The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Johnny was great in this song and was having fun with it, doing an almost "Bobby Darin style" approach to this number. My one objection is that band was WAY TOO LOUD and overpowered his powerful voice....Had the band been tuned down about 15%, this would have been totally stellar....Even so, Johnny Mathis was incredible in this clip!!!!!!

I'm not quite sure if this is the right song and style for Johnny, but still, what an outstanding talent he is, just wonderful.

This performance strikes me as Johnny Mathis being a good sport with some manager or producer's suggestion.

With his great vocal range and feeling, handsome Johnny could have been a great jazz vocalist; instead, he opted to go pop-commercial.

Thank goodness Johnny Mathis is still with us (as of this writing). I don't think The Lady is a Tramp fits Johnny well, though. He was more into romantic ballads than hard-hitting songs that suited Sinatra. But here it is, though. And he tries his best. Thank you for this Ed Sullivan Show segment from late '58 on CBS-TV.

Give Johnny a break. Sure, he’s got sugar in his shoes but he still knows about the bitches and hoes.
