    I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user & the stares, rude comments and straight harassment for standing or walking 3 steps? It’s so bad it makes me not want to walk or stand even when I can.
    Being told I’m “faking it”, “should be ashamed of myself” etc. is so maddening. And what advantage do I get by faking that I need this multi-thousand dollar wheelchair? So I can get harassed in public? Argh!!

    If you need to move a wheelchair user. Here’s a step by step guide.
    Step one: you’ve encountered someone in a wheelchair but you need to get past them
    Step two: Get their attention a simple “excuse me”
    Step three: watch as they politely move a bit
    Step four: SAY THANKYOU
    step five: go past or get what you needed
    Step six: Be on with your day Politely.

    • @briannahudson6329
      @briannahudson6329 Před 10 měsíci +134

      Pat on the head, touch our legs to see if we can feel it, grab our sholders, try to lift our feet with theirs to see if we have control of our legs yep. These are the ones that I have personally experienced because if you can feel your legs you dont need a wheelchair, you are faking it or you are just lazy. I have to use a wheelchair a little under half the time and a walker the rest(sometimes im lucky and for really short walks like into the gas station for a soda during a slow time where i wont have to stand for more than 3-4 minutes I can use a quad cane those are good days) it depends on how my body is that day, if I've recently had a surgery, how long my outing is, what the weather is like and a few other things or a combination of those as to whether I can manage on my feet or need my chair at that time. And being pushed out of the way, having random people put things on my lap or wheelchair handles because im sitting so whats the problem. One time at the mall someone put their bags 3 of them on my handle and I didnt notice and left that store to go to another one I got chased down and accused of stealing by a random stranger becuase they chose to use MY mobility aid as a rack to hang their stuff on.

As one myself, I’ve been told by multiple people that I was faking my chronic illnesses and at one point I had an older man follow me out of a store and ‘confront’ me and try to take my electric wheelchair. We actually ended becoming friends because we're both disabled and she heard someone say that about something I did because of my disability, and we just ended up ranting about ableists for hours haha.

      Id be a lil surprised seeing a wheel chair but i dont gape. I do politely ask if they need help, they say no and i go on abt my day.
      If i saw someone stand up i might stare a lil longer and then remember oh right some people can still walk and then again shrug and go abt my day.
      For me tho its most lilely my adhd or autism thatd make me stare wayyyy longer wanting to see if i can figure out wheelchair functions compared to ones ive seen online and then also just in aw of how cool any particular chair might look. (Some are rlly cool! XD) if im caught on tht id just be embarassed and stutter through the fact i think their wheelchairs cool.
      Or for her wondering for a minute abt her shoe ...stilt... prosthetic? Tho if it eas that id prolly catch myself after a sec and hope they didnt see me and walk off embarassed and anxious
      And lastly i just tend to stare at anything i find cool, so if they had any cool hair or shirt or something id be starry eyed looking. But for those im most likely to come up and say tht i find said hair or shirt or etc rlly cool xD or just walk away thinking "wow tht guys cool!" (Oh and maybe their dog. Tho i wouldnt come up to bother the dog id prolly stare from far away cooing in my head abt how absolutely CUTE they are. But not wanting to get closer worried abt messing with them or them thinking i want to distract the dog rather then just asking what breed is it or so)
      Ahahaha just a small note of me and why i might stare or something.
      The people who GRAB wheelchairs and push or move or climb over or jump them is ASTOUNDUNG unless ur in a spot where thats expected (like ya knw how u climb over people in stadiums or bus/airplane sometimes) thats just unacceptable (lemongrab style). And even then wheelchair users usually have their own space for tht thing if their in the chair so still no reason for it.
      Just SMH man. Dont jump over people pr grab them without permission. Omg

To lighten the mood, a funny one: I practice at a play center for disabled people (there's mostly kids there), and I didn't know how to roll the wheelchair (that kid has cerebral palsy and can't roll himself), it just felt so hard for some reason lmao, and I accidentally bumped his wheel into the door, thankfully lightly, and we laughed about it 😂. Sorry, not sorry. I will continue to crouch down and speak at eye level regardless if you're a child, short person, or wheelchair user. This will be done for my own comfort, not yours. I want to hear you accurately and make sure I'm giving you my full attention, especially when it's important.
    Since I lose focus easily, this method saves us time because I don't process what people are saying. If I'm just nodding and not asking questions or looking at you, chances are I'm merely giving the polite motions to placate you and waiting to move on (shorter wait span than an argument about me not caring about the topic you're interested in).
    All the rest, spot on. Just remember that even though it looks like I'm staring, I'm trying to solve my problem without causing you more problems while I contemplate if the item I'm looking for is in your vacinity.

