"now that I graduated idk what to do with my life" is most classic feeling after finishing college, congrats for graduating
Yeah I am kinda confused on that statement. Is it the point of college is to study a field you are interested in going into? Or did she use colleges as a way to stay in the country till she gets married?
@@ismaela.6973 Just because you study a field you're interested in doesn't mean that a) there's only one career path to choose from, b) you still want to stick with the original career path that set you for a degree, or c) that there are employment opportunities for said degree immediately available. Also, accusing her of using college as a way to stay in Germany just until she gets married is kind of gross.
@@ismaela.6973She explained it all, didn't she? She has multiple options what to do next and hasn't made a choice yet. As she can pay her bills with her work in Social Media, she does not have to get another job anyways and could keep on doing that full time
@@ismaela.6973 it's probably both - as a couple, they're better off with Uyen studying in Germany in English with GB working in his field in Germany rather than Uyen starting her career in Vietnam with GB trying to break into his field in Vietnam. Particularly as he didn't speak the language yet! When I had a similar decision to make, we were both established in our careers, so we were choosing between taking the working-holiday visa in Australia (which would restrict my new partner's job chances significantly) and me taking a job that I'd found in Germany. Like Uyen, I originally wanted to stay in my home country, but moving to Germany was definitely the right decision. Maybe it's confusing because it's complicated: two people from very distant places want to live together and need some way of making that work financially.
I understand both of your views. To clarify, I wasn't trying to sound like an ass(which I do feel like you two took it to the heart). Just trying to make sense of what she was stating, especially since she studied to get a master's, no? That's a lot of dedication to not fully use your studies in the real world. For using her schooling as a way to stay in the country, I've seen a lot here in the states but that doesn't make the person a bad individual. I don't judge, unless you are doing something bad of course lol. I do wish her the best on anything she decides to do and again thank you for your insights

Riiiiiiight, that is the part that stood out for me.
Even as a German I can relate to the difficulty of making friends. I had lots of friends in University but then lived in Vietnam for 2 and a half years before coming back to Germany. But we now live in a new city where we know nobody and it's the same here. I make more friends with expats than with Germans because everyone here already has a solid group of friends and it's definitely hard to get in...
Machs wie unser Lehrling. Der hat in der hälfte der Großstädte Freunde. Der quatscht gleichaltrige immer an der Bushaltestelle an. Haste mal Feuer, oder wo kann man hier was unternehmen? Und irgendwie schafft der das laufend neue Leute bei zu kennen. Teilweise kommen da richtig crazy Storys bei raus.
It's easy to make friends in Germany once you realize that you just need to adjust a bit. Don't wait for others to invite you or immediately include you, but take the initiative and invite others. Share that you'd like to do this or that, like sports, but don't have anyone to join you. In a pinch, even be honest if you can't find any friends, like being open about it with your colleagues. Ask colleagues if they want to go for lunch with you or something. Sometimes you need to come out of your shell a bit more. That's all.
Well, not quite everyone has already a set group of friends. I am 27 and found all of my current friends within the last 1-2 years. I literally had no friends from 2017-2021. It is hard to find others, definitely! But I just wanted to give some hope to you that there are still other lonesome people out there, since I was one of them.
What worked for me is to focus on myself. It sounds clichee, but it worked out, because the people that are similar to me in basic things like core values and principles, viewpoint, life experience, communities of interest, etc, where mainly staying at home alone when I still was.
I started with believing that i would eventually meet the peoole that share enough with me to agree on my understanding of morality and need of kind of social interaction naturally as long as I would work on do the things that I love and build whatever I need to be able to do that. And thats what actualky happened. I started to do therapy because that is sadly a main thing about my life since early childhood. And i went through years of it until i was open to jkin an ambulant group therapy, there i met 3 out of my 5 close friends, and the other two at a specialised clinical therapy. Im not saying go and meet people at therapy. But if you di what YOU want and need, you will meet people right there. Im sure of it.
I think it’s important to realize there are other lonely and friendless people out there too, so maybe be proactive if you want to find friends. I also don’t have many friends left since I’m married with kids, but I made a few in previous years through church or joining other organizations, and from going back to school (for nursing). The nursing program didn’t work out for me but I met some cool people that way who were eager to socialize and go out for drinks, so that was a fun experience. It also helps if you have that 1 friend or two that are proactive and always reach out to you, if you’re more reserved and introverted like me. Now, my daughter is becoming my best friend as she gets older, lol, but it definitely helps having more family around, like a sibling you’re close to, or move back to your hometown if that’s an option for you, and reconnect with some old friends maybe? Hope all the socially awkward people like me out there or just the busy people who’ve lost friends over the years/moved, etc., are able to find new and lasting friendships! 😊🙌
And on a side note: I would tell all the younger couples who are dating or engaged, not to lose your friends because if you think you don’t have any friends now, it’s going to get much worse once you get married and have kids! Unless you make “mom friends “. 🙄Good luck, it’s a tough world out there! 😅
I find you have to excel at a hobby. They show interest in you. I think that’s a universal approach to getting close to Germans. They really respect discipline.

