Ep. 069 - Critical Duty & Critical Defense - What's the Difference?
Vložit
- čas přidán 26. 04. 2023
- On this episode, Seth is joined by Judd Jarzynka and MIL/LE Contract Coordinator, John Hasselmann. The guys discuss handgun ammunition; specifically, Hornady Critical Duty® and Critical Defense®. The two lines may look very similar but they have considerable differences. Critical Defense is the ultimate choice for any short-barreled, concealed-carry-style firearm. Critical Duty is built to meet the needs and requirements of LE/Tactical professionals as well as law-abiding citizens who prefer a full-size handgun for their personal protection. Join us as we discuss additional details, advantages, and applications of each.
Would be helpful if you could buy critical defense in 50 round boxes.
Like the HST
Well that would make too much sense.
Too expensive
@@marshalllapenta7656I buy ammo a case at a time. All the extra packaging is unnecessary. Hornady does offer Critical Duty in 50 round boxes, so it's not much of a stretch to ask them to do the same for Critical Defense.
@@marshalllapenta7656buy some other shit then. It’s still expensive if u get 20 or 100 of them.
4:30 is start of the discussion..
15:30 Critical Duty - barrier penetration 135 +P
20:30 Duty has “H” stamped in polymer tip
Thank you for this
You're the man
Thank God.
MVPbro here
The guy leading the talk my hell he can say nothing with the most words of anybody like a politician.
This could be a 4 minute video. That would be nice.
At 16:22, having said nothing on point or coherent, "I don't want to get into too many details."
ROFL, my thoughts exactly
@@markk9794 haha, "idont want to get into details" on a podcast about ballistics. Wtf?!!!
Like listening to a bunch of gaggling hens. 4 minutes in they havent eevn decided which round to start with? This should be a 3 minute video.
Could not agree more. Punched out after a few minutes. Guys, you aren't in the podcast business. You got a click because I was interested in an answer to the question, which I am sure I can google, and maybe some "level deeper" content about those rounds that might be interesting.
That would be something I would use next time I'm shopping to make an informed decision- not between CDef and CDut but between your ammo and someone else's. If I knew exactly which box I should put your 2 products in I would choose it because I'd know exactly what it's for at a level that exceeds what I know about everything else on the shelf.
I have used Hornady Critical Defense ever sense I watched some testing Paul Harrell did a few years ago. He tested several different then current HP rounds in calibers from .380 up and in barrel lengths from 2 inches and longer. Hornady Critical Defense was the only round to open up like it should and NOT over penetrate in every caliber and barrel length tested. So I have it in .38 spl., .357 magnum, 9mm, 45 APC and will get it in .380 APC.
Same here. Harrell's channel is very informative and helpful.
I think federal HST performs a lot better. Also think underwood defender outperforms all
Defense and duty should come in 50 round boxes
I’ve gotten it in 50 round boxes without issue, I’m out in arizona
Self defense ammo is very seldom ever found in a 50 qty box. Why would these be any different?
@@benjaminmoyer741not if you buy online. 50 is common for pretty much every self defense round. A lot are marked as “law enforcement”, but that really just means 50rd box.
My department ran Critical Duty very briefly. After several shootings, including one of my own, we saw these rounds completely fail to expand and passed through the target each time. Absolutely horrifying when your bullets do not work. We quickly switched back to Speer good dot.
Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST and Winchester Ranger T-Series/Ranger Bonded are still the way to go.
@@AtomicStateDelivery gold dot & the rangers are my issued ammo. I don't have to use it but Im no dummy! I have some fragmenting rounds that are the Civil Defense i believe, butt load of energy & i definitely trust them when in high populated areas.
Cant go wrong with Gold Dot!👍
@@rocknraptor3195 Liberty Civil Defense looks very interesting and I've been meaning to look into it deeper.
Do what!? They had to have been somewhat effective because you're still here. If you have the time, can you please go a little more in depth on this matter? Thank you.
I like how professional these podcasts are and how they are family friendly without bad language. Thank you for making very educational videos that can even keep my kids attention
Wow, thank you!
"In defense of your life, you're not going to have to shhot through a wall or a car door."
Bold statement bub.
...yet cops do it all the time.... all the time.
In a defense situation you might have to shoot through something! What if the bad guy is taking cover behind a door or a wall???
@@deucedeuce1572and not on purpose!! Because they don't train shooting under stress.
But true. They're talking in general.
Exactly... 2020 and the BLM terrorists ring a bell. Might have to shoot through your own windshield or car door.
