I was born in 1978 & lived through the Jordan Era. After his '88 & '89 seasons, it was obvious how talented he was. After the first 3 peat, he was the best that anyone alive had seen. After the second 2 peat, there were no words. If I'm remembering right, the 45 Era was due to his number 23 being retired. There was a process to 'unretire' it, so he wore 45 while that happened. I wish I would have bought one of the 45 jerseys b/c they would be worth alot now.

Jordan's number got retired after his first retirement after the first 3Peat. So he couldn't wear 23 when he came back the first season.

No. That's not right. At all. He could have worn 23 when he came back. They didn't uretire it when he switched back to 23. It was still up in the rafters when he switched back. The 45 story is because of his father. He wore 45 during little league baseball through high school baseball. When he finally made the HS basketball team, (he got cut during tryouts his sophomore year) he was given 45. When he came back after baseball he chose 45 because it was the first time in his life that he played a game and his father wasn't there. Since his father wasn't going to be there for the end of his career, he wanted to wear the number he wore at the very beginning. He eventually went back to 23 because like most other star athletes, he was a little superstitious and he just wasn't comfortable in 45. Here's the direct quote from episode 4 of The Last Dance...
“I didn’t want to wear 23 because I knew my father wasn’t there to watch me, and I felt it was a new beginning and 45 was my first number when I was playing in high school. I was nervous because I hadn't played competitive in a long time, and I just felt naked because my father wasn't there. It just seemed so different."

So, he's lying? Every interview he's ever given regarding why he switched is a lie? I've been going to Bulls games for more than 40 years. Since before anybody even knew who Jordan was. I can tell you every Bulls retired number and every player who wore a retired number after it was retired. You can also actually look it up. Or you can use common sense. How can a team fine a player for wearing a number if the team is the one who gave him the number? The NBA does not retire numbers. Individual teams retire numbers. Individual teams decide whether or not a player can wear a retired number. If the retired player gives the team the ok, the team will allow it. They retired Pippens jersey, and when he came back to finish his career with the Bulls, he wore 33 even though it was retired. The greatest Bull before Michael Jordan was Bob Love. His jersey #10 was retired. They drafted BJ Armstrong and he asked if he could have 10, Bob Love ok'd it and BJ Armstrong wore 10, which was hanging in the rafters for his whole career. Terry Cummings has his #34 retired by the Milwaukee Bucks. Giannis wears #34. Jason Tatum wears the same number as Robert Parrish did, and it's hanging up in Boston. Carmelo Anthony is right now beefing with the Nuggets because nobody in the Nuggets front office asked him if he would be cool with Jokic wearing #15. It's a little different now because of licensing for 2k games and whatnot, but you can wear retired numbers. Back then you just had to ask, today you have to file paperwork.

45 was Jordan's number when he played baseball. When he returned to the NBA he was wearing 45. During his comeback he was a little bit inconsistent. Some times he was rusty, the next game he turned into "Air Jordan" again. In game 1 of the playoff series against the Orlando Magic the Bulls lost due to some very uncharacteristic back to back turnovers by Jordan in the last seconds of the game. People were shocked. To add insult to injury his old teammate Horace Grant who was playing for the Magic then scored the game winner. After the game Orlando SG Nick Anderson said something like "45 isn't like 23". The next game Jordan was wearing 23 again and killed the Magic (though the Magic won the series). It was against the rules to change numbers in the middle of a playoff series but what was the NBA supposed to do? If the GOAT wants to change his jersey number you can't really stop him. The playoff series against the Magic was also the first time Jordan was wearing the XIs. That was against the rules as well because his team mates were wearing all black shoes (which was custom for the Bulls in the playoffs) but the NBA didn't try to stop him from doing that either. I think he got fined for that. The funny thing is that during Jordan's comeback everyone wanted to have a 45 jersey. A year later they were a joke. 45 will always be connected with rusty Jordan who still scored 55 points against the Knicks.

I've seen lots of people talking about why he wore #45, so I won't say much on that because most of it has been covered. The real thing is why he chose #23 to begin with. Michael's brother, Larry, wore #45 in school, so Michael chose #23 because he said a long time ago in an interview that he wanted to be half as good as his brother. Ironically, since you can't divide 2 numbers evenly into 45, Michael chose #23. It is as close as he could get to half of 45. In the Olympics (he was in two), he chose the #9 also to honor his brother because 4+5 = 9, and they don't or didn't use large numbers on jerseys. Other people have already mentioned why he didn't immediately go back to #23. Back after he came back from retirement, Jordan also did an interview and said he wasn't sure he wanted to go back to #23 because that was the jersey number his dad last saw him play in, so he was having some conflict with that, but we all know what he ultimately decided.

The 98 Finals are the highest rated Finals, and overall the highest rated ANYTHING in Pro basketball history. The game he came back from retirement in 95 is the highest rated game of the previous 30 or 40 years. I read some shit on SI, where they interviewed people who worked in the pacer's stadium for that game and what they described was some next level, madness type shit of how celebs were losing their minds trying to get tickets, how like they had to process like 6,000-7,000 press credentials and basically had to tell like 99% of the press they can't make it as there was no room. Even royal families from around the world were trying to get tickets. What these people described happened that day, was some shit that no movie could touch, in out of this world crazy shit. Missed the first few years of MJ's career, but I recorded on VHS just about every Bulls game from 90 until the 98 finals.
Another unbelievable stat is the bulls lost the first 3 games in a row to open the 90 season, they never lost 3 games in a row again until after MJ left the bulls. Almost a decade of basketball without losing that many in a row sounds like BS lol. No team has ever done that.

What really made Jordan the GOAT is stay completely away from politics and religion...all he ever did was build his brand and destroy all opposition who came against him in the game of basketball. He is a killer in the most serious way and when the series or game was on the line, he ALWAYS CAME THROUGH. Almost EVERY game of Jordan's career was a highlight reel... Looks like Anthony Edwards may be the next MJ Kobe Bryant 2.0... neither of those guys passed up critical shots because of fear of free throw line and all eyes on you and no escaping responsibility of missing free throws to lose the game... Both Jordan and Bryant are killers with no fear. Can't say that for someone who thinks he is the goat when he totally isn't because he has all time scoring record. Jordan would've won 8 straight titles of he didn't retire because of Father's death. Jordan and Kobe NEVER AVOIDED CONTACT and played all games relentlessly on both ends of floor. Both had the clutch gene and never ran from challenges they faced. Jordan play 82 games the last year of his career at 40 with 37 mins played. 💯 MJ and KB are basketball scientists... Totally defied and understood the physics of basketball and winning with their original franchise that drafted them. They didn't run from that and built a championship with what they had. Didn't try to build no super team. They were the SUPER STARS and both made everyone better around them even though the talent they had wasn't on their level. PIPPEN and SHAQ are the best compliments for greatness for a team. Lastly, Jordan was the BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER too... Destroyed everyone in the Olympics also...
