We've seen a lot of Spider-Man lately. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and soon Spider-Man: Far From Home. Before that we saw Andrew Garfield slinging webs with Emma Stone for a couple movies, but I want you to think FURTHER back. That's right, I'm talking Tobey Maguire Spider-Man.
Remember how at the end of his first movie EVERYTHING had gone wrong? Norman Osborn - the Green Goblin - was gone, his best friend was fatherless, Uncle Ben did what all Uncle Ben's do, etc.. It was all very sad. In Spider-Man 2, we see a Spider-Man without his powers. I want to talk about WHY he lost his powers. What made our friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man just plain, old Peter Parker?

Thank you so much for the spoiler warning!☺️
yea
Yeah I was hoping someone would say that!
I remember a scene where Andrew was asking Toby’s Spider-Man on the scaffolding about why he thought his powers were lost and I remember when Toby said, “I went through some things” I realized that line had to be a reference to this theory
Mat is basically right. The movie almost outright states that he was sick. From keeping his love for MJ inside, losing his best friend, the death of his uncle and the responsibility of keeping the city safe. His powers went dormant (Like how you can't smell when you catch a cold), so he took a break and discovered that there were still people out there who appreciated him and took the good he did and spread it throughout New York City. Knowing that people were still there for him, and that people still loved him gave him the strength he needed to get his powers back.
This shows how Spider-man is still a human after all, he gets sick, gets tired and feel more pain when he's stressed or depressed
Thats one of the reasons Stan Lee liked him so much. He said multiple times that what makes Peter such a good hero is how relatable he is

You can also see this in Spiderman: Far From Home, where Tom Holland's spiderman couldn't use his spider senses.
It's because he too also went through a traumatic event, His own Death and Iron Man's, this is more than just a theory, its spot on.
Wait. Are you talking about the banana?
It was only until he accepted his flaws and became his own person that he got full control of them
Funny thing is, my mom was studying medicine when I first watched the second movie as a kid, and she already solved it before this theory came out. She said that Peter wasen't eating well and feelinf sad(Simple words for a child) wich may mean depression and eating disorders.
Also the doctor from Spider-Man 2 said it was psychological
I know I was about to say that
I mean yeah, but he never explains in what form. I knew there was guilt and anxiety, but this theory gave me a whole new way of looking at these scenes from Spider-Man 2.
True, but it wasn't fully explain d beyond 'psychological' that's a base term, like if you were to ask someone what car they have and they respond with 'one with wheels'
lee walker true
yeah this almost sort of feels like a "midichlorians" kind of thing, like it's not needed to get THIS specific on why/how something is. An average viewer can extrapolate from the psychological reasoning given in the movie to what more it could mean to have it be plenty reasonable to appreciate the movie and not feel like something substantial was left too ambiguous.
Writers of Spider-man 2: Uh, sure this is how he got his powers back.

Pretty sure Peter taking care of himself is what the writers intended just not necessarily thr specific medical digonses.

The emotional trauma reasoning has been prevalent throughout Spider-Man 2, I get the whole first movie emotional connections but they made sure to make it known in way more subtle ways in spiderman 2. He kept takings L’s till he threw away his suit.
One thing to note is that even in the comics, Peter at one point does lose his powers due to mental stress. Not as badly as in the Raimi movies, but it proves this plot point has its basis in the source material and the movie kinda sorta hints to his powers being tied to his mental state. Just not explicit and of course, like other recent comments, is confirmed in No Way Home.
Speaking of No Way Home, that whole thing at the end about saving oneself mentally is also lowkey a thing Tobey kept in mind in-universe, considering in NWH, he made sure his other selves are mentally going to be in a better place and that's beautiful

This episode actually helped me out a lot in my personal life. I liked that the topic of mental health was (theoretically) the focus of a superhero movie years before Tony Stark in Iron Man 3. I started researching depictions of mental health struggles and actual treatments used in the films, which led me to Cinema Therapy.
If you don't know them, then you should go check them out. They talk about all types of things like how Edward and Jacob are totally abusive dickholes, to Aragorn being an idol of healthy masculinity. Hearing John and Alan talking about and even openly showing emotions made me start to take a serious look at myself. Which has then led me to making some pretty big revelations about myself. I won't go into much details but now I can say that I'm truly happy with my sexuality as an openly bisexual man.
All of that, because I saw MatPat cover a topic that truly captured my attention and that's not a theory.