Please start selling CD in 50 and 100 round blocks for a discount.
I agree with bpm990d. 50 round boxes would be great.
As someone whos shot outside in the dark in stressful situations muzzle flash is something that can throw you off if you've never experienced it before ans its reallly cool to see that you guys compensated for that
Any proven defensive round uses low flash powder. Hornady rounds are extremely overrated and overpriced when compared to the proven gold dot & HST. Both HST & GD have measurable lower flash, more reliable feeding and accuracy as well as better overall terminal ballistics. Both HST & GD in whatever grain weight can be found in boxes of 50 for 36-46 bucks a box while Hornady duty & defense forces you to purchase 20rd boxes while charging WELL over 1 dollar a round.....
I definitely know from mil use and police that that flash has to be practiced with. All aspects of duty carry should always be practiced. Good post my friend!
@@TerminalM193With respect your not making a good case here dude! Your 100% correct on one point! All modern defensive loads have flash suppressed powders(some more than others ime).
The only pistol defense ammo that I’ve seen that’s more expensive than Federal HST is the Winchester PDX1. Federal HST is a TOTL offering…$38-$50+ per 20 depending on source and caliber.
Federal makes the more reasonably priced “Punch” ammo but still $20 per 20 vs $40 per 20 for Federal HST and the obscenely expensive HST is much better ammo.
One would be MUCH better off buying Fiocchi’s Defense dynamics ammo that uses a Hornady XTP hollow point and goes for around $29 per 50 for .40S&W. That will give you the same performance as the Federal punch for less than half the price.
I’ve shot $100 and $100’s worth of Speer Gold dots. It’s good stuff all around and well proven but Gold dots don’t penetrate deep! They expand consistently & evenly but the cheaper Hornady XTP hollow point will penetrate better and still guve good hollow point expansion and energy dump!
Most gold dots nowadays are sold in boxes of 20 and even on sale are $28 per 20 for 9mm😱.
The Fiocchi defense dynamics in a box of 50 for allot less money kick the Gold Dots ass overall ime.
The Sig Sauer Elite V crown HP ammo costs around $4 per 20 less than Gold Dots and in my tests it absolutely outperforms Gold Dots for penetration and overall ballistic performance.
The only 50 round Boxes I’ve seen of Gold Fits nowadays are always 9mm and around $7 Bucks a box more than Fiocchi defense dynamics.
Hornady critical defense is around $25 per 20 .40s&w and Critical duty is $28 per 20 .40s&w.
The FTX hollow point in critical defense is the suceeor to the outstanding XTP bullet I’ve mentioned. In my tests the FTX bullets perform outstanding. I would personally rafter have the Fiocchi ammo I’ve mentioned with the XTP bullet for the price.
The Hornady Criical duty is one of my all time favorite for .357 Sig with its outstanding deep controlled expansion properties. The ammo is Top shelf and even on sale it’s obscenely expensive @ $35 per 20😱😱
4 minutes in and he is still rambling... say what you're there to say and close the video out.
Too long didn't watch version... Defense is a softer bullet designed for compact handguns or where your target is just behind clothing and over penetration is a concern (backup gun or civilian self defense). Duty is a tougher bullet for full size handguns or where you might need to shoot through barriers like walls or windshields (law enforcement scenarios).
Why even watch if you know it all?🤷
@@rocknraptor3195 because he said in a single paragraph what it took this podcast over 30 minutes to say.
Man thank you! I was not trying to watch this entire thing
There is no reason this video should be more than 5 minutes long. Listening to these guys I just couldn’t stop envisioning the Saturday Night Live skit with Alex Baldwin peddling his Schweddy Balls.
😂😂😂
I'm glad I stumbled across this . I've been using Critical Duty for a long time but I never knew what to put through my sub compacts. Thanks for the knowledge and reassurance.
I am old school as a deputy back in the 70's and 80's I carried 3 guns on duty in uniform I used a Colt Trooper Mk3 357 not in uniform on or off duty I carried a S&W model 66 snobnose 357 and a Browning DBA in 45acp the Browning is SS P220 sold by Browning before SS started selling in America I still own all 3 plus I also carry a S&W 642 in 38 most days as a old man in my late 60's ammo as something with only 5 shots in 38 six rounds in 357 and 7 in 45acp I always take into account my gun I carry is a last defense option up front and real personal with only 5 to 7 rounds I am greatful to after being a deputy to not been in a position to put my life on the line but if something would ever happen ammo is what will save or lose your life so keep up the great job of making the best ammo you know how to make today
Light carry -- S&W Model 637 in 38 +P and two 6-round speed strips.
