- I go over in this video how to make a Roman Shield, what they called it back then was "Scutum". I go step by step to make a Roman Shield, you can do this for your cosplay or film project like what we're doing. The Roman Soldiers carried this shield around as part of their standard equipment. This was the Roman Shield in the Roman Empire. Thanks to Matt Digirolamo who is a professional Roman Reenactor, helped me go over the methods of making a Roman Shield.

I think pissing on the wood was a bit lewd but I'm impressed by the volume and pressure.
Thank you for this video now me and my sons can practice building a shield wall and other formations 🎉🎉 hat off to you my friend
Godammit... now I have to do this.
I hope this is somewhat historically accurate as it answers one of the questions I've had for a long time; how they wrapped and painted the shield. Thanks for this video, much appreciated!
Yep I used cow milk and soaked in very nice with the linen. The shields are great use in sparring too!
This looks great! Nice tutorial!
Just the video I am looking for. It is amazing how little there is out there about making your own scutum.
Could I ask as I am copying your tire method can I ask about it:
1 - What diameter was the curve circumeference roughly?
2 - How long do you leave to cure when wrapped down?
3 - Does the type of glue matter?
4 - How long to wet the wood for?
5 - What sort of paint matters and can you use canvas instead of linen?
6 - How did you get the Eagle Design on there? weas it painted or decals?
Hope these aren't too many questions for you, but thanks in advance!
Looks great!!!
Thank you!!
Really appreciate the video incredible work thank you for bringing a piece of history back to life for people to see!
I watched many videos for proper instruction. All failed or were too complicated. Matt who makes shields for a living taught me the methods.
How did you cut the precise center hole in the wood for the steel boss?
How many layers of wood did you use?
I used 3 layers. Then glued and stacked them together.
Did you paint the yellow over the linseed oil? Did it stick? Did you use milk paint for the yellow too? I've followed your tutorial to the point I'm ready for paint, but want to make sure I get that part right. Thanks for the video!
Yes, painting was literally the last step. It stuck just fine. I just used paint from Walmart. I only used milk paint to soak in the Lenin before I covered with linseed oil. Made the red darker :)
What kind of paint did you use for the yellow? Also, do you have any videos on how you painted the design on the front?
Milk paint
hello what and the thickness of your plate please?
can this shield be used for combat?
Thanks
Did you try fighting any barbarians after you did the shield?:)
Looks great! I am thinking about doing this myself and hang it on my wall.
The Barbarians are the undead in this short film. There is a scene where a horde will clash into the shield wall. We're preparing to do a rehearsal on it :) yeah Roman Soldier reenactment use this method to build their shields.
@@revengeoftheromansorceress thank you! I will check out that video:)
What is the scale of the wood ? It’s a great video !
What extra steps did you take for the other features on the shield at the end?
You glue Lenin over the shield. Then use a sand block to even out over the shield. Then once dried, paint it with milk paint. It's like water paint that soaks in the Lenin. Then you gin seed to seal coat it for protection and gives the red a darker tint to it.
Can you please give me a list of where I can get the equipment and where you got everything. Even if its just the wood. I am having trouble finding the wood for this. Thank you!
I got most the material from Home Depot. Also, you can follow my other cha nnel Gladiator Combat Sport. I'll be posting more how to build shields as well.
@@revengeoftheromansorceress Thank you
How/where did the metal parts come from? I’m looking into building one and that’s my biggest concern
We ordered it from an Indian manufacturer
good diy. gratiam te.
We appreciate it!
im interested in as to how one can easily do the middle metal bulge (is it called boss or smth idk)
It's a boss, we got our special ordered from an Indian.
They have bosses on Kult of Athena.
The link I posted isn't an ad. It's a link to bosses on the Kult of Athena site

@@myidea719 Just go with the step by step in the video and process gets easier!
Appreciate it
what is the actual linen product called?
You can just pick it up at Joann
Is this usable for combat?
Yes, we also spar with it gladiator. You can check out Gladiator combat sport.
@@revengeoftheromansorceress thank you
Can you add some instruction? You kinda skipped over the entire process of adding the handle, which is fairly important
How thin was the wood
Its just 3 layers of wood the thin stuff. I have to go back find out how thin it us. Just a sheet of wood.
Okay so like a 1/4 inch sheet I’m guessing?
@@sushuki4833 I believe it was. It was pretty thin. I just glued 3 sheets together
How much did this weigh?
The shields weigh like 20 pounds. They're great for sparring in Gladiator fencing.
Hey! Im back can you make A roman sheild By cutting at 49 inches and then bend it? It should be 33 inches from point to point Those were the real sheild diementions. Can you make it?
What are the dimensions of the shield
32" W and 48" L
Thank you I’m legit gonna do this on like Sunday or Monday. Sunday I’m getting a metal barrel for the purpose of making a shield. Also how expensive are Linen sheets like the ones you have in the video?
Told my discord to sub to you so expect some subs to come okay
@@sushuki4833 Thank you Randy appreciate it! I got the linen from Joann store. You can get Linen from good will too. Then the copper nails at Lowe's to hammer in the boss. The boss I bought from India. Honestly, the shield has taken a good beating in duels and fights. Giving it a lot character!
Loved the video but woulda loved it more had you put your camera or phone on a tripod instead of bouncing around like a drunk on Saturday night. Still pretty cool shield!!!
Instructions unclear do i add the canvas or leather first?
The Lenin on it? That comes before you put the leather straps.
@@revengeoftheromansorceress huh.. in my research you would put a layer of canvas then a layer of leather
Maybe i was too tired when i re wached this leving the coment
The Romans would KILL for Titebond. Lol.
Lmao 🤣 🤣
