I moved from Vietnam to Germany 3 years ago for studying. I make silly videos about how Germany looks like through the eyes of a Vietnamese - on my way to be your favourite Ausländer! :D

I think that it’s a bit of internalized racism. “You’re just a Vietnamese, how can you compete with the smart Germans?” It’s sad that she feels that way about her own people, but I don’t think she means to hurt Uyen. She just has some old internalized biases to work through. 💙

German parents can also be masterful at gaslighting and humbling their children. I think that's a parent thing for parents across many cultures who cannot imagine the creativity of their offspring being anything that could mean success. Sometimes the life lesson is to ignore your parents. Love them. But also pick the moments that you ought to ignore them.

@@keepXonXrockinoh ouch that mindset hurts😭 i've received that message my whole life (not specifically from my parents, just from... everywhere) and internalized it so much, i'm still not sure if i chose my current major in uni because i truly wanted it or just because people told me to... only time will tell if i made the right choice or not. hope you're doing okay, being "gifted" is not always all fun and games :')

    • @raapyna8544
      @raapyna8544 Před 4 měsíci

@@darkacadpresenceinblood I also feel that way sometimes about just uni in general... My parents and teachers always encouraged me to study hard subjects and said I was good at them, but never trusted my art skills. It hurt because music was my passion, and my dad especially admires others artists that made music from a young age, but he never encouraged me to do it. Now music feels like a thing I try to cram into my schedule and learn as an adult, and it's hard. Yet I used to be 'gifted' at it as a child... Maybe I'll have to take some music theory lessons at some point on my own.
About the uni, I discovered I have adhd in uni after struggling a lot with my schedules in highschool and since then sort of went 'oh...' it sort of explains why I gravitated towards practical careers in stead of academic ones, even though I was 'smart' enough. Time will tell if this major was right for me and if I'll end up getting a job in it. :)

I lived in Germany for a couple of years, and the Germans explained that they often have their set of friends since young childhood and that's it- those are the friends they have. Even just saying hello (in German, of course) to my neighbors, I was often ignored. It can be hard to 'break into' their culture. I had a German friend that once she knew me, introduced me to her friends and that was great. I also found my way 'into' my neighborhood by helping out during a potluck - finding the right time and place to make connections makes a difference. They are lovely people, just hard to make friendships there as an adult.

At some point if you don't have that automatic "in" - children - it can be difficult to find friends.
You don't relate to parents, they can't just drop stuff and hang out because they are caring for their kids, so it makes it hard to find the time to catch up.
Getting out and dedicating time to a hobby outside of your house (like a sport or a interest group) is the best way to find friends but even then...

Friends, and I suspect, German boyfriends, and in your case, fans, compensate when parents fall short. I'm a fan living in California and want to tell you that I'm so proud of you. You are incredibly accomplished and have such a wonderful, warm, fun personality. Thank you for sharing your life, humor, journey, and this video recap of this past year.
Your CZcams stats somehow made me tear up, because they represent a lot of intelligence, creativity, and hard work. You demonstrate considerable intelligence by being aware of the mental health aspects, and the balance as well as the preservation of your relationship with German Boyfriend! Thank you for setting the example and for being honest about what you see, and your experience!
My daughter and I just received our visas to live in Spain long term, and your video offered an interesting perspective about the personal growth one can achieve by integrating into another culture (which I expect for us, but it was nice to hear your perspective).
It seems that much of your experience in Germany has offset some of the things in Vietnam that aren't as functional or useful in the life you hope to live and are naturally attracted to. It is beautiful to know that you have come from a more emotionally closed culture (or family) to one that is allowing you to blossom and be more free to be who you want to be. As an american, I always had the impression that Germans were more reserved than Americans. But you have given me the impression that Germans in general are more open and progressive in this way than at least most of the Americans that I know! Obviously it's not good to generalize. People are people wherever you go, but I love to hear that you've grown in these ways and have made new discoveries and possibly changes that allow for you to live life more happily - and with a man, friend and partner who clearly adores you and supports you.
So for what it's worth, I am very proud of you and admire the choices you've made that have led to liberty, love, happiness, and adventure in your life in spite of the hardships that we all collectively face as modern people. Keep going. You're clearly loved by the public. We're rooting for you and German Boyfriend! ❤️

You can get an Australian visitor visa very easily online regardless of the Vietnamese passport. It’s even easier if you have a family member there who can offer you accomodation. The visa is valid for a year and you can go in and out as many times as you like providing each stay is no longer than 3 months.