Heavy carry -- Sig P320 in 9 mm with two 21-round spare mags, and the above S&W as a backup.
Have open and concealed holsters for the Sig.
Hey guys, I wanna thank you for this podcast because it made a big difference in the ammo that I choose to shoot
I just checked my magazines and in my 38 special it's critical defense, In my 9 mm it's also critical defense with I do have some old hydroshack's federals, My 45's have horn today critical duty.
The podcast was worth every minute and from the ballistic gelatin explaining about that to synthetic, I have been shooting horn today for quite a while even in my 22-250, 270win, 17hmr, & my 6.5cm
I want to thank you guys and for whoever watches this this will bring enlightenment to their choice of Amma both for hum and even CCW which I've had here in California for 12 years.
Wish you guys a blessed holiday with family and friends.
Thank you for your time!
I really appreciate you guys for making this video. About a year ago, I got a Tier 1 Concealed holster and at that time wanted to reconsider my ammo choice, but finding solid information on carry ammo was unreasonably hard to find. Some CZcamsrs did some testing with hard numbers, and I really appreciate them. Ended up between critical duty and speed gold dot. Ended up with the critical duty. Thanks again guys!
It's SPEER GOLD DOT...
It's probably the autocorrect my man.
@@jeffadams9807 no shit genius. You're new to auto correct huh?
I'm a first time owner at the age of 65. I've always been around them, so I never felt the need to have a personal ownership. Now I'm on my own and I missed knowing I was able to protect myself. I've not yet been to the range, but I use my I-target just about every day. It's addictive so I have to be careful, I woke up hurting the day after I got it. lol So I've been studying because I've learned there's a lot to being a gun owner today. I started with safety and understanding what needs to happen for me to get a carry license. (After 20 years I just renewed my drivers license too.) I want to do a little camping and traveling, but I'll be on my own. Being an older woman I think it's imperative that I possess an equalizer. So now that I have a good starting base of info on being responsible, I turned my attention to ammo. Yet another topic I've been far too ignorant about. I bought some after a little research, not sure my decisions were sound ones at this point. I've seen some bad things about IMI ammo. I know nothing about another brand I have. Thank you for my first lesson in ammo. I see some thought you talked too long, well I guess that's why you can listen at a much faster speed should you want. I know I do when its a topic I know well enough to just be looking for specific info. I learned something in every minute you spent talking just about, so thanks.
Hey, welcome to firearms ownership🔫. I've been into firearms since I could own them. I would like to give you my 2cents suggestions.
As for brands, this is what I recommend 1st Federal HTS, 2nd Speer Gold Dot, 3rd Winchester PDX1, 4th Hornaday Critical Defense, and last but definitely not least are Liberty Civil Defense. I recommend ONLY using these Liberty as your first mag with your carry pistol (for less weight purposes) and the first 5 rounds of your home defense pistol (for over penetration purposes). As for bullet weight (grain), 3.5in or less barrel (most carry pistol) go with 115g or lower, 3.6in - 4.4in barrel 124g, 4.5" - 5.5" barrel 147g
Hope this helps a little. Good luck with your adventures 💯🙏
Thanks, guys, for another ton of information.
Now I gotta get some, as Jerry would say
Great discussion on the differences between the two, I had actually heard the Critical Defense was also “barrier blind” from a retailer once before so wondered what the real difference was. Knowing now the difference it would almost be worth having a spare magazine of Critical Duty just incase you got into that “barricaded” shootout, say in a “active shooter” scenario so you had a little more penetration if needed.
But for us “civilians” it makes sense that Critical Defense would be better from a legal and liability standpoint since it is designed to keep over penetration to a minimum, which honestly sounds counter to what many “defense lawyers” have said over the years. Typically you hear them say to find out what your local, county, state/federal LEO’s carry and then carry the same as that shows you are looking to at least duplicate their performance and not over perform. (Ie be aggressive in choice) But the barrier issues bring up a good concern since it could be used against you by an activist prosecutor looking to make your ammo choice sound more aggressive than needed for a “civilian” self defense scenario.
Finally seems like ages since I’ve seen Dave Emery, used to see him every year at the Western CMP Games and Creedmore Cup matches in the late 2000’s before I moved away from Phoenix to the mountains of Eastern AZ and stopped competing every year there. Would be great to see him on here and to have him share some of his knowledge with everyone, I know I always enjoyed his wisdom back then.
