Here’s to a new year all! So excited to be going into it with you guys! Make to sure vote in the song poll on the community tab! Cheers!! 🙌🏻🔥
How did this song get in a poll with funk songs? Is it because the band is black except for Burdon??
Happy New Year y'all! This is an unusual song. Would have been my 3rd pick on the poll, but it's a good song. I've always enjoyed it. Hope y'all enjoyed it. We'll find out in a little bit, right? I'm not real familiar with their catalog. Only heard the songs they played on the radio, so I don't have any recommendations for any more War tunes, but I'd urge you to check out the Sly Stone and Curtis Mayfield tunes before too long. Cheers!
Hey guys thanks for putting out on the holidays..... You will like it.... Very different.... Keep em coming and dont spill the whiskey (Alex)
This is Eric Burdon and War not War.
Such a great song... still crank it when it comes on the radio. Excellent choice, guys! Here's something I just found - "The chorus alternates between "DIG THAT GIRL" then "TAKE THAT PEARL". the song idea concept came from literally spilling the wine on the keyboard that they used in the studio. The girl speaking Spanish was Eric Burden's g/f at the time, they set up a TENT in the studio, and when she and Eric were doing their thing in it, they recorded what she said to lay over the studio track. "DIG" is a hippie euphamism for "like" ;the "PEARL" is of course a sexual reference to a womans anatomy. The rest (leaking gnomes, green grass) comes from lyrics that Eric was already working on when the song came together. The song in toto is a celebration of the beauty of all women.
Source"Harold Brown" drummer for War in an interview "
Found it here: songmeanings.com/songs/view/17749/
9 out of 10 overfed long-haired leaping gnomes would approve of this pick.
The tenth, being a day late and a dollar short, was unable to vote on time. ; ^ )
😆😆😆
hahahahahahhaha!!!
Lmao!!🤣
xxxactly right ! ! !
In 1970 you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing this. And I never got tired of it. Love this song.
I was going to say that very thing! The summer after 11th grade for me, it was always on!
I'm not sure if they know how big this song was at the time...
I was born that November '70, already dancing to this song. Lol
It seems like it was played in the summer quite a big. Love it!
Listen to “Cisco Kid” by War. I remember my brother buying that single when it was released.
"Was a Friend of Mine" Twist up another!
One of the first 45s I ever owned!
Cisco Kid? was a friend of mine ! :-)
@natone Stew Yes! 👌 I love Cisco Kid, cool ah. And I checked... They hv Not done it yet. Spill ThatWine and Cisco Kid gives me Cheech and Chong vibes. Lol. 🎵 One is silly, groovy cool.. and the other is bad ass cool. 😎. Love the variety of instruments, grooves, vocals and stories... They hv it all.
@@tjtampa214 , yes to the Cheech and Chong vibes, which makes me think that these guys should do "Basketball Jones"!
Great song. There was something about the 70s that seemed to produce an endless array of creative and diverse songs. Sure, 80s and 90s had their moment, but 70s is chock full of genius.
Indeed! My Lord 70s King!
the 60s were
More War, Cisco Kid, Low Rider, Slipping into Darkness, Why Can't we be Friends!
Pretty much the best of cd.
All Day Music is a classic Summertime jam
'Slipping into to Darkness' is a definite classic.
@@robertgrubb746 So is their song "Summer" :)
I’ll add Me And Baby Brother
WAR is such an under-appreciated band. I've always loved this song.
And their band had like 14 people in it of all nationalities. You can hear Latin/Caribbean influences throughout their music.
One of the coolest bands of the seventies.
PLEASE do "Cisco Kid"!!!!
Happy New Year to you and your families!!!
Agree! Love this band. Yessss! Cisco Kid!!
Cisco Kid, Slippin' Into Darkness, All Day Music, lots of great stuff in their catalog.
This version (Eric Burdon and War) had eight guys in it. One white guy from England, one white guy from Denmark, and six black guys from the US.
The white guy from Denmark was harmonica player Lee Oskar, who went on to record some jazz harmonica albums. I bought & still have some of them.
Lead singer of the animals
Andy is saying "It's not everyone's bag, man, but I'm hip to the scene and I dig his rap."
