    I’m generally on board with saying sock shoe sock shoe is a silly way to use it on shoes but I did it the other day and realized there is a context where it’s less odd. I was changing from sandals to shoes in my car so I was keeping my foot on the ground for stability and doing one foot at a time. Which reminds me, if I’m changing in a bathroom, i want as little contact between my foot and the floor so I do sock shoe sock shoe for good reason. I’m disturbed that you all have invaded my thoughts so thoroughly. All the best

    But in all of this, the KEY take away coming from an Orthopedic Surgical Nurse's perspective, total joint replacements are 99% from patients having a history of a sedentary lifestyle and/or obesity, NOT FROM RUNNING!! 🏃‍♀️ So get out there and at least get off the couch and move!!! ❤

    • @Ohtaror

      Or do they have a sedentary lifestyle because of bad hips?

    • @sarh23
      @sarh23 Před 10 dny

      The people I know who've had knee replacements have all been sporty. All of them used to play rugby except one who used to play soccer, and they moved to running or cycling later. It seems to be the rugby that did it.
      It's also notable that most of these people were inactive in the year leading up to their knee replacements, but that was only after the pain became bad enough to make it very hard to exercise, which was the only reason they were put forward for the knee replacements. I am wondering if you're judging people on what they're saying their recent activity was when they come for the knee replacement instead of on what their long term lifestyle has been like.
      I know there are many inactive people getting joint replacements, but I just don't see it being 99%, if it is I'd love to see a study showing that

      @@sarh23 In the US, osteoarthritis is increased by obesity for sure. I more or less, am referring to an older population. And there are other factors such as, previous injury to the joint (i.e. sports, trauma), age and even genetics. I don't judge, only statistically speaking that in those patients we have taken care of who needed total knee replacements, had not been active for years and did not have a history of high impact sports. Most cases, the patients BMI is too high when first seen in the clinic by the Doctor. The BMI has to be below 39, and some require less than that, in order for surgeons to even consider doing surgery because there are too many risks post-operatively and not having successful outcomes in Physical Therapy. Yes, I myself am an athlete and would have needed a total knee replacement in my early 40's if I did not have a lateral retinacular release arthroscopy done on my knee in my early 30's, I would have needed a total knee replacement or partial replacement in my early 40's, but....I had to stay proactive and stay on top of instabilities in and around my knee with extensive PT. Part of that was not working on my TFL, glute medius, hips and my genetics. But I worked hard and now 15 years after surgery, my knee has zero issues. It is all a case by case basis.
      Total joint replacements for hips and knees have many different factors in younger vs older adults. But with that said, obesity will accelerate the processs, especially osteoarthritis. There are numerous articles that one can find statistically speaking, on younger adult causitive factors vs older adults (geriactric) in regards to any total joint replacement. Again, no judging because we all come from different backgrounds, have different cultures, have different pain tolerances, but we also can be accountable for oursleves and be our own advocate, being proactive and staying informed.

  • @AGDaws
    @AGDaws Před měsícem +3

    One additional point for the knee science bit - there was a recent study (cited by Frederik Zillen on his CZcams channel a couple of months ago) that found heavier runners put less force through their knees than lighter runners because their mechanics are different and they generally aren’t running as fast. So lowering BMI is not likely to decrease the stress on your knees as Rick suggested - in fact it’s the opposite. You are more likely to go harder as you get lighter, and put more force through your knee joints.

    On the topic of knees, I hurt my left knee as a kid and it was unstable for well over a decade. It would occasionally go out on me if I pivoted wrong, leaving me sore for days or weeks. Since I started running regularly 8 years ago it's given me no issues. 👍

      I tried that, without success. Switching to low or zero-drop shoes reduced the strain on my knees and increased my calf strain. Caused some DOMS, but manageable.

    Hoka makes a goretex clifton. Just be aware with goretex if water gets in over the top of your shoe it has nowhere to drain.

    Please, please, please don't see your GP about your knee pain. A physio (preferably sports based) has the best expertise to diagnose and advise you.
    If they think you have osteoarthritis or inflammation they will signpost you to your doctor.
    Speaking as a GP who did her first marathon with anterior knee pain and was cured by an excellent physio. To be clear, a good physio is a god. Stick with them.

    Rick -- the BMI is trash. Not to mention, plenty of people run without losing weight. I always trust you guys to be inclusive of all runners, including us fat ones. Please reconsider how you talk about this.

    People think running hurts the knees because they go from sedentary to running and DISCOVER the weakness or injury caused by being sedentary.