Be nice if the elastomer insert was different color for C-Duty and C-Defense. At quick glance it’s hard to tell them apart.
I believe the cases to be different, Duty is nickel cased and Defense is brass cased I believe. If this is true, that should distinguish them apart better than the color of small red tip.
@@darthvapor6355not when it first came out no they were both nickel cased. Since they they appeared to have switched it to duty is nickel and defense is brass
@@darthvapor6355 think all mine were nickel. Critical duty insert is bit bigger. They may have made change recently, not sure.
Critical Duty has an "H" on the tip. Well, it used to but I havent messed with these in years so im not exactly sure how they come these days.
@@alm9951 they still have the H but it’s damned hard to make out. As I carry more than I shoot the H may get worn down from handling.
This was one of my favorite podcasts. I especially enjoy learning about cartage and bullet development. I would love to see one cast lead bullets. When I started reloading in the 70’s I started out casting my bullets for .38 special and .50 cal for my muzzle loader. Great job guys!
You could present all this a lot quicker, but I do like your products. A couple years ago I switched to Critical Defense as my load for concealed carry and home defense, in 38 special. I did try water jug expansion tests comparing this normal 38 special against another brand 38 +P hollow point --- and the expansions were basically identical with the Critical Defense having a lot less recoil in my snub nose.
From what I read over the years from Hornady is that Critical Defense was for barrels 3.5" & less whereas Critical Duty was for Barrels 4" & over.
Then what about Critical Defense for M1 carbine and even AR-15? They have much longer barrels.
Please explain Match Ammo, how does it differ from standard?
@@mikedupree832 Match ammo is just more reliable and consistent. They take more time and attention to detail with each round and the quality control is increased. I've fired match ammo and never noticed a difference... but that's probably because I'm not such a great shot that it makes a difference. With modern manufacturing, most ammo is very reliable and very consistent. There was one time though I weighed many FTX rounds only to find out that 2 of them had defects in the HP where a small amount of lead could be seen missing and each of those 2 bullets were exactly 4 grains in weight lighter than the rest of the rounds. With match grade ammo, these kinds of differences should not be present. Every round should be identical.
@@deucedeuce1572 Thanks, my rookie ness is showing. This is something I have heard of for rifle rounds not pistol rounds?
@@markr.1984 because you know his generalized comment needs to be very specific.....wtf
This is information that should be disseminated every few years. I had to pick through various articles before this but the first article I saw that had the accumulated facts was an American Rifleman Story in 2016, which validated the choice my research showed was THE ammo to use in my carry guns. Starting with a CW9, then PPS M2, on to my P365XL. Also, my “hot weather” guns, CW380 and now P365 380. The one thing a story can’t show you is how little recoil is felt with these rounds. It’s startling and must be felt to appreciate. Great job, guys and these points must be brought out every few years. Don’t wait 7 years again!
If there is ever a time that you are shooting at a person/people, your brain will not even register recoil
It’s .380….. of course it’s light kicking Lol 😂
Thanks for spelling out the differences, very helpful! Out of curiosity, I took a closeup of the tips of my Critical Duty rounds- couldn't find the stamped "H" in the polymer.
Same here. Did the H stamp start with recent production?
I have been using Critical Defense for years. Probably a decade. I use it in my Taurus 66 (.357) and my 45LC Derringer. Unfortunately for some reason my Sig P250 won't let me use it. Something with the tip gets jammed when loading the next round. But from a long time customer. Thank you for this product.
Recently bought Critical Defense 9 m m actually bought it for a Taurus 99. Probably should have bought critical duty. Good video thanks so much
As a retired federal LEO I will only carry Critical Duty .40 S&W as my carry ammo. Amazing ammunition.

@@markteaney8381 who do you think is going to take your guns dipshit?
I’ll save you 35 minutes. Critical Duty is designed for full size guns, and penetrates a little better because it doesn’t expand as much as Critical Defense. Long story short, compact gun-use Critical Defense. Full size gun- use either.. Duty will penetrate better, but Defense will expand better.
I have taken a vehicle defense course and critical defense 115 gr penetrated through both vehicle doors, still striking the target placed on the other side.
Windshield deflection was minimal, still giving accurate strikes on the seat target.
I enjoyed the breakdown and differences of your bullets. I carry the Critical Defense and Duty depending on what and where I am. Your bullets are fantastic quality. As far as barrier penetration and performance, only other company that matches is G9 Defense ammo and their "External Hollow Point" that round is nasty and between them and these Hornady bullets, it's a toss up, both you can stake your life on.