Makes sense, magic powers ED
Jokes aside this is the most wholesome video about a superhero suffering from mental health I have ever seen.
It may not the original intention of the director or it was either one this put in an even better depth of the Spiderman trilogy and made the second one (which it could be the best out of all three) even better than before.
You need to watch more videos about superheroes and mental issues. Cause ones that actually talk about it rather than presenting a theory and having a side objective of talking about the actual mental health stuff as well... Well, the point is one's that focus on the mental health and illustrations of the inner struggle of the hero exist.
@Veit Zeret As far as I can tell, there's nothing in the movie about PTSD, at the very least?
@@klop4228 there is, imagine being at fault or feeling at fault for the death of both your father figures. He has recurring dreams, and so on. Even in the comics, mental stress causes him to lose his power
I like to think it’s like emotional ED. The night he lost his powers, all within 5 minutes MJ scolded and rejected him, Harry slapped him, John announced MJ had agreed to marry him, and Jonah made Peter photograph MJ and John kissing.
I cant belive that this theory was proved 2 years after this was uploaded. In Spider-Man No Way Home toby Miguire tells the other 2 spidies about how he lost his powers for a while, they asked why and he sayed AND I QUOTE "existential crisist"

Oh fuck
Great video! I never really stopped and thought about the mental health. Just goes to show you how well these films were made back then. I always thought it was a great "if this be my destiny" moment. Peter loses his powers and it was the people that brought him back. He cant stop a mugging, saves a child from a burning building, only to find out there was still one more person in there. MJ gets kidnap, fights doc ock on the train, finally saves the people and then it's the people that save him from falling off the train. That's when he knew this was his destiny. Saves the girl he loves and then shes at his doorsteps. MJ comforts him and makes him feel so secure and content with his life. Maybe that's why he was so arrogant and cocky in the third movie.. Love the rami films, I could watch them over and over again and still enjoy them
Actually the reason for his power loss is because he didn't admit his feelings, and when he sees the one he loves in danger, that's how he gets his powers back

Erick Mii not agreeing and thinking a theory is bad are two different things just so your aware.
They actually address the reason why in Spider-Man 2 albeit very briefly. When Peter is talking to octavius about his love life, octavius mentions that matters of the heart can weigh a person down and manifest into physical weight. Both times he lost his powers were in direct response to complications with MJ.
Even heroes suffer depression.

Not to mention the events in the early part of the movie where Doc Oc showed up at the bank and kidnapped Aunt Mae and Spider Man had to save her.

When I was younger, I was also think about this "emotional trauma effect situation" to Peter's power and how he lost his power base on metal health ... Now MattPat detailed it more clear and more scientifical, added with nostalgia and theory :0

I was thinking the exact same thing. It’s not spelled out in the movie(a lot of things in movies aren’t) but he tells the doctor “in my friends dream I’m Spider-Man” so I can’t imagine the doctor actually thinks a healthy 20-something year old man is looking for medical advice because of a friends dream.
I'm rewatching the Spider-Man films and am on the second film and just wondered this question and remembered that matpat did a film theory on it! Thanks Matpat!
Doc ock said that if he held love inside.. He would get sick, so he did. His love for mary jane deeply affected him.
That's honestly what I thought
He should’ve had a love for a different Mary Jane, maybe he woulda been fine
This can still be true but coincide with the theory. He loves Mary Jane and wants to distance himself from her because he doesn't want to go through losing her like he did Uncle Ben, and her life was already threatened once. So she's both a part of his past trauma, and her well being is a huge focus of the anxieties that his PTSD brings about.
Also I’m pretty sure that since he didn’t want to be Spider-Man anymore his powers went away.
Exactly
He lost his powers when he doubted himself and his soul reason to be Spider-man.

