    I started running 14 months ago in age 39. After one month of random runs, I purchased Garmin watch and used a workout plan to prepare to half marathon. It took 15 weeks and my result was 1:52 in my first official race. I must say, I was pretty satisfied with the training process, I was working hard, but without overtraining or injuries. The variety was also pretty good, not boring at all.
    After that I used suggested runs after I set the next half marathon race date. I think those were more various in terms of different types of workouts, but less systematic if you would say. However, there were also phases, like base phase, tapering before the actual race etc. Again, satisfying experience as well as the previously used "workout plan". My performance became better.
    I cannot choose which of those two options was better though. Both felt good enough and helped me progressing without injuries and overtraining.

    I attested the effectiveness of the suggested workouts, it really improved my running!!! I returned last year to run after self-imposed pandemic break, since December 2022; I followed 90% all suggestions from my watch to run half marathon on July 2023, and I improved a lot; not with my best time ever but I felt great on the race. I took a break sometimes on easy runs and I do some cycling instead, but even in cycling the suggestions come handy and the watch suggested rides at a specific power and time. It is super effective if you put a goal race event and pace along with it, and using the watch to track down your sleep and your rest periods as well

    I've been using the daily suggested workouts for 6 months now and have seen some steady improvements. Initially, as an older runner and "listening to internet advice", I forced myself to never run more than 3 days in a row, notwithstanding what my watch was suggesting. However, encouraged by a comment on reddit, I took the plunge about two months ago and just listened to my watch. I am now running 6 or 7 days a week, and never really feel overly tired. I have a 2 hr 19 minutes long run scheduled in two days. As for your PB: I commented on an earlier video when you mentioned your goal and stated that, based on what was shown as recommended pace for your base runs (and comparing with mine), I didn't think that a PB was in the cards for you; I think you will run 51:30, about one minute shy of your PB. I hope that I am wrong and wishes you the best of luck!

    I have used it for three races this year although I modified it for the marathon block in the spring as the longest run wasn’t long enough as I wanted to run at least one run over 20 miles. Two out of three PB’s and the half marathon was incredibly hilly so would probably have been a PB if flat.
    On your training it seemed a bit sparse on the speed work but as you ran most days you should hopefully pb.

    I used the race widget and daily suggestions to prepare for my first half marathon (starting from couch potatoe). I've had almost 7 months to train, and it went quite well.
    I live in a hilly area, so I've set up my suggestions to use heart rate instead of pace. This worked ok with 2 caveats. I had to make sure my HR zones were set up correctly (I have a pretty low HR overall. The standard formulas just don't work. Had to do a guided lactate threshold test and set up the zones based on that). Second one is that I would change the setting to be pace based for VO2 max workouts (It was impossible to pace myself correctly for a 2 or 3 minute interval near my HRmax. I would start off too quickly to increase HR, then die off exhaustion after 60-90 seconds).
    Also, leading up to a race i did not believe I could do what I wanted, which is to finish in under 2 hours. The required 5:36 second pace just seemed impossible after all the easy runs. Turned out it was possible and I've finished in 1:58:48 :)
    Oh, and the last thing - I was used to running to my HR, but I had to remove it from my data screens during the race. Because of all the excitement I was in the red zone for the entire time. If I had seen that during the race I would probably slow down thinking I can't keep it up.

      @dresden_slowjog Před 7 měsíci

      Serious question: Can one choose heartrate over pace guidance with Garmin plans? I don't use Garmin, I use POLAR's program which is essentially heart rate zone based with 80 per cent easy zone 1/2 (rarely intermediate 3) and 20 per cent higher heart rate zones 4/5 spiced up with core, strength, dynamic and static mobility seshs if one ticks this option. I love my HR based training. With a heart condition all those pace-based doesn't make any sense for me. 😮

But it's ten more weeks to go and the Garmin Coach is still optimistic. My pulse went down over the last months where I smashed my 5k from 30 to 24 minutes, so I should hit this 10k target and improve the 5k along the way