I super glued a 9mm Hornady bullet in my shop, i tested at my range. When someone asks me what do i need to carry? I say that one right there, expansion is amazing, i would shoot a deer at short range with this ammo. I also use Hornady bullets in my rifles for hunting. Never had a problem.
If there is that much difference between good gel and bad gel just imagine the difference between gel and an actual body
I like the way you think
Yeah, it's not even remotely like the human body. It's just a medium that is very reliable and repeatable, so each bullet can get a fair and equal test to every other bullet tested. It's also a clean solid that acts like a liquid when shot, which is kinda how the human body is, but without the mess.
Well I can say that a 9mm critical defense from a Glock 26 will take out an armadillo
@@firemedic23-5 Im not a fanboy but hornady makes killer pistol projectiles.
I see alot of people on CZcams bitch about XTPs but if you reload they are an absolute staple. Very reasonably price, very accurate, and abundant and available. They just shoot
It would depend on the gel. Also who made and did they go by the same protocol? I am in the pharmaceutical industry and we make agar plates for bacterial growth and purchase agar plates as well. When you make the plates they must have an agreed upon recipe, how much water and how much agar. Agar is just made from kelp, a seaweed found in the ocean. It gets harvested and cut and dried and powdered. I’m sure that is from the same material. Thanks for the video.
And i want the zombie max ammo to be released again. That was a fun idea. I gave a bunch of it out as Halloween gifts at a party. It was last ved by all.
Ya, good stuff man. 👍 Cool box too.
It was great marketing with the green tips, but they were probably worried some obiden zombies in office, would try to claim the company was promoting zombie hunting. I still have some.
It was always obvious from the name what they were for, but this explain why they're different. Good stuff. Thanks guys!
Every time I visit a store that sells ammo, I try to buy at least one box of either hollow points or practice rounds. And for each time I go to the range I try to replenish the qty used. Which usually is 100-200 rounds, same for rifle rounds
I absolutely love this ammo, been running it for 15yrs. 🍺😎👍🇺🇸
The best hand gun ammo period, the critical duty,
Spear gold dots are just as great if you can’t ever find critical duty.
@@HunterBidenscrack no doubt the gold dot is a iconic round, I use them quite often, but I guess I like a bullit the penetration of the critical duty, I’ve done quit a bit of hog hunting with all different types of Jhp and the critical duty will brake bones and penetrate , don’t get me wrong the gold dot and hst will brake bone two but the penetration is lacking after they hit bone
Thanks for the info but where’s the videos of the actual testing in gel? Everything you said is suppose to happen, where’s the proof? When a sales representative tells me how great his product is I’d like that to be backed up with proof.
It was stated that competitor's bullets were tested. I wonder how Hornady's bullets stack up against Lehigh Defense bullets?
You are not comparing apples to apples. Your comparing really, really good to Amazing !!!
I have those really was a choice between CD and Lehigh rounds I have both.
I have a SW 637 snubnose revolver I was worried about the +P of it in a aluminum frame revolver
I'm not shooting a 100 of Lehigh through it. But there rounds are probably better in my opinion than CD
Though I love Hornady rounds one of the better rounds
I will say this Corbon DPX solid copper round really does more damage than the CD more like a Lehigh round
I used them in 223 round deer hunting went through the guy no problem
I run Critical Defense in a Sig P365X and it shoots smoother than 115gr FMJ. Noticeably less recoil. I never took notice of the flash, but it's nice to know there is some attention given there for the shorter barrels.
Glock 17: Critical Duty
Glock 26: Critical Defense
Got it👍
With love.
Y’all talk a ton and give nothing but snippets. I appreciate the content but clear out the minutiae. ❤
So wer not hearing about Speer gold dot?
I think we should see the product in action with the gels and variables they had mentioned. Possibly with the competition. Some of the competitors’ products do come in 50 rd. boxes. So should Hornady’s. I’m sure they also come at a competitive price.
Update: Some Critical Duty and Critical Defense do come in boxes of 50. Shop around.
They had a few boxes laying there on the table. Break them out and let’s see the differences. Would have been nice.
Could you please change the color of the polymer tips to differentiate them? Maybe blue for duty and red for defense. I have both Critical Defense and Duty. And they almost look exactly the same side by side out of the box.
They do not. Duty has a nickel plated case. Defense is brass.