Alex just don't get it...
Lol
rofl - the language of my childhood. I didn't understand a damned thing the teenagers were talking about.
@Nacho Slave I dig the way you say that. Haha.
Alex is a square man.
"And I was walking down the street...to a Starbucks...but not THIS one...let's go to THAT one...And to the counter...came a lady...she whispered in my ear...something crazy...she said...
Spell your name, I'll get it wro-ong...Spell your name, I'll get it wro-ong...get it wro-o-ong..."
WELL done, Sir!
LOL okay, you win ... if not the whole Internet, at the very least this reaction thread :-D
"Alright! That's it for me. Goodnight
everybody!" (Leaves on a George Costanza high-note...)
Best thing I’ve read in a long time! 👏👏👏
Whoa! I can unfollow now. It will never be better.
Don't overthink the lyrics. Just get into the groove.
lyrics?? lol
Eric Burdon has an incredible voice. He ranked 57th on the Greatest Singers of All Time in a 2008 Rolling Stone magazine poll...and it shows.
Try no mans land with Eric Burdon and Tony Carey. I can't remember the lady's name.
Rolling Stone thinks Sgt. Pepper is the greatest rock album of all time and it's not even rock and it's not even a Top 5 Beatles album.
2 great songs. Day In The Life and She's Leaving Home.
Neither even resembles rock & roll.
I think my all-time favorite Eric Burdon song is "Sky Pilot," with "Monterey" a close second (both while he was still fronting The Animals).
@@ETBrenner
"Three days of understanding

@@3DThrills Can't disagree with you there (about Sgt Pepper) but even a broken clock is correct twice a day.
In the live version, Eric actually sings, and it's a hoot to watch all of them. He has a huge stage presence.
I saw Eric in 2016. He was still great.
70’s song you had to be in that era to understand, incredible song
This song has a catchy killer vibe. Classic tune for sure.
Alex, if you're walking down the street you want to be listening to "Low Rider."
Haha I guess you’re right
@@andyandalex I agree, that is an awesome, awesome song. Cool as heck. 😎💯
the best 'walking' song is 'Hey Joe' by Lee Moses
This song has an urban vibe. I understand why this tune would come to mind while walking down the street in a big city, but I would think twice about singing it as loudly as Eric does. Thanks guys.
@@wasfazed Lee Moses wasn't even on my radar. I checked him out on Spotify and agree -excellent walking song. Thanks for the tip, Was!
Growing up from in LA, it's hard to imagine there are people who have never heard this song.
I think the words grass and pearl are the keys to unlocking the song's meaning.
"Put da Lime in da coconut and mix it all UP"
another classic song in the same exact vibe
It’s very helpful in understanding this ‘song’ is that it was written on a planet, far far away.
This is factual.
A blue planet where they speak Spanish.
😂
@@susanklasinski1805 That was COOL- I enjoyed your comment☺
Both?
You don't have to be high to listen to this song, but it helps...
😂
It's been a long, long time... But Absolutely! (from back then, I hv no idea what's out there now).
Was when I first heard it and I am now. Dat a lot of years and a lot of weed
@@jeffreyflynn9106 The 70s must have been awesome. So many people were smoking bud even back then.
This is a "we're hosting a house party and 10 people are already there laughing with drinks in their hands and more people are walking in smiling" song.
Hard facts
Man I was at that party. Digging on that girl. Spilled her some wine and she showed me her pearl.
This is the kind of song that leaves a lifelong impression on you. Whenever u hear it it immediately takes you back to that time you first heard it. You remember the setting, the smells, the girls all of it vividly. One of the few songs that trigger those visceral memories. Short, iconic, mesmerizing! You had to be there
The song is about sex, fellas. Your minds aren't dirty enough.
Hey, Lucie. That's what I thought. Some say it's about heroin. I guess it's up for discussion. Happy New Year, all the best.
@@lisamorrison2149 I just saw that! I guess either make sense! Happy new year to you!
Especially if you lay down in a field of tall grass and a girl says "spill that wine, grab that pearl"
Remember - these are the guys that thought "Slow Ride" was about driving.
Dude, it's totally about junk.
