- Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! A couple days ago I noticed the Cheyenne supercomputer was put up for auction by the United States government. With an intention to purchase it, time and logistics didn't play into the dream unfortunately. What did I want to do with it? Let's find out! Thanks for watching!

Thankfully hair grows back... Just because something is clean, it doesn't mean it looks good. Muta doesn't have "the gamer dent" from wearing a headset but his skull above the ears just... dips inwards. The hair concealed that. I think it's due to him having really big cheek bones, his big happy face makes the top of his skull look smaller in comparison.

We have a super computer in my work, honestly it is such a bummer when you have to explain that all it does is run multiple layers of hysplit and flex part trajectories and then throw all of their results in a single Matlab script to get cool graphs (they ain't even that cool). So yeah it doesn't create holograms that are ready to fuck you dry, it just do annoyingly computing demanding chores.

i was air force in the 2000s; an entire pallet of brand new ps2 came through my port. I was a tech person so i didnt get it at first. the super computer was a thought, but also at the time the ps2 was cheaper than the computers the military was using and ps2 systems were being frankensteined to save a dime.

If u haven't seen the wan show linus didn't think it was worth operating a leaky server as it was water cooled and the power consumption alone was larger all the buildings ltt owns plus having dedicated engineers for the server didn't seem a good investment even for a couple of videos and to gut it out later and to sell parts it wasn't worth it basically all that mutahar said in this video

well I own several logic boards incased in glass from a Cray-1 supercomputer from 1977, not really operational, but still pretty cool to have.

It's kinda sad to see all these old computers get scrapped. I hope a couple of them get kept around for a museum piece. Already hard to find old mainframes in museums, it would be nice to keep a few supercomputers around.
These are less interesting from the supercomputers of old like a Cray-1 for example. These are all off the shelf hardware you can buy yourself, just set in a very paralelized way. Back in the day most of the parts were custom, and they were pretty much one of a kind setup.

You should build a cluster and get it to do something interesting. Lots of supercomputers or mini versions but not so many that are being to make regular tasks either super fast or greatly enhance the experience.

Something to touch on for the PS3 and why it could be used as a super computer but other consoles can't is that the processor type was something called a Cell microprocessor, which was able to connect to and work in tandem with other similar processors over a wired network, effectively acting as one machine.
This is a very simplified explanation, but it's a bit insane that it ever happened.

Muta's looking sharp! He might not have a supercomputer, but he's got quite the motivation self-improvement wise.
Having spent some time on clusters like Cheyenne (and other heterogenous clusters) it's so damn cool to see that there is one ACTUALLY PURCHASABLE. That blows my mind, like if I just bought that unreasonably large warehouse I happened to see on my way home once then you might have a solid place for it.
But all jokes aside the stuff you can do on a cluster like this is so interesting. But the maintenance and upkeep? Nah, that's a hard pass. Running and maintaining effective scheduling through PBS or Swurm-like schedulers is a pain, especially with fault tolerance.
I think it's often understated just how much work goes into maintain the software side of a cluster, just as much as the hardware. It's pretty incredible really.
