Today I talk about the OGY Speakers from Closer Acoustics in Poland. These are tiny hand made gems with a single coaxial 4" driver that delivers pin point imaging and purity of vocals and instruments.
These do not go super low in the bass but that is not what these speakers excel at nor is it why they are so special. The OGY's forte is delivering an intimate performance that is scary real. It's like the VR of Audio.
I hope you enjoy the review!
Enjoy!

Its not a coaxial driver, its a full (wide) range driver. Coax has a tweeter in the middle, just like the kef ls50
You said it is a coaxial but it looks like single 'full range' driver? Does it have a crossover? If not it is a single driver. Coaxial means it is two drivers with one inside the other.
You are correct. Makes you question his technical acumen doesn’t it.
He admits in other videos I've seen that he doesn't have technical knowledge - kind of like 90% of audio reviewers.
Whizzer cone goodness
Polish composer Hania Rani goes perfectly with these speakers designed and made in Poland. Piano is very demanding instrument when it comes to music presentation Very nice review as always.
"Coaxial"? Doesn't that mean a tweeter at the center of a mid-woofer? I think what you're talking about is just a "single-driver" speaker.
Yup, whizzer cone
Ahh, yes you are right. My mistake. Even so, I believe most understood what I was saying. I have been messing with a few concentric/coaxial designs here lately and they all have a similar vibe so I just call them "coaxial".
Not coaxial but fullrange 5" drivers
Not full-range but wide-band 🤓
@@seanb3303- it is a full range driver, meaning it covers highs, mids and lows. The term does not imply it goes down as low in the bass as speakers with dedicated mid-range and/or bass drivers. You’re welcome.
@@mpi5850 in my world full range doesn’t start rolling off at 80hz 😀
@@seanb3303 your world is inperfect
@@betod63 that is your first correct statement 😉
I really like this review. I also like the times when you highlight some of the music that you listen to, or that you find interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
Fun review!
Beautiful Minion Speaker 😁 . Thanks for share yout knowledge and your awesome tracks recomendations. Regards from México.
If I ever upgrade from the GoldenEar BRX, it would be to the Borresen X1. Ogy would be my 2nd choice upgrade.
music source=Apple Music lossless
Try (Han-ja Runee). Amazing young contemporary pianist (singer) from Poland. Perfect match for these cute and probably amazing sounding full-range single driver speakers. 👏🏻
Theyre also doing an open baffle subwoofer that forms the stand...loks really nice, you should try it if you can.
Like the small size and look.
These would look (and probably sound) amazing with the Tri Art 35 watt class D amp that Thomas has been talking about. Especially with those bass stands. ✌️
They do sound best with the Daniel Hertz Maria I have here vs others, even tube. It's a class D 350 WPC design but sounds organic, analog and very full and fluid. Gives these the boost they like. Some of the newest class D designs have been really blowing my mind. I prefer a good Class D today over Class A and AB but sadly I have heard only a couple truly superb class D designs so far. Have not heard he Tri Art but am sure it's very good.
Awesome review. Never heard of them but now I'm intrigued. Can you please comment on how they perform at low listening levels. Thanks.
Can they be used w lyngdorf 3400 integrated amp?
Do you know of a way to determine how many watts are being sent to speakers at a given volume? If I were to get these speakers I'd want to make sure that I never push them beyond their modest handling capacity of 15 watts.
They use easy to drive EMS drivers (Fertin family) from France.. Do you still have the Dennis Had Inspire 300B amp? Missed opportunity if you haven’t tried it with these..
Awesome !
They sound great ..but they still
Look like a MINION 🤣
You are so right. I would buy it just because of that.
The white and black finishes even more so!
One of my favorite Norm MacDonald Polish jokes: Did you hear that Poland was going to land a probe on the sun? You can't land a probe on the sun it will melt before it even gets close. They're going to do it at night.
Do you think a sub (or a pair of subs) could help them pull off more demanding music like rock, etc?
Also, how do they stack against the SoundKaos Vox 3A you reviewed?
Thanks, great review!
I added a REL T5x subwoofer and it helps with rock.
Will be perfect as long as you can cut/filter out the first and second octave from the amp to the speakers. Let the sub take care of the first and second octave, then you can rock out. Then the drivers won’t crack.
Closer are making a open baffle sub which is also a stand for the OGY. In a small or medium size room you won’t be disappointed about the bass performance without the sub.
@@rikardekvall3433
Ahhh ok very cool. Can you explain a little more about how one would go about doing that? Would be helpful, thank you :)
@@hubertpoint10Some amplifiers allow you to set a crossover point for the subwoofer through an app. You can also do this through the Bluesound Node. So you have the Node output everything below 80Hz to the subwoofer out and the rest to the amplifier.