Spill the wine: blood drawn into the syringe to test it's in the vein
Take that pearl: heroin i.e. the "pearl of the orient"
I felt the flames at my back: the rush of the hit
She had a tall glass; poured the wine into the glass: again, syringe, blood
LOL. "What part of that don't you get? Don't overthink it."
"... to think that me, a long haired overfed leaping gnome, should be the star of a Hollywood movie"
I mean... is that a great line or what!?😅 This is just a fun song guys. A classic for sure. A gift to the stoner generation. Can't believe it was 1970! Sheesh!! You really need to check out some WAR. Their album "The World is a Ghetto" ruled the summers of the early 70s, especially in urban areas like NYC, Chicago, DC as Alex alluded to. "Low Rider" "Why Can't We Be Friends" "Cisco Kid", the title song. These guys were an amazing fusion of Latin/soul and a little rock. Very vibey. Saw them in a funky smoky bar on the North side of Chicago one night in the '80s and they just jammed all night long. A guy named Lee Oscar blows a mean harmonica and helped give them a hugely distinctive instantly recognizable sound.
These guys were just fun and not a group you would go to for deep meaningful lyrics. Your observation that it is a gift to the stoner generation was dead on.
@@dennisvincent94 a lot of their lyrics were just a goof lyrically: "I know you're working for the CIA
, They wouldn't have you in the ma-fi-a" ("Why Can't we be Friends"). It's all about that groove. That's not to say they couldn't get into some serious latin-soul-jazz grooves when they wanted to.
@@flubblert Their music was unique and awesome. I really like their goofy lyrics too but I’m a child of the 60s and 70s which some would say is the stoner generation.
@@dennisvincent94 yep... for sure Dennis.
Lee Oskar rules! He makes awesome harmonicas...blows Honers away!
I saw Eric Burdon and War in concert in 71. Fabulous!!! "I was laying in a field in tall Mexican grass"
“Spill the wine, take that pearl.” Oh yes, THAT pearl!
Eric Burden is a force of nature. War is a great band in their own right. Check out “Me and Baby Brother” a great tune.
ah okay, I see now. Pearl is a euphemism for the "canoe boat driver" or "man in the boat" or "butterbean" ?
Eric Burdon, not Burden.
Heh. It is actually even more visceral - it is about deflowering a virgin (not simply sex). Picture a dead Muslim martyr faced with his 72 virgins (and now allowed to drink).
Definitely a cool tune
@@tanstaafl1301 Exactly.
Slippin into darkness, Summer, All day music.... so many sweet jams from these dudes. Cisco Kid is a banger too! Delve deep my friends...
This is a fun, long jam, but the best War song is “The World is a Ghetto” (long version).
Why do people always have to rank things. War has a lot of great songs. Why rank?
@@Frankincensedjb123 Yeah, STOP RANKING! Besides everyone knows "Cisco Kid" is the better of the two songs! 😂
@@radar0412 🤣👏🏼
YES!!!
"The World is a Ghetto" AND "Cisco Kid"!
The story in the song is like a crazy dream, it makes no sense. That's what I always got from it. Just a dream with a really groovy tune.
Its about sex
To me, this is a great chill song for a backyard party - or in a pandemic, a party of 1 ☺️
A charming stoner classic. And ... the thing that makes War's sound so unique was pairing harmonica with saxophone. Inspired.
Definitely two distinctly different versions of “War” with Eric and without. I love the band! Low Rider is certainly worth listening to as well as Why Can’t We Be Friends, The World is a Ghetto, Cisco Kid, All Day Music. They put out several killer albums, including a live album.
All you British People... we won.
*The Beatles and Jethro Tull sitting in the background*
And a Zeppelin t-shirt.
Yes, we won and made all the British groups have to come here to get super famous 😁
@@alrivers2297 : But back in the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies, most of the huge bands were British.
God save the Queen! (even though I'm not British)
Meaning???
Eric Burden is English. Am I missing something? 😁
I always thought that the chorus was "Spill that wine, DIG THAT GIRL". Makes more sense to me even now.
