  • Turning old line fishing rubbish lead sinkers into dive weights for spearfishing, freediving and scuba diving.
I wanted to make this video to show you how easy it is to make lead dive weights at home. Hopefully it will encourage you to collect line fishing rubbish and turn it into something practical. Helping the marine environment and yourself in one action. Win win right?
So firstly please be careful when melting the lead it goes without saying how hot and damaging this could be. But the main thing i want to get at is to wear a proper mask.
If you are watching this video its because you probably do a form of diving.
Please please please take care of your lungs.

All fish were of legal size and were speared for consumption, I have a NSW Fishing Licence and abide by catch size limits, daily takes and no fish zones. Over the past 5 years now I have made the commitment to no longer buy fish, so I only eat the fish i catch. Spearfishing is the most sustainable form of fishing on the planet, it is also the most environmentally friendly form of fishing.

As a hunter and fisherman in the united states I have to say no other food harvesting activity compares in exploration, variety, action, physical skill, knowledge, beauty, danger, accomplishment and naturalism as spear fishing and harvesting from coral reefs and tropical seas. You are truly blessed

Good on ya Sam! Great use of some of the garbage you removed from the ocean. It's worth keeping the lures, hooks, tackle etc that is still in ok nick. You can put little kits together and sell them off. You'd never make a living from it, but it's not a bad little perk since you're there anyway. My partner and I bought our coffee machine off trash we collected from the ocean. Also, some of the lures work well on a home-made flasher. The swivels are also very useful for this.

This was a great tutorial, thanks mate. I'm a diver of the non-spearfishing variety - on the treasure hunting side of the fence - but given I'm pulling a couple dive weight's worth of lead out with every single hunt, I figured it was time to do something about it! Cheers.

Not as much lead in the Water over here, less people. But the local tyre shop provides us with a heap of lead wheel weights. More impurities but as you showed it all scapes off.

That's awesome! Funnily enough when I was younger we use to get scrap lead from tyre places and pour our own sinkers, which I'm sure we got snagged on reef and lost, and now you come along and turn it into dive weights thus completing the lead lifecycle 😂😂 I'd be keen on a part 2 showing how to coat them as well!

Great video once again with more details and safety considerations than just chucking the lead in a pot. Been collecting old sinkers for years and also looking forward to the coating video. Have just bought the spray plastidip to try but be good to see what you do