When you slowly realize MatPat not only diagnosed Peter with emotional trauma, but you as well...I need help 😔
Seriously, same here. however, if you can fight the depression and start working out, it helped me a lot!! It was really hard to actually get out and start, and I’m not really sure what it is about exercise, but that really helped my mental health. Also, start small by making sure to make your bed every morning. I know it sounds dumb and insignificant but it goes a long way. It gives you a small psychological boost to start your day. Once done, it releases a small amount of endorphins from completing a task. That’s why made beds are such a big thing in the military, it breeds discipline. Its your first task of day, and if you can’t complete that task ,how do you expect to complete the others of the day. And worse case scenario, if you have a bad day, you come home to a made Bed :) . Wish you the best stranger.
Realizing that you need help is the first step to getting it. It's up to you to figure out and decide how to get it. Whether through self-care with exercise and such, or reaching out to others, friends, family, or even a therapist, I hope you find something that works for you. Conditions like yours, and like mine, are real issues, and it's okay to care about yourself and your needs.
I will be praying for you. While I don't know exactly what you're going through, I do know that Jesus will always be there for you, no matter what, no matter who else fails you. Just run to him.
God bless.

Ok,so I know this is outta left field, and super late, but Peters Doctor ABSOLUTELY knows Pete is Spiderman, and is totally chill with it, even keeping the secret so well even Pete doesn't know he knows 😂
2:06 , unsolved for the past 17 years, even though Spider-Man 2 was released in 2004, this video must be from the future.
He used pizza time

Time travel exists
Actually, it was explained in the movie. Peter loses his powers from self-doubt and losing his purpose. And as Dr.Octavius says "If you keep something as complicated as love stored up inside it's gonna make you sick." He struggles throughout the movie with a choice to be Spider-Man and take responsibility, or live the easy life and get the girl. And he chooses the easy life, and this makes his powers take a back seat. He chooses this path, after discussing his "dream" with the doctor, and the doctor explains that maybe he shouldn't be Spider-Man. And he doesn't take back the mantle of the wall-crawler until Aunt May's speech, there's a hero in all of us. And after he saves a little girl from a burning building, but fails to save someone else, he realizes he has to take responsibility and be Spider-Man. When he jumped off of the roof to test his powers again, they don't immediately kick in, but the moment he needs to save the life of the woman he loves; his power kicks back into overdrive. And I think this is a good explanation of why he lost his powers, that is explained in the movie itself. :) (I enjoyed the intro btw)
Edit: Yes, his theory goes a little more in depth, to what happens in the movie. However, he acts like it never gets explained in the movie, and it is a mystery to the audience. 2:01 ^_^
I was thinking this myself
Not surprisingly the reason for it that is explained in the film is something he just seemingly forgot about.
@@justanordinarycritic4953 he even mentioned the doctor that told him that
I mean, what do we honestly expect from Matt, a guy who seems to only be able to make half baked theory’s that are easily debunk able.
I really hope MagnaKamen does a video on this video.
What Mat-Pat is saying here is really fleshed out in the Into the Spiderverse short on anxiety.
I love that you subtitle all your videos :))))
This was explained in the movie and is pretty straight forward. Spider-Man was ruining Peter's life. He stopped believing in himself and Uncle Ben's lesson of responsibility. Peter was losing himself and the will to go on, therefore causing him to lose his super-human abilities. It isn't until he re-accepts his responsibility by rejecting MJ that he gets them back.
Yea also in spider man the spider verse.miles has to calm down to stop sticking
You'll be surprised how much the power loss subplot went over peoples heads.
Red Raptor Writes my friends and I always look back at that movie realizing that he just couldn’t get it up!!! He lost his ability to keep it up!!! It wasn’t until the woman that you know he’ll do anything for was in danger... He had to realize that he never lost the ability to get it up he just had to realize he still could do it!!!
I always saw the fact that in the movie Peter loses his powers as a consequence of him rejecting his powers and not wanting to be Spiderman anymore, I never really questioned it, but this gave me a new interesting look on the movie! Really fun theory! I think I'm gonna subscribe!
HE'LL YEAH MAT PAT NEEDS MORE SUBS HE'S NOT POPULAR ENOUGH
Exactly! He might be suffering from the pressure and stress from all things he had to go through
The neighbor girl's name is Ursula and she treats Peter much better than MJ.
You didn't have to do gwen Stacy like that matpat. 'cue flashback and tears'