I think A&A need the lyrics. Because the chorus may alternate, dig the girl, take the pearl lol
We sang 'dig that girl' 😉
Lol....Reminds me of my old farmer dad looking at a Picasso. "What the fuck is that about?" It's art, man. Just because ya don't get it doesn't mean it isn't valid. I don't understand Einstein's math but doesn't mean its bullshit. It was experimental Latin fusion with psychedelic rock. That was a thing back then with Santana n' the gang and it was pretty fuckin' cool.
FACTZ! 🔥
Interesting fact: War's show at Ronnie Scott's Club in London on September 18, 1970, is historically notable for being the last public performance for Jimi Hendrix, who joined them onstage for the last 35 minutes of Burdon and War's second set; a day later he was dead.
Eric Burden spanned the early rock era with “House of the Rising Sun” My brother loved listening to “We Gotta Get Outta This Place” during his time in Viet Nam. I think the troops sang it together.
Really enjoyed the reaction, Gents. "Don't overthink it", it's just a fun and funky song. I heard this a lot when it came out, now I might put it on every couple years or so. "Cisco Kid" "Low Rider" "The World is a Ghetto" are all good ones. Happy New Year Andy & Alex and to all the A & A family! Peace and Cheers!
You guys oughta try out the SONG "War" by Edwin Star. I'd love to see you have your minds blown listening to that one the first time.
Yes!!
4 REAL!
I can't imagine anyone not liking this song, such a great tune 👍
This is just plain fun 😊
such a cool song
Cisco Kid is another great one from War
War's "The World is a Ghetto" is one of their best musical pieces. "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burden (Long Version) is his tribute to the soldiers of the Vietnam War.
Extended version of The World is a Ghetto. Saxalicious.
"Grass" as in weed, dope etc.... is the operative word here..lol... Correct ..don't over think it..lol.... it's a brilliant song, love the flute, the whole thing...listen to it again, and just let it flow over you.
We have this album and I can attest it’s a great one to listen to on a lazy Sunday morning while cooking breakfast and drinking coffee and slowly getting acquainted with the day. “Summer” is one of my faves on the album.
"Slippin' into Darkness" is the next War song! You got to do it!
Yes! It has to be the LONG version!
Yes, absolutely.
War was KINDA Big in the 70s
My goodness. These guys have yet to scratch the surface of the wealth of songs that have altered the planet. Huge songs that weave the fabric of time. By all means, though, let’s bust it the full catalog of songs by War. Man, let’s play all of their great songs, I’m sure these guys have ten minutes to kill to please you guys...
For this one guys...you REALLY should have checked out the live video! It seriously bumps the song into another dimension...
Beat my exact comment by 11 hours! Live Eric is transcendent! His funk and soul are unmatched by most singers
Yes, the live version is the best.
Yea! Honestly it’s the last time Eric was able to sing it well too. After...he just couldn’t match.
Cheech and Chong movie, "Up In Smoke" War is in the sound track.
Yeah. Hysterical!!
There's a reason Cheech likes War. I'm not sayin'. You're gonna have to find it yourself. Think about it over a shot of Tequila and hit me back at this spot
Slipping Into Darkness ...
The World is a Ghetto...
🙌🙌Happy New Year! Song was sung by Eric Burdon of the Animals. Lots of good to explore either way. War has an extensive catalog. They were a barrier-breaking band, and had a wide diversity of fans. They were just...cool. Their music is a blend of soul, funk, latin rock, jazz, and they had a unique way of blending sax and harmonica. Low Rider should probably be the next War song, but The Cisco Kid is a solid alternate choice. If you want to hear more Animals, try Don't Bring Me Down, and a later track under the name Eric Burdon & the Animals - White Houses
Why Can't We Be Friends is a different kind of 70's tune. My eight year old self wants to see that reaction.
When I listen back to the old War catalog, It's amazing how well produced those albums were. And they had lots of hits in the 70s. The next song shall be Slippin' Into Darkness.
War was an incredible band. You should check out Me and Baby Brother, The Cisco Kid as well as The World is a ghetto! Lee Oskar is the Harmonica player on this song and was a key part of the War sound.
Leslie West, guitarist/singer of the group Mountain just died on Dec.23rd. How about Mountain's "Never In My Life" or "Theme From An Imaginary Western".
Theme For An Imaginary Western for sure.