But this mom needed to get around her I guess, so she literally, like, grips the top of her head like she's a fucking, I don't even know. Like she's a table top? And then slides her wheelchair forward BY THE TOP OF HER HEAD. While saying some bullshit like "Sorry, just need to get around you real quick." Like Bitch?! You are touching her head! She didn't even just be disrespectful by grabbing her wheelchair and moving her that way, she just grabbed the top of her head to push her forward. It was one of those moments where everyone's eyes just widen but you don't know what to say because it's just so crazy.

    About 10 years ago when I started a new retail job, a big part of our onboarding training was centered around serving people with various kinds of disabilities-- I was SO impressed. While I don't remember the exact training, I DO recall it discussed never assuming that people with disabilities or mobility aids needed help-- how to politely ask if necessary, and of course how to remain respectful and assure every person their individual agency. My mom works in equity, so pretty much all stuff I knew... but I was so happy that this huge corporation was making sure EVERY employee had that education. ❤

    I went to ren fair this year in a wheelchair (which was difficult as is cause the ground was all gravel and dirt) and many of the booth owners audibly sighed and rolled their eyes when they saw me entering their booth, and there were already booths I couldn't get into cause there was only stairs as an entrance, or the Isles were too close together so then when I could actually get in a booth that I was excited about and the owner was visibly upset about my existence? It was really frustrating. But there were some super understanding and accommodating people, who were helpful but not in a patronizing way, and they made it worth it

    • @Lazy_Fish_Keeper
      @Lazy_Fish_Keeper Před 8 měsíci +13

      Hard relate!
      The NM Ren Faire is super accessible, and the board has educated vendors (and chosen not to include vendors who didn't improve).
      The Raleigh, NC SCA gathering is also really accessible.
      Unfortunately, shoppers at the Raleigh Costco have the worst depth perception of shoppers I have ever encountered. One man rolled his shopping cart into my service dog and proceeded to justify his behavior because he "thought he could fit"😒
      My kid demonstrated they actually pay attention at my workshops, and taught an impromptu consent lesson that left the adult speechless and beet red.
      I was so proud.

      Valid points on both sides. Yes, some folks are entitled and do overly occupy space when it's not necessary. Even as a handicapped person myself, I find that frustrating. In regards to the incident I mentioned, I would've much preferred that the guy politely asked me to move, as lezaandstuff mentioned, as opposed to being rudely and forcefully pulled away from the shelf, causing a big bag of bagels to go flying all the way across the isle.

    Yes! My mom (she has passed now) had a wheelchair and she used it, we were doing a tour for the Niagara Falls and my mom got off of the wheelchair everytime she got on the bus, so my mom was behind a pregnant lady and the woman was asking the bus driver if she could have the wheelchair, something like “hey can I use the wheelchair? I’m pregnant and I think I deserve it more then *her*”
    So the bus driver said “oh ma’am, that’s a personal wheelchair, it’s not a public one” and the woman was like “😶” and then my mom was like *BoMbAsTiC sIdEeYe* I guess the lady didn’t notice my mom was behind her lmao!
    Btw the reason my mom used the wheelchair was because she has breast cancer in her bones, so sometimes it’s hard for her to walk.

I have tendonitis in my left knee and it got so bad at one point that i ended up using crutches at school, i ended up in valley (i behavioral facility mainly for suicide prevention) and they took my crutches away for safety purposes. I also hate how people would take and sit in the wheelchair that was provided for me when i had gotten up because it was a 'good day' as well as they would grab the wheelchair handles and push me around when i told then no and said i was fine on my own.
