well today I got a 99 bayou 400 4x4. Its in great shape, strong as an ox and runs great. Its perfect for our lil Ranch here. I am glad it has a good rep. I have never gone wrong with Kawasaki . everything Kawasaki I have ever owned was a diamond. This quad has been taken care of pretty well. Grandkids got a ride from Grandma today so its part of the family now. Thanks for the review.
The 300 and 400 bayou’s were the best bikes Kawasaki ever made!..highly underrated and I would argue they were better bikes than the Honda 300, 350,and 400…the 400 bayou would out work all of them with its liquid cooling and it would go more places with its semi-independent rear suspension…the only bike that overtook the 400 was when Suzuki came out with their 500 kingquad in 1998!..it had a much more powerful liquid cooled engine with the semi-independent rear suspension as well…I too remember the day the 400 bayou debuted…my dad took me to see one at the dealer and they were demoing it in the parking lot and I jumped on and proceeded to drive it on top of a snow bank where I thoroughly sunk it and was in need of assistance to get it unstuck!..good times!!…they were a great bike!!
quad runner 500. the automatic that came later was called the quad master
John, you're exactly correct. The manual has advantages in certain situations, but your auto tranny does also. After we have reviewed all the Bayou family the Prairie family will be next for the Kawasaki line-up. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for your review! I have an 89 Bayou 300. Runs perfect. Use it on our ranch.
I love the old bayou's, I have owned 2 of them and still have 1 of them to this day and still runs great, no smoke. My first one was this same color as yours and was a 96, the one i kept is a 98 and it is the green with brown seat. my 11-year-old son is crazy about it so he gets to inherit it this year and I'll finally be moving up the brute 750.
I have a 93 400 still runs like a new one
I always wanted one of these! I love the jeep look of the front end of them.
thats the first thing my son in law(the jeep lover) noticed about mine I got today.
Nice 4 wheelers you have , seen your review on your 300 bayou 4x4 to , never been a Kawasaki guy but I wouldn't mind owning either of them always liked the look and stance of these models . Good review .
I have the 94 400 Bayou and it’s a tank. I’ve pulled so many logs and so much brush with this thing it’s awesome. Has so much power in a low gear that the tires will spin on any surface pulling a heavy load way before it runs out of power. It could probably drive right up a tree if you could get traction. It’s also good for trail riding too.
Thanks for the comment, these things are just as tough as you described.
I’ve got a 2005 300cc KLF (That’s what their called in England) and it’s great, I have the two wheel drive model with a diff lock and it’s perfect. What a solid quad!
I have a Prairie 400 (direct replacement of the Bayou 400) and the engine is strong and I can see what an advantage the manual would have in certain situations. If you want a work ATV the Bayou 400 would be great.
I had a lot of good times on my bayou as a kid riding the back roads ole Kawasaki loaded down with 3-4 buddy’s wish I could find one that’s in good shape I would buy it just for memories I had make it look new again and just ride round the property hood machine the bayou
I love your vids bro! I bought my daughter a bayou 300. it's got diff lock. it's a 1989 but it runs perfect it's a tank!
Thanks John and we appreciate your support! My daughter has a 300 w/diff
lock as well, unlocking the rear end makes it easy for her to turn.
We have one of these. With it's articulating rear axle, it is a fantastic machine for putting around on trails. Plenty of gearing to get you up any hill and a plush ride. It is absolutely not a sport machine, but that's not what it was built for. Slow trail riding is what we do and it works perfect for that.
Very cool!
it sure does but it's hard for her to shift and go in reverse she is only 7 so I just got her a sportsman 300 2008 awd and she loves it. thanks for the reply.
My first ever 4-wheeler.
My brother had one she will still run with the best
I just picked up a couple four wheelers non-working condition one was a Polaris 350 trail boss and the other one is a 400 Bayou I got them both for $400 I sure hope I can get them to run I’m pretty mechanically incline but I’ve never worked on a four wheeler before worse this will be my first time ever Owning one I was in the military most of my adult life never really had time
One of the toughest atvs ever made. Green to the gills!
Yes Sir! Thanks for the comment!
I had a 2001 300 4x4. It was a great four-wheeler. And it had high low range. It would do the work that the 400 would do. Just a tad slower.
Driving shaft quad, very powerfull👍😀
Thanks bayou buddy
Im just curious, how much different is the bayou 400 4x4 compared to the prairie 400 4x4??
Great video. Helped me to proceed with picking up a '97 klf 400 Bayou. Would you or anyone know if it is normal to have the shocks release or hiss air when pushing down on the machine? Both front and rear do this. None of my other quads do so assume they are shot? Again thanks for the review. Bike sat for 10 years and just needed a new carb.
Every 400 we've had does this. Thanks for the comment! Subscribe to our channel for more tech tips and reviews. czcams.com/channels/ArRwA4SAnCqF6NsuPayhEA.html
Could you possibly share how to check timing and set valves on a 400 bayou, thank you in advance.
Glenn, we don't currently have a 400 Bayou to do this with. On that note... check the cam, they are notorious for wearing the lobes off... hard to start, now power, ect....