@@markhaus2830 I'd pick their live version of 'Roll over Beethoven' - the most bangin' RnR ever, and greatest guitar tone ever
I'd add Nantucket Sleightride to that request list - the long version from Twin Peaks (album name, not the TV show). May be found elsewhere, I don't know their catalog well.
Saw them in Chicago…3 guys blasting on stage filling the arena with bass heavy grinds…Leslie West RIP
Low Rider has to follow this. It does when i play War.
This song is about feeling the moment. Euphoric self-awareness.
I recommend you guys watch "Dazed And Confused" (1993) a high school movie that captures the 1970's so perfectly , but the way how 70's rock music is mixed into some of the scenes is so Amazing .. kudos to the director .. staring Ben Affleck and Mathew McConaughey makes his film debut..
Tell me this is the live performance version where Eric almost eats the metal watch band or whatever that thing was. It’s fantastic
Has to be, and BETTER be...
These fellas never do videos. Their loss. 🤔
You would have been better to see the LIVE version, with the extra verse. Also, it was a story about a DREAM
Ya the live version
Yep!!
This has a sort of "spoken word jazz poetry" vibe. I'd love to hear Gil Scott-Hero do this.
I have loved this song from the moment I first heard it back in the day. As I recall this was Eric Burdon's first album after leaving The Animals, I could be wrong. I have never known anyone that didn't love this song. As for the lyrics he is describing his dream as he sleeps in the field. While dreams can often seem normal at the time but in retrospect they can be quite whack when repeated aloud. Their album "The World is a Ghetto" was a #1 album on Billboard in 1973. While it only had six songs they were all bangers. The Cisko Kid, Where Was You At, "City, Country, City", Four Cornered Room, The World is a Ghetto and Beetles in the Bog. I've worn out more than one copy of this album through the years.
Dudes, he was describing a dream. Note the dream like quality of the music and his narrative. The crazy thing she said was “spill that wine, take that pearl”......wish I had a dream like that.
Pretty sure that the "drug injection" theory has actually repeatedly been shot down. According to the drummer, the title came from the keyboard player spilling wine on the recording console, and that the song is about how all different types of women are beautiful
I noticed that, too...how all the women in the song were so different, but none were considered anything but beautiful.
Found y’all’s channel a few days ago and absolutely love it you guys ROCK!!!
The flute playing and percussion was the best part of this for me.
B-? I guess you had to be there... It was incredible when it came out and is still one of my favorite party songs. War is Funk.
War-The World is a Ghetto.
:)...Damn, I haven't thought of that song in a good 30 years...Thanks for the reminder. :)
Extended version. That is my favorite. Cisco Kid still makes me happy (and I'm an El Paso gal. War was big there.)
One of my favorites
As a 12 year old I couldn't get to the record store fast enough to pick this 45 up in the store. It was in the charts, pretty much inescapable on the radio, so it was only 69 cents, which was still a good portion of my allowance. I had to give up a couple of comic books and a pack of baseball cards to get it. It was such a cool tune, even though being 12 I had no idea what was being what was being discussed in the lyrics, it still sounded so smooth.
You've got to see the live version of this. Really puts it in context!
For War - Low Rider & Cisco Kid. Happy New Year Guys.
Slippin Into Darkness!!
Slippin into darkness,Cisco kid and The world is a ghetto are great songs. These guys combined Soul, latin, jazz and rock elements.Their harmonica player is Lee Oskar who has his own line of harmonicas sold in music stores.
Y’all two are outstanding!!! Happy new year’s
For your next War song, I suggest "Slippin' Into Darkness". "Cisco Kid" is my 2nd choice, and you should hear both songs eventually. I think it's better to have you react to a song that's completely new to you than one that you've heard part of, especially with a band like War that has several good options. "Spill the Wine" isn't a typical War song at all. I also hope you'll get back to Eric Burdon's previous band, The Animals, starting with "We Gotta Get Out of This Place". Happy new year, gents!
And "It's My Life."
This is definitely a groove of its own 🤘❤
Thanks for playing that one. Slippin’ into Darkness, Me and Baby Brother, Cisco Kid , All Day Music, Summer YOU WONT GO WRONG. Hearing this song in my preteen-years, I recall another huge hit by Donovan called Atlantis. Anyway, great job and Happy New Year fellaZ!
