Gymnast Maxes Out Deadlift - How Much Can A Gymnast Lift?

  • After my last gymnastics training session of the year, I had an epic lifting session with a view to test my deadlift 1 rep max. I have literally never deadlifted in my life, but was curious to see how much weight I could get off the floor, with no previous specific training.
    My upper body and core strength are pretty good from my training background but my leg strength is not that great, certainly when compared to a power lifter. I have used squats sporadically in my training but the majority of my leg conditioning has been quite light and plyometric, which doesn't really set me up well for a max deadlift.
    My target was to at least lift twice my bodyweight (155kg) and I ended up smashing that and surprising myself by hitting 180kg! I think 185 would definitely go another time when fresh, with fewer warm ups - and with a decent block of training I think 200kg would be possible - this is something I may have to pursue in the future when I'm done with gymnastics!
