  • In a riveting excerpt from Episode 2 of The Obi One Podcast, Frank Lampard joins Mikel to revisit one of the most controversial matches in Champions League history-the semi-final against Barcelona. They dissect Chelsea's superior performance and the refereeing decisions that arguably cost them the final. After securing an early lead and being denied multiple penalty shouts, Chelsea watched their dreams slip away with Barcelona's last-gasp equalizer, which sent them to a final victory over Manchester United.
Mikel asserts that with fair officiating, not only would Chelsea have triumphed in the semi-final, but they also had the strength to overpower Manchester United in the final showdown. Lampard weighs in on the evolution of football justice, speculating that with VAR in play, Chelsea's grievances would have been vindicated, altering the course of football history.
Lampard also praises the passion and character shown by Chelsea's players in the face of such disappointment. Despite subsequent bans, he contends that the referee's oversight was the true injustice deserving of punishment.
This segment offers an intense analysis, with personal insights from two of Chelsea's key players during the heat of one of football's biggest stages. Their conversation sheds light on the impact of technology in football and the enduring question of "what if?"

Barcelona played in 10 because of that "paid" ref and was disadvantaged in the home game. So the "robbed" Chelsea got an away goal advantage due to refs and was playing 11 vs 10.
Plus they got a lucky wonder goal that made it impossible for Barcelona.
But after that somehow the ref remembers that he was paid.
But I don't think we needed that, just let us won at home and play 11 vs 11.
For me it doesn't add up.
But I am not surprised because we were accused of robbing Inter after we were massacred in two games by those refs. And the difference was we managed to knock them out despite the masacre but they took Bojan's goal.
So it's hard for a team from Catalunia to have a voice in a world dominated by the Castilian, German, Italian and English media.
I am not saying the penalties were not there, but the narrative is a bit one sided.

@@lukassoos7597 Which part? Barcelona 'fans', who all seem to speak perfect English, seem to have rewritten history. The Messi 'handball' he didn't even appeal for it because it was too close. The Henry 'foul', he was already slipping, you can pause the video on the exact moment before he is touched at all and he is already falling backwards after a terrible first touch. The Eto'o onside moment was a mistake, but for some reason it is seen as some sort of inevitability that he would have scored a 1-1 from a position in the box that far from guarantees a goal against the best goalkeeper in the world. But, if you want to say Barcelona should have won the first leg 1-0, then fine, Chelsea should have won the second 5-1.
What is your defense for Busquets dive against Inter Milan in 2010 and van Persie's red card at the Nou Camp in 2011? Remember that this is the same Barcelona that are being investigated for bribing referees in Spain for almost two decades - were they so polite to their European counterparts that they didn't do that in Europe?

The handballs by Pique and Eto'o were stonewall, as was the foul by Abidal on Drogba, who should also have been sent off as he was last man (15 minutes before he actually was). With VAR, the Alves foul on Malouda also would have been given because the foul took place inside the box, although that may have been slightly harsh to give.
The 2010/11 Barcelona team was incredible (although they needed a disgrace of a red card to get past a poor Arsenal side), but I really don't agree with people when they say this 2008/09 team was up there with them, after all, if the referee made the correct decisions, Chelsea may have ended up beating them 5-1.
In 2009/10, against Internazionale they were also gifted a ridiculous 11 vs 10 situation for most of the game at the Nou Camp when Busquets dived to get Thiago Motta sent off. Something about that period really doesn't sit right, especially considering what we know now about their historical bribing of refs in domestic football - there's no reason they wouldn't have done the same in Europe.

So I don't think it was intentional on the ref, he just lost it, probably because Anelka forced his hand and the free red card.

You know you are just being stupid when you compare 2 handballs in the box, and 3 clear fouls in the penalty area with one decision against Barcelona. If the ref overturn Abidal’s red card it was still going to be 0-0 at the Camp Nou. But 4 to 5 clear penalty decisions at the Bridge would have given Chelsea at lead 3 goal cushion. So when you say they scored one goal in 180 mins, I’m wondering what Barca was doing from the first minute of the first leg till the 180th minute of the 2nd leg. Scoring goals? Or spent it pulling shirts of the team who was clearly through on goal to score, handling the ball in areas they shouldn’t and putting in tackles no one does in the 18 yard with the knowledge that the ref might be in their favour. How dare you come here and spit trash. Even the ref’s career ended after the game for a reason. How do you ‘score’ when the opposition keep fouling you and the ref does nothing! Except hit it from outside the box again like Essien did.