Hania Rani is great! All of the stuff from Gondwana Records is wonderful - I’m a big Matthew Halsall fan.
Very nice review as always, thank you!!It will be interesting if you can make a review for active speakers the Genelec G series (three or four), i think you will love them!!!
Please make a version with a different bass port...it looks more like a toy for kids now. Oh yeah...some black WBT connectors would completely finish it of 👌 with these 2 changes I would consider buying a pair 😊
Many love the way it is ported. Doesn't look like a kids toy, looks more like a speaker Apple would make. In any case I wouldn't change a thing if it were my design.
@@HiFiHuff Glad for you 🙂
Are these better than for vocals and instruments than the triangle 40 comet? And if so, are they much better? Because in my country the triangle is cheaper than these.
Oh yes. The Triangles are lovely but have a more colored mid-range compared to these. The bass is the only thing lacking here which is why they excel for some music but not all. I have the sub/stand units on the way soon to check out with these so will have a report on those down the road here soon.
@@HiFiHuff Thanks a lot!
Very cool, maybe you should make review about Diapason Karis, Astera and Adamantes. That's magical with immense and sound out of this world, and my opinion ones of most beautiful speakers I have ever seen.
Send me some and I will ; )
Perhaps review Rubanoide speakers?
lol try that song 'Alone' by Numenoreon with a subwoofer and you'll be pleasantly surprised..!
Dimensionally they appear square on the sides. Does Triangle make the drivers?
Hello. No the drivers are hand made by the EMS (Katy Fertin)
Very likeable little speakers. I don't know if the bass stand makes sense. It makes the speaker larger than their floorstanding speakers and is obtrusively shaped.
I have a set coming in soon so will post my experience.
can you have a "coaxial" with a single driver? I don't think so.
😯
I think the Devilles still outclass all your recent speakers. But thanks for this anyway.
I really like single drivers IF there is a baffle step filter or EQ to tame the rising response…otherwise they are too shouty for my preference and then you’re trying to fix that with tubes and placement.
The drivers on these are esoteric drivers handmade in France. They are also a transmission line design. I can assure you they are not shouty.
The OGY makes the KEF LS50 sound shouty in comparison.
@@mpi5850 it’s basic physics is reason for the rising response or shout. baffle step correction is needed and it doesn’t matter if it’s a french boutique or a Dayton driver. 😉
@@seanb3303I have the OGY and they're not shouty at all. You can tune the driver in the acoustic domain through the cabinet dimensions (baffle size, cabinet volume etc...). You suggest tuning the drivers through an electronic filter (and that's much easier to do but it smears the sound). Real World Audio on CZcams talks about this.
@@user-xg6zz8qs3q having a wide baffle does help with baffle step loss…Omega has designs that do that…the baffle becomes a comb filter though and you do get some smearing.
DSP doesn’t cause smearing…quite the opposite actually. I personally don’t like active DSP setups because the sound is too perfect and squeaky clean. For pro audio that is a must have though.
Shouty is a negative descriptor. You could say forward sound or mid-centric sound. A lot of people prefer that sound. Tube amps and not pointing drivers at your ears is another work around…but then you may miss out on some treble as a 4-5 inch driver will beam high frequencies…even if it speaks French or was made by hand 😉
Try Scott Bond Vs. Solarstone - 3rd Earth, original mix !! Mind blowing dance track with church vocals
The Intro mix is best.
Should be called a minion or maybe baby Gru.
I thought at first the designer was Bean the British comedian
😂
🎯👏👍🙏❤️
Do you ever listen to anything that's not special?
Yes many pieces. As I’ve stated again and again, I do not review those. They get sent back without review. Inwoood never spend days on making a review for something that I wouldn’t own myself. So yes, of course. There are many pieces out there that are just average. I’m not interested in talking about them .
boenicke w5 try
I had Boenicke W5 and W11 and the OGY is more natural, open, better harmonics, greater detail and imagery.
@@robertyates9973
Interesting... But do the Ogy disappear as well as the W5? Also, did you hear the highest level of that speaker, the W5Se+?
@@hubertpoint10OGY’s are more transparent and open with greater detail. They incorporate 5 inch EMS full range drivers so therefore don’t have a crossover. I have previously experienced other brands of floor standing full rangers in TQWT cabinets with 8 and 10 inch drivers which were directly compared to Boenicke. These FR designs (which have received many awards) had a more natural balance and increased transparency compared to the Boenickes. The Closer OGY’s compete in bass extension compared to the TQWT FR designs but are clear winners in the mid and HF bands exhibiting faster transients (smaller driver) and more detail. Hope this helps.
