical rehab and about 6 month on a walker and wheelchair I'm back riding again.
    I can't put into words how the first time back on it felt. It wasn't a scared feeling , but it was a neck tingly feeling nine the less.

    We had a man who was picnicking with his family in our state park a few years ago. It was a nice day, no serious wind or anyting, and all of a sudden a tree branch fell and killed him. The park people estimated that it had taken about 75 years for the termites to chew through that branch. 75 years of time where it could have fallen and not hurt anyone... and then, all of a sudden, out of nowhere it drops and kills the man. Life isn't safe, and no one gets out alive. You might as well enjoy the ride.

I have been riding for 22 years and have had three accidents where all of them was from vehicles on the road. Always be vigilant when riding as vehicles never see you coming. My father always gave me this advice, the bike will always be your boss and you are not the boss of the bike. Respect the bike.

Splint second decisions can be death or life. Injury is often unavoidable. You just pick the most probably best outcome. I could have either t-boned or try and dodge. In dodging, I got clipped. Went flying 25 feet. Then was flown to a trauma unit. Now I got metal implants in arms and legs. Will I still ride? Yes! I have ridden them since i was a kid. But study statistics in order Not to become one ( for your state too!). And try not to use them as your only or primarily mode of transport
