It makes no sense the US claim that a ceasefire would "interfere" with negotiations. No, ceasefires are designed to pause hostilities precisely to negotiate a longer-term, mutually acceptable resolution of conflict that cannot be achieved thru pure military force and cannot even be effectively discussed during such ongoing carnage. A ceasefire is needed for sensible, multilateral, and honest negotiations. The US's position to veto the ceasefire proposal is horrendous and unjustifiable.

My guess is that the US is trying to negotiate behind closed doors or sees its alliance with Israel in the middle east as too valuable. Also, a ceasefire might just kick the can down the road. If hamas retakes over, they will just attempt to attack Israel again in the future, they have said so blatantly. My guess is this a way to end the issue there for the foreseeable future, while the US prepares for conflict in the pacific.

The point is to ensure the powerful nations stay involved. Its why the only time there was consensus was in the late 1900's when the Soviet Union abstained. The point isn't to democratically solve issues. It's for powers to come together to discuss issues diplomatically before war and violence happens. The UN is not the world government. It's a diplomatic meeting place. Taiwan doesn't get to vote or be involved despite being a country. Genocide is committed against Armenians, Assyrians, and countless African peoples and nothing is done. The job of the UN is to stop major wars between major powers. And it has done that job well. Palestine is not a major power, neither is Israel.