I have a 97 and I can’t blow it up no matter what I do to it! Bearings and air filter is all I ever replace
I just got a Yamaha wolverine 350 for Christmas and as soon as I bought this four wheeler and the bayou 220 that new four wheeler I got four Christmas has been sitting since it’s a 2016 and it just sits all the time it’s sad because it won’t do nothing but drive and burn out it won’t Willy or nothing but them Kawasaki’s damm sure will 😂
Awesome, enjoy your new ride!
I have a kawasaki bayou 400 not sure what year but I need to set timing and set valves could you possibly share some information, thanks
I've got a praire 400 and I think top end they're the same exact. It's an easy but annoying job
Anyone know what top speed of the 400 is ?
Hey I have a 400 bayou and my float is stuck I think could u give me a couple porters how to fix it
Do you know how to set valves and timing on the 400 bayou?
Would you say the 400 has a noticeable power different from the 300
The 300 is faster getting to top end. The 400 is slower but has much more torque.
I have a 94 400 bayou. I love mine. Im the 2nd owner. I turned into a mud toy.
Welded the front diff and put on 29.5 outlaw's.
That thing eats
Awesome, have never welded the front diff... can you still steer it ok?
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 yes. Turning radius sucks.
But I do break front axles about every few months on the front because I welded the diff. But have true 4wd is worth it
I have a 98 one and it has a pecking noise coming from around where the timing chain starts going up in the jug I checked the tension and it feels good what could this noise be
These engines are notorious for wearing the camshaft due to oiling issues. May want to look into that area.
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 yes it did do that I just bought it about a week ago and that person had the stator cover off and put a ton of gasket maker and it clogged everything the oil filter screen the oil holes the coolant hose and the head where the coolant goes and it did wear it down but it’s more lower end right near the bottom timing chain sprocket
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 i took the jug off and it has piston slap do you know where to buy parts for these i cant find parts for them anywhere
It's been several years ago since we reviewed this atv. Do remember then having trouble finding a camshaft and parts in general.
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 I can’t find the parts so I think I might bring it to a machine shop and get it bored and a piston there
I'm 10 years old and I have one of those Minds gray and a darker gray and mine on the lights will work on it so I put new lights on it and I need the thing that goes on your gas gas tank that tells you how much gas you have left and I have had no problems on his four-wheeler except when I put my radio on it it will keep them the better. I took the radio walking from the switch and now I have never had no problems I'll just saying whatsoever now
Great to see the next generation getting involved early in the sport! Sounds like a great 400 Bayou you have and they are certainly a tough as nails work horse.
+Everything ATV-UTV-Reviews look at mike 101 and it'll tell you a little bit about my 4 wheeler and you see it and it looks like the little picture that's a four-wheeler
+Mike 101 is on CZcams
where can i find a piston for one of these?!?!?!?! just picked one up today and smokes and cant find a piston anywhere!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!
Just had another ask the same question a couple weeks ago... I looked for a 400 Bayou piston for him with no luck... If you do source one, please respond back to help others.
You ever find parts for the bayou 400 if you still have it. I have a 98 bayou 400 smokes a lot as well. Parts are only at Kawasaki for a nice price.
@@keithphillips1234 they dont make or sell pistons for these anymore. but a company i would reach out to is advanced sleeve. they have helped me with a 1981 cr80 and a 1986 kaw kx125 in the past month and i got both of them running now. so if you cant replace just the rings on yours maybe they can help in some way.
My 94 400 Bayou also has a loose rocker arm. Does anyone have the torque specs and while I’m at it the correct valve lash?
i have a service manual, if you need copy well i can give you a copy of it. 😊
@@mharcanthonybernabe3813 could you possibly take a few pictures of your manual on how to check timing and set valve clearance I would greatly appreciate it,thank you in advance.

I just found today a 99 300 Kawasaki Bayou. I think its a Bayou it doesn't say but the guy wants $250 i think i can get it for $200 and it loos brand new. He said he was riding it and it just died and he took it to a atv mech and the guy said he couldn't find what was wrong but the guy he took it to is a moron and i just had to fix one of his messes on a carb he worked on but for $200 the new tires are worth that. I think it prob the CDI. i just replaced the cdi on my 05 Polaris sportsman for $8 and its running great. Thought the cheap $8 cdi would be junk but not so far plus i have 2 just in case lol
do you mean the 400 has been around since 93? because I have a 1989 300 bayou. ..
Yes, although the 300cc Bayou began production in 1989. The 300 Bayou 4x4 was Kaw's first four wheel drive atv to market.
John Smith no no I have a 400 bayou it is a 95 that stop production somewhere around 2000
There’s one of these for 1000 near me looks pretty good worth?
If its in good shape, absolutely. Cam was bad to wear the lobes off from oil pump failure or just lack of maintenance. If it starts good, has power and doesn't backfire it's likely a good buy. If something does go wrong engine wise, the parts are getting harder to come by.
@@everythingatv-utv-reviews3565 I have a 94 bayou 400 4x4i got it for stsal but carb and petcock leaked like a bucket with buckshot
Where are the fuses?
Next to the battery.