@@shanescatsandcannabisfarm2965 Wrong. Depending on the stock, they can come either in brass or nickel. I have Defense in both nickel and brass case. Most of my new Duty are Nickel.
What is the difference in weight of critical defense and duty in 357sig projectiles
About 5,2 pounds. Give or take an oz.
Thanks for covering this Critical topic.
Does Hornady offer any machined bullets in any of your handgun product line? RE: Underwood Extreme Defender / Penetrator which is a machined solid copper bullet. I've used Critical defense in the past, but the aspect of barrier blindness, or the lack thereof, motivated a switch to the solid copper machined bullet because it is barrier blind yet is able to satisfy the FBI protocols for ballistic gel penetration with minimal risk of over penetration. Also, the machined bullet seems to minimize or reduce manufacturing anomalies such as imbalance and center of gravity. Would like to see a discussion on cast versus machined bullets.
I like the looks of the lehigh too. Haven’t shot them…..
Watching this had me looking around in my stash of ammo and found a box of T.A.P. 200 gr +p FPD and two box of custom 230 gr xtp 45 auto. Had these for years just laying around.
Is Critical Duty suitable for 16 inch barrel velocities?
In 20 years of being asked this question, it never occurred to anyone to put an explanation on your website perhaps?
Reduced penetration or "specific penetration" is the selling point of CD. Good info to have. I've been rethinking my ammo, replacing the cheap ammo w/o hollow point, and replacing the cheap grey lead hollow points with CD ammo. This still does not replace being on target with every shot, but does reduce the potential harm to others in a self-defense scenario.
TNOutdoors9 did a LOT of gel block testing back in the day, and based on that i choose Critical Defense as my daily carry round. and I have yet to see any data that would change my mind.
kinda interested in Critical Duty, but I think I'll stuck with Critical Defense for now.
Yes, do remember TNOutdoors. Wish he would have kept making vids. He is spot on and in depth and detailed. Not like some tests I have seen. (The other vids ) "Well Bob that bullet sure seamed fast. What does it say on that box......"
I’m still upset you guys stopped making the zombie defense. People thought it was a joke and didn’t buy it, so I bought a ton on sale. 😊
I did love the zombie defense it made me smirk every time I seen it.
I remember someone saying a while back that the zombie def was the same as critical defense, I don’t know for a fact myself, but I saw it on another channel. Maybe Iraqveteran888
@@galenmarek8287I remember seeing the same thing on a video. I was thinking Paul Harrell for some reason.
Great show learn some things I didn't know.
In my experiences with critical defense it also feeds better in small guns because of the projectile shape and you don't have to force your magazine in when full +1in the chamber
Critical Defense has been my 9mm carry ammo for years (although Lehigh projectiles run in my larger guns).
I've done seen it all. An actual podcast about ammo! This could have explained in a one minute short video.
No it couldn’t be done in a minute 🙄
Why is this 35 mins??? Lol
I carried an original new Colt Mk IV Mustang .380 in 1986 to 2014- 28 yrs-as my back up on the state/county police depts I was on with Critical Duty ammo. when it was developed
I still carry it as a part of .my edc/ccw package regularly as a civilian. Though I have been in shootings with my duty weapon, I never had to resort to my back up BUT would be very comfortable doing so at close quarters and once I fired the Critical Duty I was hooked from that moment on. I like the punch it has and practice with it regularly in disadvantaged H2H positions close quarter scenarios to hit the head, under arms and pelvic girdle as many encounters have the assailant in body armor. So with those target areas I want good penetration. Again, practice is a must.
I've been using the XTP 185 gr 44 mag for years for deer hunting at ranges under 100 yds. It will knock a deer in the dirt in a heartbeat. I've never had a deer walk away from the XTP. I also load the 135 gr Critical Defense in my 9 mm conceal carry pistol.
I saw some gel tests
using the Underwood Extreme Penitrator +P+. The bullet is the Leigh Extreme Penitrator bullet, which in 9mm and larger calibers can dangerously over penitrate, but in 380, it's perfect. The +P+ load penetrates 12-14 inches. The resulting permanent wound channel close to a 9mm Extreme Defender, around 2" diameter, 12- 14" deep through denim. Military Arms Channel (MAC) did the test. Check it out...
I don't have a 380, but I run the Underwood Extreme Defender +P+ in my G19 and love it. MAC did two great videos comparing the 9mm Underwood XD against HST, Gold Dot and Hornady, one through gell/denim, and the and the second through various barriers. Great videos...