I returned to college at age 48: it was hard as I ruptured my Achilles, was pre menopausal (TMI😮!)and...just took my youngest child to an addiction recovery center😢
LSS: I survived and my son has been drug free (since then!) and very healthy/successful. I've been a RN now for almost 10 yrs and wow, you inspire me.

Well done! 😃 I was also 48 when I started nursing school. First semester I got cancer, then my mum-in-law died, then my best friend died, but I got through it all and now all my life lessons are serving my patients.

@@chebtremb2244 here in Ohio, USA. I attended a community college with no regrets❤ I encourage others to work on pre requisites first as it is good practice and lightens your load once you are admitted to the program. I found the community college here very receptive to 'seasoned' adults😊

The way you prepared everything before coming to Germany, like the getting all the paperwork from your university, your English certificate, the course you took for that, applying to universities - and all of that without your family knowing you even have a German boyfriend! Thats so brave and determined!
So his family gathered 10k on short notice for his foreign girlfriend to come live in Germany? That must have taken an enormous amount of trust, if a friend told me they were doing this, I would assume it is a scam. Glad it worked out though.
With Asian culture, most of the time they have extended family to back them up. Also, from the moment kids are born parents will already have savings specifically prepared for their kids college in the future.

Their son was going back and forth to Vietnam for 3 years, at that point they probably felt like they need to help them move in together or their son aka “German boyfriend” would’ve had to move to Vietnam. After 3 years his parents were most likely convinced it was a serious relationship.
Wow, this beautiful lady moved away from her cherished family, lifestyle, and awesome culture and language to be with a German??!! He is so lucky to have such a happy, positive, popular, brave, selfsacrificing, caring, friendly, talented girlfriend.
The family helped out for a reason. I can see he has grown a lot since being with her.
It wasn't until she went to Switzerland before a stranger smiled at her. That had never happened in Germany.
He gets his own way rather often, and she does many things he wants her to do. The habits are very particular and not important, but she does them. She is amazing. It is very wise of them all to support such a source of joy in their lives.
Uyen - as a woman who went back to school at 53 starting with my Bachelors, and getting my Masters when I turned 60, my best advice is to give yourself a well deserved break. Just chill out for the rest of this year, enjoy time with your fiance with no time restrictions anymore, and have fun on CZcams. You have a FABULOUS sense of humour with great comedic timing. If you do want to keep yourself busy for the rest of this year, start planning out your content for the channel for next year - just do stuff that's fun til next year!! Well done on the Masters - definitely deserved!!

Hi Uyen, I'm also a fellow Vietnamese, and I'm still in my last year of university. I've been looking for a good country to study in and have been torn for such a long time. But I found your channel, I found the mundane and normalcy I want to know when living abroad as a Vietnamese student. Thank you so much, I'm beginning to learn German and also looking for a suitable school there. It's not entirely because of you (that'd be weird), but you definitely make me feel more confident choosing Germany over other options. I definitely think that you did the right thing on not immediately marrying the german fiance, bcs at the time A) you might not know 100% if marriage is an option and B) should something happened, a master's degree from Germany is highly valueable in developing countries like Viet Nam. My cousin (Indonesian) was in the same situation as you, and studied in France even when her bf at the time was offering marriage. She would end up marrying her French BF but overall is satisfied with her life choices.
Yep. Women should never depend on marriage alone as that is extremely unreliable whereas education, skills, knowledge, etc., can get you out of situations such as a nightmare marriage. LOL
My husband, who's Norwegian, moved to the states to be with me via a student visa at first, and while it wasn't quite as involved as what you had to do, listening to your process brought back some old memories of waiting for paperwork, wondering if things would work out, all the stress and anticipation. I'm glad you're sharing your stories. 🙂
I remember after master graduation I sat together with two friends. I didn't really get it yet when it suddenly came over me and I said full of surprise: "I'm free!" But what to do next was not really a question since I already was working in a full-time job. It was so much pressure which all of a sudden went away.