Frohes neues Jahr, Uyen und deutscher Freund.
Here's what I learned after a decade of living abroad (I immigrated from Germany to the US): You really, really have to be into both your relationship *and* your new home.
Life is already a bumpy ride. And keeping a relationship healthy is hard work. If the people and culture around you are a bad fit, it will just add unnecessary stress.
I can't imagine living anywhere but the US anymore. I fit here better than I ever did in Germany and it makes so many aspects of my life easier. Missing your family and sometimes being a little bit homesick is offset by living in the here and now that you fully love and embrace.
Take your time deciding; I'm sure German Boyfriend and you will stay together regardless of which country you end up living in. If Germany is the best fit for both of you, good. If not ... then don't be afraid to stretch your wings. Who knows, you can always live a couple of years in Germany, then move to somewhere else and just keep looking until you find your favorite home.

Uyen, as an Indonesian, I may need to defend Bali a little bit, if you don't mind. I went to Vietnam, so I will also include a little bit of comparison). When you said that Bali is crowded, it is indeed true. So my suggestion would be for you to plan a holiday during the low season (avoid June-August and near the NYE). And if you like some quiet, please go to Ubud. Unless you are more of a beach person, Ubud is perfect for you to do some yoga, eat well, hike, and explore arts. Regarding the food, you are Vietnamese right, so I guess you are familiar with spicyness. If you want to eat some locals food, don't go for street food, because you have been germanized. Go to a nice Indonesian restaurant, you can find many in Denpasar. If you're craving for seafood like the ones in DaNang, then you may like the seafood in Jimbaran. And to end my comments, we (Indonesia) have a lot of other places that you can go to, which are way better than Bali. To name some: Wakatobi, Derawan, Banda Neira, Labuan Bajo, Sumba, etc.

I love you so much! I enjoy each post, as someone who has also immigrated and struggling with learning the culture (while loving it) I'm so proud of you! Sometimes parents don't want us to be disappointed and they say 'don't dream so high' but everyone loves encouragement, sometimes we need to say 'just listen so I can rant and not give advice!' keep going! It's actually a good thing for you and boyfriend to keep 'jobs' separate, you do the most important things together!

Simply Amazing! ❤So proud of you Uyen for your degree and all your success on your channel! I have a masters in nursing and I speak English and it was a challenge. You have really set an example for others of what can be achieved even if difficult. You never gave up! Your experience in school is of use for so many different reasons whether you use the degree right now or not. I used to help people work on their career and academic goals and lots of people who had English as their second language wanted to get their degrees to show their kids they could do it too. You have such a large platform and no doubt have inspired the millions who have watched you. I bet if you wrote down all of your accomplishments you would be blown away. What you have shared is only a small fraction of all of your accomplishments.
As far as your channel, I have said this before, but you bring joy to me because I spent 6 years in Germany as a child and they were the best days of my life. Dad was in the military. So the food, stores, clothes, etc., bring me the warm fuzzies. Don't be disheartened about your parents and the lack of affirmation. You have a million people who are doing that for you and who recognize your talent and worth and who have great respect for you. Your parents love you in the way they know how based on their upbringing and culture and your culture is a big part of who you are. It helped make you the wonderful person that you are and now you are getting a taste of other cultures and are so well rounded. All of this will make you more empathetic, relatable, and encouraging to others. Just love you Uyen. Sorry for the long comment but this video and your accomplishments warranted lots of love and kudos!

Also, no you dont need to br a pro to do youtube, a lot of people that are successful now were completely horrible at making videos. For example MrBeast. He has 215 million subscribers but if you look at his older videos they are terrible! So its ok even if you are not a pro ❤

Hi Uyen, I'm American married to a Taiwanese for 17 years and i feel like I'm in your future :)
Like you guys I'm very chill and she's very stressed out by nature. It's tolerable when your relationship is young but over time it has become more and more difficult and i feel like we are growing apart. She also studied in America and works in a high stress job, so that contributes too.
So it's important to understand that as you move forward in your relationship with German boyfriend, that things don't stay the same as they are now and your differences don't go away and in fact become more annoying over time. There will be a day when the things you think are cute about German bf are going to really annoy you. It takes hard work and commitment to stay together for the long term. And if you have a child, you'll find out even more differences as he tries to raise her in the German way and you pull towards the VN way, and whatever differences exist are going to be magnified.
Love your content, it reminds me of our own immigrant experience and romance :)