This is a PARTY song. You play this once the sun has set and everyone is getting loose. I fucking love this song, and have since I first heard it, when my uncles were playing it, when I was a child.
Can't wait to see this reaction.
Why can't we be Friends is an all hook song, Low Rider is a little more involved... 'Cisco Kid' is the one you want to hear tho
I love the groove of this song, B+ to A- for sure. Best wishes for a Happy and Brave New Year to you and yours!
Alex, the lyrics and delivery are very Beat Poet. If not familiar Google the term.
The initial idea came to Burdon when someone actually spilled wine on the console in the recording studio.
The lyrics I believe have a little more depth than ramblings. Partly a celebration of women.
@Andy & Alex -
Great fun!!! - This would have been a great song to truly analyze the lyrics and have you address them more...
"Spilling the Wine" was a slang term for the blood that dripped when you were doing the drugs.
From SongMeanings-
The chorus alternates between "DIG THAT GIRL" then "TAKE THAT PEARL". the song idea concept came from literally spilling the wine on the keyboard that they used in the studio. The girl speaking Spanish was Eric Burden's g/f at the time, they set up a TENT in the studio, and when she and Eric were doing their thing in it, they recorded what she said to lay over the studio track.
From Song Facts-
The chorus is often misheard, but the proper lyrics are "Spill the wine, take that girl, spill the wine, take that pearl." The "Pearl" is a sexual reference, meaning the clitoris.
More from SongMeanings-
Song Meaning: lying in a field of grass somewhere, Is passed out at a pot party. Spill the wine and take that pearl, Is breaking her hymen and taking her virginity.
Love your reviews!
M-
A cool collaboration but the real funk bangers are by groups like Sly and the Family Stone (I Want to Take You Higher) and the Temptations (Can't Get Next to You, Ball of Confusion.) You're barely dipping your toes in that water, nothing against this interesting and popular track.
Sly and the Family Stone was just wonderful. I loved every one of their songs.
I also love Sly and the Family Stone but don’t forget Parliament Funkadelic with George Clinton and Bootsie Collins❤️
"If You Want Me to Stay," is a song that makes me get my old fat butt up and move.
I'm shocked that Sly and the Family Stone don't get more attention from the reactors. Of course, soul and funk music generally seems to be relatively unexplored. I think these guys would love love love Sly, though.
The entirety of "Low Rider" is definitely worth hearing in its entirety, as is "Why Can't We Be Friends?".
Haven’t heard this in so many years! Thanks Guys!
Love this song. I hope you hear the full version, which has an extra verse.
A troublesome mistake they've made before. Did they ever hear the full length version of "Slow Ride?"
Andy's right. Don't overthink it. 😉
“Don’t overthink it.” Listen to this when you’re high. It’ll make sense.
When you’re 16 and you’re walking down the street you hear this for the first time on your transistor radio...it was like, “Oh, WOW! What’s this?!! “. It was cool BECAUSE it was so different! And that sound just moves through you. Yeah, it was like that. Short, because it was for radio play.
"Grazing in the Grass" by Hugh Masekela.
Oh, that's a nice one! Did you know that song was just a fun little jam, and they only put it on the album to fill up time? Funny how things work out...
Even My Country Loveing Mom like this tune. I have not met anyone that never enjoyed this one.
Howard Scott of War, who co-wrote this song, is a friend of ours. We all live in DFW. Howard is one of a kind, great man.
What I love about this song: It's evocative and uninhibited. They didn't care whether anyone liked it or not. Just having fun with a crazy idea, plus some great flute notes.
The World is a Ghetto...
"Very Latiny!"
Another A&A classic quote...
I remember as a kid of about 12 being in the car with my older brother and one of his friends. This song came on and his friend "Mike" knew all the words to this sang along. Kinda blew my mind. About 55 years ago✌🎶
Ironically I’ve been watching the live Beat Club version of this song quite a bit lately. Beat Club has so many great live performances.
Now Zeager and Evans- In the year 2525
That's curious, given the date I was half expecting a song by U2
One of their worst songs, only gets play once a year because of the title!