It definitely penistrated.
I don’t run critical defense or critical duty but I do run hornady American gunner 124 grain +p in my p365. All the critical duty and defense were sold out or I would’ve gotten them. I never knew one was for more of a concealed carry gun and one is more for a duty gun/ full size pistol. The American gunner runs pretty good though and I like it. I used to run it in my .300 blk out xm-15. They ran like a champ. If it has the name hornady on it when it comes to ammo. I trust it probably more than any ammo on the market.
could you make critical defense bullet that is specifically designed for 2" snubby's? Most tests I've seen shows that these 38 spl bullets over penetrate because they don't expand at these velocities. I do use 110 gr critical defense in my snub-nosed revolver.
Keep up the great engineering I love your SST bullets using for muzzleloader the best things Said slice bread but I'm use HST's or Range T 147gr or 127gr
I love my Critical Duty 135 gr. In 9mm. I would love to work for Hornady great company

Stopped at the 11 minute mark…these guys are like melba toast…
Can i use these types of bullets on a walther PDP?
Please, for the love of God, give us Critical defense/duty in 5.56.
Also, 50 ROUND BOXES!
Helpful discussion, thank you.
Well, since I'm here let me ask, does Hornady have any plans to make a .204 FMJ bullet?
In my head, it's always been simple. Didn't consider barrel length. So, it could be oversimplified, I suppose, but... Defense is designed to be stopped by medium barriers, like drywall. Duty is designed to penetrate medium barriers. One is safer for use in a home defense scenario, and the other is more effective in a zombie apocalypse.
If its just me being attacked i might try to disengage. But if the bad guy has some cover and shooting at me and others. I will stand my ground attempting to provide returned fire thus allowing my family members/others to escape. JMHO
I’ll sum up my thoughts on these… Truck gun and CCW, I am mostly worried about a firefight in or around vehicles… Critical Duty so you can penetrate the vehicle and the criminal. In home defense… close quarters, I’m only shooting what I can see, and I want a chance that I’m not over-penetrating through the neighbors’ wall… critical defense is probably a better fit.
I happen to carry critical duty, because critical defense wasn't available, and I just checked the tip of my ammo and neither the 124 grain or the 135 grain has the letter H stamped into it.
I bought some "Critical Defense" rounds for my Smith 357. The casing expands in the cylinder with a centimeter sticking (self ejected) out the rear of the cylinder. So it's stuck there the point of needing plyers to remove it. Never seen a revolver jam before. No thanks, I'll stick with Underwood
Agreed. There is a reason why ill never use them. I wont put it out there here but my .40 P229 does not like them. Straight into the vault for collection or trade only.
I will be purchasing a box of critical defense 9mm. I have used other products of your brand before and found them to be very good quality
This was helpful
How good would critical defense be if I use it for my 4595 highpoint carbine chambered in 45acp?
HST Federal 147 grain
Underwood ammo maximum expansion 105g
Underwood ammo hero 70 grain
Don't get me wrong critical duty I carry also and critical defense depending on the situation where I'm going.
I just don't like the fact that Hornady likes to market their defense ammo at a high price and I live in Nebraska. When Underwood ammo comes out loaded hot and Hornady is loaded like weak sauce. HST Federal has never failed me in all my testing
That 175gr C.Duty should be going at least 1,300 fps in the 10mm.. My box is 1,160 fps. #91256. Winchester Silvertip Defense Ammunition 10mm Auto 175 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point 1,200 fps. Underwood 10mm Auto 180 Grain Hornady XTP Jacketed Hollow Point 1,300 fps..
While not my practice loads I fill another mag with critical duty. If I need more penetration it’s duty. If it were strictly bad guys then defense loads. I always carry more than I think I’ll need. 50 give or take. Now for deer hunting. Which would you prefer @up to 125yds? Where I hunt it’s rare that you’d see that far clearly. Now it’s a rifle. Not a pistol. But I do know people who crawl through thickets to find deer. Do they make a 44mag in these loads?
My springfield xd won't cycle critical defense. I get stove pipe and failure to feed. Not sure if it's the bullet conical shape versus ball ammo round nose shape, or just an artifact in my pistol's feed ramp?
Run the CD lite in my M&P 2.0 compact its still spicy, also run it in my Glock 43.. Was my first to go to for EDC wether I take the M&P or Glock.
