Y’all need to see the live version of the song. The person singing harmony is his wife, Morgane. He has written many songs for lots of people. Morgane Convinced Chris to go out on his own and sing his songs. Chris has stage fright and his wife gets up and things with him, which helps him. She is a good singer in her own right.

I started working in bars in the late 80s. Family was in the music business before this. To say I have heard hundreds of covers of this song is an understatement.
It's flat out a good song. Even when done poorly.
Chris S's version flat out owns this song. It never gets old.

"Tennessee Whiskey" is a country song written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. It was originally recorded by American country music artist David Allan Coe for his album of the same name Tennessee Whiskey, whose version peaked at number 77 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1981.[1] George Jones' 1983 version of the song was included on his album Shine On, and reached number 2 on the Hot Country Singles chart.

@@mikebeasley6447 I hate when people make this comparison. You're really talking about apples and oranges here. Chris's version is bluesy and shows off his vocal range, where as George Jones gives it a more gentler and understated vibe. I appreciate them both for what they are. I've never listened to Coe's version much, so I can't really comment on it.

  • @Melly01
    @Melly01 Před 2 lety +20

He defies genre, honestly, because he has a ton of influences, but he's officially classified as country. It just depends on which song you hit if it's straight up country or not. So happy you did this one! Even if you don't react to it, check out the version live from Austin City Limits, that's his wife on harmony. He's even better live! (Just saw him in concert last week - FANTASTIC!) Next: "I Was Wrong," also live from Austin City Limits, there's a wicked guitar solo at the end that's not on the studio version. And his cover of Metallica's, "Nothing Else Matters," from Blacklist is absolute 🔥🔥🔥! (Sort of Outlaw Country?) If you want Southern Rock Country, try, "Arkansas." That wouldn't be out of place in Lynyrd Skynyrd's catalog. "Devil Always Made Me Think Twice" (upbeat) and "Whiskey and You" (slow and introspective)are both country as it gets.

In my personal opinion, Chris Stapleton has skyrocketed this song. Chris has written most of his songs and they are all a one of a kind. I think when he sings a song he relates to that song in a way that no other can. It says if he’s lived each of the songs that he sings. He has a gift of sounding like he can relate to each song.

The voice was that of Chris Stapleton and the hot licks on the guitar were also done by Chris. David Allen Coe (You Never Even Called Me by My Name) was the first to record this back in 1981 then George Jones recorded it in 1983 and it went to number 2 on the country charts. However, it took the bluesy country sound of Chris Stapleton to launch this song into the stratosphere.
THE Tennessee Whiskey is Jack Daniels which is made in a little town between Nashville and Chattanooga called Lynchburg, Tennessee. It has been made there since 1866 and the town pretty much owes its existence to Jack.
Fun Fact: Though Jack Daniels has been distilled in Lynchburg for 150 years, Lynchburg is in a dry county so if you want to actually have a glass of Jack you have to leave the county and go somewhere else.

He has several straight country songs. This one just became his big hit. This was one he used to warm up to. The fans loved it so much, he decided to include it on his debut solo album. The tune is “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Etta James. Someone already mentioned he didn’t write this one and it has been recorded by some of the country OGs.
He doesn’t have a bad song. They may not all be country, but they’re damn good. He has a rock album from when he was in the Jompson Brothers band and some killer bluegrass ones from his time with The Steeldrivers.

Country is stories..It has always had some blues, some rock, some gospel, some western, some jazz etc...incorporated into the sound...Its a variety of types of music, that represents this country and the sounds from different regions..Southern Country is different than western country so to speak..However it's about the story and truth in the story...

Chris Stapleton has written at least six #1 hits for other artists. He's written over 30 songs that have charted for others. The background singer in this one and his normal vocal collaborator is his wife Morgane (who on the live version of this was very very pregnant with one of their five children). Morgane co-wrote the Carrie Underwood song "Don't Forget to Remember Me" so she's no slouch either as either a singer or a song writer. There is a video from the CMA's (I think, may be AMA's) with Chris and Justin Timberlake (and Morgane) doing two songs live, Tennessee Whiskey is the first, the second is Justin's song "I Can't Drink You Away". React, don't react, just watch it. You'll understand. I don't think I've heard a bad Chris Stapleton song or performance.

"Country" means our Country..Its real music from USA and it incorporates all genres and is called Country Rock, Country Blues, Country Folk, Country Blue Grass, Country Gospels, Country Pop etc.. Thats country...The songs must have a story, some acoustics or blend of traditional instruments along with the electrics...
Yes it's Blues, it's Country Blues, and the blues have always been a part of Country music..

Guys, what your learning is that country kids were raised hearing classic country like Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash out in the garage while dad was turning wrenches on his old hot rod and pop, Motown and blues in the car with mom while she was going to the store or running us to ball games. Then we were growing up in the era of 70s and 80s classic rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd and AC/DC. These are the types of music that shaped country music of today.

Country is actually a form of the Blues and which is different type of music behind the journey it's a story just like in blues I think one of the reasons the music of the 60s and 70s especially the classic rock is the most downloaded music daily for Mega years is because it told such awesome stories

One song “Whiskey Myers-broken window serenade” these guys are easy Texas boys that play a lot of southern rock and a lot of country, they are similar to skynyrd to me this song is an awesome song. The other is “Cody Jinks-all it cost me was everything” lots of steel guitar in this one, Cody is from Denton Texas and actually had a metal band before he got into the independent Texas country scene but while playing the Texas red dirt scene he just started a new natal band called Caned by Nod.