My sons are currently learning German and hope to study over there when they graduate high school (sorry I am unsure what it is called universally, in the US it is high school). Hi, die you check entry requirements for German universities? A USD usually does not qualify. Only under certain conditions (3.0 Average as well as regarding certain academic units) can you apply for Studienkolleg which is the 1 year prep for entering the university programm. If they are in high school now,it's worth it to make sure these requirements are fulfilled. Check the anabin system for more info.
I would recommend looking into the difference between "university" and "university of applied science" and what that means for degree equivalences with US, in case they want to go back to the US afterwards. This is super important as not all degrees are recognised in all countries in the same way. As uyen said, the applied one is more practical while university is really very academic.

When I decided to do a MA after my BA and didn't think my GPA was high enough, I went back to do a few courses in the area of my MA to get good grades, meet the profs, and ensure it was the right program for me.
I also thought I would never go back to school but a year and a half later I went back to college just for a certificate program and now (8 years post MA) I am applying to a PhD 😅
May i ask, how do you do the courses? From online courses or from university?

Good idea about the Vietnamese class.
While my masters degree can transfer over many fields, I am definitely not doing what I expected when I first graduated. But three years later, I'm making more money, getting more responsibilities, and moving my career along in away I couldn't imagine. I'm convinced that "knowing what we're supposed to do for the rest of our lives" is not how people actually live their lives. Plus there's more to life than work!

Congratulations on your graduation!!! You worked so hard and so long to achieve this goal! As for my humble opinion, I do recommend staying in the “working environment”, even if it’s just something part time. Social media is awesome while it’s generating income, but you can never know what to expect, and as you move forward in life (considering children or family trips and the like) having that reliable income will mean so much. Also it gives you something to fall back on (and keeps your job skills up to date). But most of all, just know that you don’t have to make these decisions alone. You have a wonderful partner who loves you and supports you. The TWO OF YOU need to sit down and figure out what looks best for your current life and your future goals together. I know whatever you guys choose will be just right for the journey you both are on.

You are so precious! I retired from working at one of two land grant Universities in Texas. I had the pleasure of working with Undergrads, grads and post grads. Granted, this isn't International Studies, but I think your experience had many similarities to the students I knew. I also taught Elementary School for years before going into Higher Ed. I absolutely admire your tenacity and your sense of adventure. Major life changes come with anxiety and I've found the slow and thoughtful approach can yield very positive results. Also, take time to honestly enjoy everything around you. There were years where I didn't have that chance because life was FAR too hectic. Congratulations on a monumental achievement! Well Done.

Congratulations, Uyen on your success in studies and life in Germany so far! I know the struggles myself, been living here for 12 years! Give yourself a pat on the back. Take your time to plan your next steps as, in Germany it´s not so easy to change Beruf so easily once you are settled in one. Dont worry about german friends, I have been living here for 12 years and I can´t say I have any REAL german friends. Lots of good german acquaintances but not really friends, definitely not like those back home. It´s a normal experience for many of us foreigners and, you know, it´s OK.
Maybe if you haven´t had your german driving licence yet, you could think of getting one. It´s very useful especially when you have children later. All the best in your next steps. Hope you won´t give up social media in a long time as watching your videos always make me smile.

HI Uyen, it's absolutely normal to feel lost after such a challenging and focused time if your life! It's just a sign that something new is starting :) I'm sure you'll do great. I'm moving out from academia in Germany after not only a PhD but also a postdoc, and I have the same strange feeling. You get used to it once you notice that always better things come afterwards :) You're incredibly grounded for your age, highly functional and everyone likes you clearly, so I wouldn't worry too much

It might be a confusing time, but please remember all that you have accomplished! Congratulation! I can't imagine how hard it is to study in a country abroad. My language learning skills are very limited (i try to learn french and even after more than a year of daily exercises it is still very poor) so i'm deeply impressed of your courage, resilience and humour. After my master’s degree I felt exactly the same, I was DONE with studying like “please never show me a book again” and quite lost, it’s nice to see that we’re not alone!

you don't actually need that money, but you have to show you can afford your living expenses including medical insurance, housing, ...
So if you manage to show your parents have enough income, you show a stipend by someone who is well-known, you get someone in germany to guarantee he pays what's needed if you run out of money or sth like that you won't need that money beforehand.
The amount is based upon what a german student can get at maximum as a sort-of-loan from the government (Bafög) to allow them to study if their parents are not well-off. That's 934€ at the moment or 11.208€ per year. Since a german student is expected to need that amount of money to survive it's only logical to expect foreign students to show they have the same amount. Also you may live from that amount - but only so that you always have enough money to live the remainder of the year.
Same for Austria
I knew a woman from georgia (not the us state) who just have her father beg a friend to lend them the money just for her show the bureaucrat she can afford it before sending it back
