    Short, sweet and to the point. I agree, protecting the frame is of the utmost importance with Toyota’s. It’s ashame that the manufacturer doesn’t do a better job with this especially knowing the history. It was interesting, that you had several examples at the dealership of bad frames. Thankfully, I don’t live in the rust belt so rust isn’t as common.
    Great job!

    Woolwax and Fluid Film user here. Have been doing it on my FJ since new in 2011 and my 4R since new in 2018. Worth the effort! I’m in New England. Sold the FJ in 18’ and frame looked brand new and always sat outside. I also use a good coating of Woolwax on my off road wheels during the winter, they’ll look a tad dirty but come spring wash time lthey ook new, and have been protected. Lanolin products great investment (time and money) for long term protection.

    Good video-I live in NH and purchased a 2023 white 40th year 4Runner and I had the dealership put waxoyl treatment to the undercarriage before I picked it up, that is another great product endorsed by all auto makers-anyone that lives in the rust belt should treat their undercarriage- the treatment cost was 850 dollars and is guaranteed for the life of the vehicle-not cheap but worth it!!

    Main thing is to hose down the underside after winter. Get rid of the salt. Inspect sand and apply POR15. Most owners never bother to go underside. But they will put a million coats of wax on the paint.

    • @JoeBuck-uc3bl
      @JoeBuck-uc3bl Před 2 měsíci +1

      An underside treatment is a moist barrier, that’s supposed to stay moist (an be reapplied at certain intervals). Hosing down the underside is to be avoided if you get these treatments done, you’re washing your barrier off!! Hosing and cleaning salt off the underside is a better move for people who do not get oil based treatments done though.

    Wholeheartedly agreed! One of the first things I did when I got my FJ was to wire brush the surface rust and liberally coat the frame inside and out with Surface Shield. It was a messy, tedious job, but I feel so much better knowing I've got the frame treated against further rust.

    ugh!!! just bought a new 4 Runner and guess I should have done more research. paint protection because it sits outside and now rustproofing because I live in Pa. I've been reading on forum everyone's opinion. not being mechanically inclined I was thinking of having a line-x place do it as there is one in York pa which is close. I will call tomorrow to get a price. However, I am being told that I should remove the spare tire and skid plate. Ummm no. also being told that depending on the person doing the work they may or may not do these things and perhaps strip a bolt since they work on time. this is all very depressing as I was just looking forward to 10-15 years of happy driving without all the extra worrisome details of frame rust and do it myself work and preparation. oh well. thanks for your video and wish you luck and fun in your truck. I didn't notice if you removed your skid plate or not, but you are far more experienced than a retired teacher in these things. I do not know how or even want to remove the spare tire as I know there will be a problem arise in that procedure.

    My car has been Krown sprayed every year since new. It’s a 2018. I still notice a little bit of rust along seams etc. but overall it’s pretty damn clean.

      The main disadvantage of any solid undercoating is that if water finds a way under the coating it will hold it in and speed up the rust and you won’t notice it until it fails structurally as the linex will hide it. Always go fluid

  • @ashresearcher

    Fluid film is better. It automatically fills in holes caused by road debris scratching the bottom since it’s a liquid

    I ordered my 22 TRD Off Road Premium exactly the way I wanted it. Only took five weeks to the day for it to come from Japan! Now I have 10500 miles on it so after Iwatched your video I decided to do the same including treating all the body and frame cavities with the VG 101 product and with the VG 160 undercoating.
    Hanover Offroad in Hanover Pa. did mine and I couldn't be happier. They removed the spare tire, TRD skid plate, and wheels and covered everything that wasn't supposed to get sprayed. Real professional job!
    My question is what about all the factory frame holes? My frame has 65 factory holes that I can see! Is there a reason for this? Let water escape and evaporate? I've read there is a plug kit from Toyota for $50 but I doubt there's enough plugs in one kit to do them all.
    What are your thoughts in regard to your 2022?

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  Před rokem

      Good question, not entirely sure why all the holes. There is a plug kit that will cover most of them. Which I will do once I treat the inside with CRC. Made a video on this:

      Here’s what I know:
      -it’s called Valugard PF Undercoating VG-104
      -it’s black wax-based formula which seals the underside
      -Special Additives provide superior adhesion and resilience

    I got a better idea. I’m gonna buy a cheap sacrificial piece of crap vehicle…and my 4Runner will never ever ever be exposed to road salt. I will always refuse to drive it until after the first rainfall after roads have been salted. If Sammy Mayday Malone can refuse to drive his Corvette at high noon…then I could refuse to expose my “Forever 4Runner” to salt!
    That’s not all, the sacrificial piece of crap will also routinely share the mileage and keep the 4Runner mileage lower. It will be used for trips in congested areas with tight parking spots, and/or shady areas (in either case, situations where there’s a heightened possibility that it’ll get dinged or messed with). It will be much better on gas, so I’ll save money that way at least.
    AND I’m still gonna get the frame coated with an oil based treatments!!
