    I got this mower pretty cheap and when I tried to start it the engine backfired a LOT. Turned out that a rocker has lost it's valve cap and it was actually a great little motor.
    This is another easy DIY mower repair. Almost anyone can do this at home.
    Update, this mower has found a good home in Oklahoma. :-)

      Thanks. When I first looked at it I was a little surprised at the self propelled system myself. You are right, the deck and the motor didn't start life together. came in from a nasty issue with a B&S that is backfiring after wife hit a trailer hitch with the blade. am just cooling off after restling with it to see this video. She backfiring everyso often but not seeing like she has compression. So a sunday set to relax a little and do other things is now a "I have to get the lawn done today" and I have no runnign m owers. Oh and did I mention I found out Inhave effing cancer this week too? yeah. nice huh?

      @GuysPlayingWithTools  Před 4 měsíci

      I am sorry to hear that. I will cross my fingers that they can get you through it in one piece. I don't complain about anything because I know a lot of people have it tougher than I do.
      Did you check to make sure it didn't toss a valve spring? Hitting a stump can shake the motor up enough to cause it, and it would take compression down to 0... even though it kinda runs.
      If you are near Dallas, send me an email and I will set you up with something that works. I usually have something around that I wouldn't miss. 👍

  • @Shawnee.Hills.Small.Engine

    Those self propelled Snapper mulchers were somewhat pricey when new, and I rarely see one in my area. The Briggs & Stratton 6 HP Intek is a tough engine, and the rest of the mower is well built. The only disadvantage is a brace has to be removed underneath to access the oil drain plug. The price was a steal.

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  Před 2 lety

      They are tougher than people give them credit for. I see a lot of people turning mowers over to drain the oil, I am with you, I tried it both ways, then got in the habit of using drain plug, even when it's hard to get to. This that way I don't have to drain the gas.

  • @mjg263
    @mjg263 Před 2 lety +1

    Those early Briggs OHV engines were very problematic and hard to get parts for. In addition to the valve train troubles (which the new ones STILL have), the carb had a tendency to leak and fill the crankcase with fuel due to the low intake port design too. They run great when they’re all dialed in but they were nowhere near as reliable as the flatheads. That Snapper snowblower drive system always makes me chuckle, how many parts and goofy linkages can you use to accomplish the simplest task lol!

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  Před 2 lety +1

      I am a huge flathead fan. My personal edger... Techumsa flathead motor. 9 years old and running strong.
      I have drained more than a couple mowers of oil that was more gas than oil...

    Ran over a hidden chunk of tree root, stopped the mower dead. Restarted it and it was ok, but vibrating (probably bend the blade). Shut it off, now when starting it again it will backfire one time on startup, it never did that before. I do not notice any discernible difference in the motor sound from before or after the impact.

      Iam pretty sure one of 2 things could have happened to it. Check the bottom and see if the blade is torn up, it may have hit a stump and wrecked the flywheel key. If everything looks good underneath I would need to know which motor it has before I jump into the next idea. Does it have a valve cover in the front of the motor?

      Sorry about that. I have better video equipment now and i can get much better angles. It was definitely a quick fix. What happened here was that the valves in this motor each had a retainer between the rocker arm and the spring and one fell out, causing the backfire.
      You can put the retainer back by hand, then use it to conpress the valve, then move the rocker arm back into place.
      After that you rotate the blade until both valves are closed(rockers are both "up") and set the lash(gap under the rocker).
      The lash isn't nearly as picky on single cylinder engines due to them running at pretty low RPM(under 4000 rpm floored)
