1st thing.... your able to bring the rpm's way to high, these motors just hum along a nice calm rpm, and I dont hear a"true" backfire...maybe a just popping? If you hear something I dont though, check for a vacuum leak at one of the intake gaskets behind the carb, and take apart the the carb and clean it while its off, especially the jets.
I know how to do that. You keep pulling the blade lever down repeatedly. So you think of it like its a gas pedal in a car except the motor turns off unless you hold the lever down in this case scenario. Put simply this only applies to lawnmowers. It's fun if you know how,to take care of it and just feel like being noisy with a little engine.
mine is doing the same thing!! not sure what it could be yet..researched and sounds like it could be one of several things. A) Magneto B) Sheared flywheel key C) Timing issue Let me know if you figured your out yet please.. Thanks

i have 2 honda mowers like that, and both of them sometimes backfire when started. i have no idea why
