The comments on this video have been fascinating. So, I'm going to respond to most of the negative ones here, and pin it for all to see.
First off, we actually had our reaction to this song reviewed by a mental health professional with 25 years of experience with issues highlighted. That professional found no fault in our response.
I think many watched the video, but didn't pay attention to the lyrics. In the lyrics, Stapleton repeatedly invites more emotional pain caused by a person he loves. He clearly thinks his suffering, caused by someone he loves, is noble and in fact proves his love even more.
That so many here subscribe to this as a good approach shows how unhealthy so many of us are. There is zero nobility in allowing others to repeatedly cause you emotional damage. Setting healthy boundaries does not mean you do not love that person, no matter what that person (or anyone else) will say in reaction to hitting those boundaries.
Even one of the most idiotic lyricists in rock music get this. Said ironically:
"The more you suffer, the more it shows you really care. Right?" - Offspring.
The Offspring really summarized this whole concept in their song "Self Esteem." Maybe some country fans should give it a listen for an absurd take on the same concept. - Keith

I have lived the lyrics to this song, 100%. Not the video version. No Mental Health professionals were there to help us. He would fling words and hurtful questions. He wouldn't remember afterwards. It wasn't his fault, not the disorder, not the fact that Drs ignored us. There was no happy ending to my story, because when chips fell mental health professionals inside of the only thing to do was to sit him in a nursing home with inadequate care at 60 years of age. Sometimes we shared together we're absolutely wonderful, the best of both of our lives. Those episodes of mental anguish and what would be called abuse if he had any control over the situation were fleeting, as the lyrics to the song said I was very much able to handle them, without feeling pain over the words. You don't abandon someone for something they can't control. I myself didn't need vows to know that. But in the song we are talking about a married couple, we are talking about a family, we are talking about a promise.

Oh I absolutely agree that boundaries are important in this scenario. Also important to understand that some things are out of our control and we can't save people , we don't have the medical or psychological intelligence for that. What we can do is love them, support them in recovery or treatment.
All to often the VA, medical community, the insurance companies etc, leave people with no options for that treatment or recovery. If someone is struggling I am going to make sure they know they are loved. From PTSD to schizophrenia help is needed, and I will do my best to offer what I can

Lol Dude you’re divorced/ not married No Kids I’m guessing… you can consult mental professionals all day long if that helps you justify your reaction. For me, Stapleton is NOT saying it’s noble to “take abuse” as you put it… he’s saying it sucks… really bad.. but you know the person inflicting it isn’t doing it intentionally and likely even feels worse when they realize they are hurting you. It’s an ILLNESS, any pain inflicted isn’t intentional, and that, for most of us who love someone, cause us to say “hey, I love you, let me help.. EVEN IF helping means you have to dump your sh*t on me sometimes” it’s called EMPATHY… it’s in the dictionary.
Tried hanging on to my subscription to your channel, but the there’s been so many times the smugness has come through, that this one was last the last time. Unsubscribing .. good luck.

That's not what the lyrics say. The lyrics say "abuse me" (paraphrased from "fire away"). The lyrics romanticize staying there and taking the attacks. And trust me, not all abuse is physical. And saying, "fire away, hit me with all your crap" is quite literally requesting abuse.

The idea that we can love someone enough to save them from themselves, save them from their demons, has been so romanticized so much in movies and television shows, people refuse to accept that someone they love needs professional help with mental health issues.

I'm not bipolar but i suffer from depression, a different mental issue, but still one! yes, i am medicated, but there are days that the depression wins over the medication and i go back to my depressive days! i had to tell my husband what i needed from him when i have these 'episodes'. he SUPPORTS me and still loves me during that time!

To be fair to the story, it may be that she was undergoing professional help as well.
The events could take place over a lengthy period.
I took it that he was telling her that she was worth the struggle and that he would support her through it all.
In the end, even with professional help and the person doing what they can sometimes the inner demon wins.
I do agree with your point as well. There is a difference between loving someone with a mental illness and supporting them in the fight and allowing them to consume you as well.
It's a situation I thankfully don't have any experience in on either side of the coin.

Unfortunately the Manic Depression states of Bipolar are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to treat for many and this song is highlighting how tragic it is for both them and us. It took eight years for a friend of mine to land a meditation that somewhat works. Before that they almost lost their life twice in a manic state despite being in treatment and revolving meds.

My husband I have been together 30 years. I was 18, he was 23. I was a kid. He was there when I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. I’ve seen the same therapist for 24 years. I DID and still DO get help. Antidepressants and meds for the anxiety. We’ve raised two adult children and are raising our daughter we adopted through the foster system. He’s always been supportive and when I hit a depressive episode or panic attack he’s there telling me to fire away, lean on him, he’s there to help me through it. He isn’t “taking my abuse”, he is loving me. I’ve never attempted suicide, but I’m not bipolar, which is much harder to treat. I’m a nurse and most people with bipolar stop taking their meds when they are in the manic phase then when they hit the low phase they are so low they end their life. Mental illness isn’t something people ask for. The illness isn’t the problem. Not treating is the problem.
Watch the making of Fire Away video, Chris explains he only agreed to it because he wanted to put a message out about mental illness and the havoc it can cause. The website is changedirection.org.
I REFUSE to suffer from depression. I battle it. I fight it everyday. I don’t win every battle but I sure as hell will win the war. I’m a rock fan and when I met Ben of Breaking Benjamin we discussed depression and how his music pulls me out of it. He battles depression too, and when we talked we talked about what helps and what doesn’t. So I guess that’s my take on it; fight it. Don’t let it win.