I was considering using either Critical Defense or Critiacl Duty in my .380 carry LCP Max. After seeing a test performed by the "Tools and Targets" channel here on CZcams, in which both rounds failed to expand and penetrate sufficiently, I changed my mind,. Standard FMJ penetrated much better and is now my carry choice.
While I like most of what was said I am going to shout out something that needs to be heard... DO NOT USE THIS TYPE OF AMMUNITION ON A 10MM BEAR GUN!!! Bonded ammunition with maximum penetration and bullet weight retention is necessary to get into the body cavity of these large predators!!! PENETRATION FIRST! DEFORMATION SECOND! There are two accounts I know of where 10mm on bears that took multiple rounds didn't get past the fat layer!!! That being said- I trust my life with Hornady ammunition to defend myself. The product is unparalleled in the industry.
Critical defense in 357 needs to come back out with the nickle cases
I know this may ruffle some feathers but... I carried critical defense for 2 years before I ever had to use my handgun defensively. I carry a S&W M&P 9 2.0 4.25 inch just so you know where I'm coming from here. Wild hog got my dog because the ammo didn't stop the hog fast enough even with 7 rounds in him. I swapped to critical defense and almost a year after I swapped a few hogs had gotten into our garden. The duty not only stopped one hog it also went through him and into another hog. My wife got me 3 boxes of underwood for my birthday and after testing 1 box against 1 box of critical duty I'd say they penetrate about the same but I like the wound channel of the duty better.
What??? Didn’t follow that
Hit placement likely had more to do with that than your round choice.
Those hogs are tough. Hit placement is everything.
@@abettermind Id say you're right except it's hard to penetrate their skulls with a round specifically made to penetrate less. The critical duty went through one hog's skull and into another hog whereas the critical defense didn't even make it through the skull of the hog that got my dog. Since then I won't carry anything except duty ammo for defense.
@@Crash32378 My assumption there would be that it had more to do with hit angle than the difference in rounds. I fully expect the Duty ammo to penetrate better, but my testing suggests that the carry ammo should have, at the very least, entered the skull with enough energy to make a mess of the insides.
But there is a fair argument to be made for heavier duty rounds being used when it comes to animals. I keep hot rounds available for such things, but prefer rounds for general self defense (against humans) that have just enough to do the job while allowing me the best chance at fast, accurate follow up shots
In a case of human over penetration, could you please site some cases that this has happened and the resultant injury to the innocent person struck by said over penetrated bullet? Thanks.
They can't because it's FAR less of an issue than peoppe make it out to be. Bystanders are injured by misses, not by hits.
I still carry rounds intended to not over penetrate, but it's because I want energy transfer.
To be fair, it's definitely something that should be considered but it's tiring watching people make a HUGE deal out of it.
NOT ONE case ever! That is just some bullcrap Massadd Ayoob the Boob was printing in his fake gun articles for years.....means nothing
Where does the American Gunner 124gr +P fall? Closer to Duty or Defense?
For the love of the invisible sky man, make your projectiles available as COMPONENTS!
I just want the bullets to load myself!! :D
What Jimmy says. Please sell me the bullets otherwise it XTP or another brand!🎉🎉😢😅😮😊😂❤
I'mAlways use Hornady for all My guns including AR Pistol,Glock 27,12ga Shotgun,.380 Taurus And some others I own.I love this ammunition And never will go with other brand ❤
I have been a concealed carrier for years. In the last couple of years I have been a part of my Church, Life Safety Ministry. We have medical members as well as members who carry. We use the FBI qualification as a minimum credential to serve in this capacity. I have happily carried Hornady Critical Defense in 9mm for several years. My question is, does this need to change in this new capacity?
One never knows what an unbalanced person may bring to the situation as an active shooter scenario. I would think most scenarios we might encounter would be served well with critical defense¿ What would you recommend?
My brother almost didn’t come home due to the failure of your critical duty ammunition in the early 2010’s. He fired several rounds into a windshield and the round was defeated and fragmented every single time with no solid strikes. There were many fragmentation wounds but the core of the bullet failed to penetrate and remain intact. It’s funny some little hick town in Kentucky could enact such a change in the world of ballistics and ammunition but it sure did.
Hello everyone. Could you guys do a short video on .380 auto. I love my Ruger LCP and am confident in its accuracy. But I'd like to hear it from you Pros as to it's real-life pocket-pistol dependability. Not compared to 9mm, but standing on its own...can I trust your 380 Critical Duty to go thru windows n doors ? Or does any barrier affect the .380 so negatively as to render it in effective? Thanks guys, you're truly a great group of professionals.