Fellas, this one tore me up but not why you’d think. Wife and I would regularly go to our mutual best friends’ most weekends in the summer due to their pool. More often than not Stapleton would be playing in the background while we floated around, grilled out and talked about life with many an inappropriate joke and such. This was just the most calming and comfortable vibe you could imagine sharing with friends. When I say friends, I don’t keep many due to the true value of true friends. Similar to what y’all project. Anyway in our world my buddy was the “bourbon” guy and I was the beer guy. He introduced me to ryes, Blantons, Sazerac, etc to name a few. For the past decade we have been like brothers. We knew everything about one another and accepted without question. Late this past year he passed away unexpectedly. While sipping Sazerac and cooking this came up next on my CZcams feed. Couldn’t pull myself to stop it. I just lost it, sipped again and celebrated him. This hit home. Thank you fellas for helping this ole fella heal a little bit. 🥃

I guess different people perceive the song different ways and that's fine we are all allowed to have our own opinions on things. That being said I got it as him trying his best to help her through her mental illness and just not really understanding how to do it. Not that there was any abuse at all . And if there was it was her to him during an episode that unfortunately she really couldn't control. It's a sad situation and the video was just trying to bring awareness to it and that's why the number at the end. There is 3 sides to a coin. Most will be either be heads or tails. Never really paying attention to the middle where there the truth is. I grew up around abuse. I grew up with a manic bi polar mother. If it was not for my stepdad staying I would have not known what was normal and what wasn't. I would still be on heads or tails. So yes it's a good song. What I take away from this song is that this woman has a mental illness, bi polar possibly, and everything going for her. Buying a new home, starting a new life with a man that loves her; all of her; in spite of the illness. But even that; all of that, was not enough to save her. Mental Illness NEEDS to be addressed and it needs professional treatment. You can't shove it in a closet or cabinet; you can't paint over it. I needs to be treated by a professional. This guy did everything he could possibly do, and he still could not save her from herself. But with treatment, therapy, possibly medication; with those things the outcome could very well have been different! We NEED to STOP ignoring the signs and stop acting like Mental Illness is a big secret or that it doesn't exist. It needs to be out in the open, openly discussed and not TABOO! And this was an amazing way to bring awareness to that very thing! That's just my take.

Mental illness has been in my family for generations. The mental health system is broken. You can have someone committed & put on meds, but then they stop taking their meds when they get released & said person is a grown adult & you can't make them take their meds. Not enough hospital beds & insurance does not want to pay psychiatrist anymore so said patient sees a therapist who reports to the psychiatrist. My parents started taking me to a psychiatrist when I was 14. He spent an hour with me for each appointment. Now days my oldest son who has been diagnosed as schizophrenic had to see therapists several times before he could even get in to see a psychiatrist. He won't take his meds & doesn't believe he needs them. My biological father & biological grandmother (who did not raise me) both had mental illness. My biological father shot himself in the head. The mental health system is totally broken.

This video presents a rather accurate depiction of bipolar 2 condition. I think the use of the word abuse is off putting because it has the connotation of malevolence, which is rarely the case with bipolarism. There is also a fine line between support and codependency; the latter meaning you allow the person's mental illness drag you down with them. Regardless in real life the situations are not as cut and dry as depicted in any 3 minute video. So while Keith can be off putting at times he right, you can't allow someone with mental health issues to destroy your life along with their's because then you are no help to anyone.

She is Bipolar and most of what you called abuse was him trying to keep her from ending her life and her fighting him about it. That happened during her extreme lows. However to say he should of gotten out when you don't know if she had meds that weren't working etc is a bit harsh. This is have to say is one where you miss the mark completely on.

Did you know that many people who have unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide say, "I didn't want to die. I just wanted the pain to stop." It seems to me that the lyrics are saying, I know this is part of your disease, not something personal aimed at me. It is an unconditional love song to a woman who is clearly suffering from manic depression. If she had brain cancer instead & the pain of her suffering was tearing him apart would you tell him to walk away? Did you see the message at the end of the video? The link to a site to get help? I've watched reactions from 2 other people who do or have worked in the mental health field. Neither of them suggested abandonment. Its the fact that you guys got this wrong, and then doubled down with the ridiculous pinned comment for me.
The point of the song isnt that he was saying to abuse him. Its literally meant to say that he's there to fight the battle of depression with her, he isnt going anywhere.
The fact that a mental health professional of 25 years didn't understand that is frightening, honestly. The website at the end of the video is there intentionally because Chris wanted to do this video to bring awareness to depression and bipolar depression.

I was upset when I watched your initial reaction. I battle depression and neither my husband nor I believe I abuse him. I fight it, I treat it, I don’t let it win. It may knock me down but dammit I get back up! I have 23 years as a RN/mental health. Watched this review with one of our LCPC’s. His take was that this guy was a cop and perhaps had a hero complex, thought he could save her. We can’t save all of them. Hell, we’re lucky to save a few. Meds for bi polar disorder have some pretty brutal, lifelong side effects so patients don’t take them and they and their loved ones live the cycle of this video, often self medicating with street drugs, alcohol or both. The psychologist I spoke with said he doesn’t consider it abuse on her part but the misguided notion on her husband’s part that he could “love” it out of her. I battle depression but thank God it’s not at this level.

Most people with severe bipolar stop taking their meds when they are manic, feeling “better.” Then when the depressive episode hits they self medicate or end it all leaving pain and misery in their wake. I fight depression and anxiety and it’s a series of battles. I tell patients it’s ok not to win every battle. Sometimes it knocks you on your ass and that’s ok as long as you don’t unpack and live there. Get up. Fight. I turn to God and metal music when I’m down so when my husband sees me reading my Bible while banging my head he knows I’m fighting.
