The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

There is no singer today who comes close to Johnny. Some opera singers, yes; but not in pop music.

JOHNNY MATHIS -- Love Look Away
Up early, to check to see what I'm missing on “Siriusly Sinatra.” At this moment, something I never heard before: The voice of a very young (1961) Johnny Mathis on full operatic display. I'd forgotten, if I ever knew, the power - beautifully harnessed tenor power - he could summon for a live performance. Where it counts, right? Remember, Mr. Mathis is still astonishing audiences today. My friend Calabria Foti has played 'first violin' with accompanying orchestras and just 'loves him to bits.'
The song is from Rodgers & Hammerstein's FLOWER DRUM SONG, the same year Johnny Mathis introduced it to the world at large, on 'The Ed Sullivan Show.' You need to understand that, in those days, everyone and his brother did a “really big shew” impersonation of Ed Sullivan. No one better than family friend Rich Little, then a budding impressionist at a high school in Ottawa Canada. Rich wasn't the first, with the 'really big shew' merely the best (then and now).
Now then, "Johnny Mathis and 'Love Look Away'."
Thanks Ed Sullivan Show for sharing. Celebrated elsewhere this day (4/1/2024) search " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition, Songwriting Workshop, Harmony Central "

Arranged by Nelson Riddle. This beautiful song was included in the album “I’ll Buy You a Star” that they had recorded together the previous year.

Sure can't miss that opera training here. Often wonder how his dad knew how training would help and how he found the best teacher for his son.

Growing up, I had a special affinity for Jonny Mathis. His brother was a toll booth operator on the Golden Gate Bridge. Somehow I felt like I knew Johnny personally because my Dad would hand his brother the money to go across the bridge. Go Figure!
Yes we are blessed to get to watch these clips. Some of them I can actually remember sitting in the living room with my family watching the very clip being shown on You Tube (not this one though)😕. Its kind of like time travel. Again, I always appreciate your nice words. 😁

Before someone questions the lack of microphone (and therefore was he lip-syncing or not?), The Sullivan Show was a pioneer among early American television shows in the use of overhead “boom” microphones. Thus, one such mic was above Johnny capturing his perfect pitch.
And if you don’t understand why he is singing forward to the audience and not facing up toward the mic position, that is because the mic is just that good in terms of both quality and the depth of nearby sound it can capture. Such devices were highly expensive back then so only the most successful shows that could consistently earn the most advertiser dollars had them. They are still fairly pricey; In part of my time, I’ve spent a portion of a year in a local broadcast TV station which had a boom mic, but only one.

in 62 Tony Bennett would perform at Carnegie Hall and record the event later issued as an LP.
it happens to be one of Bennetts greatest albums ever....that night he would sing this song and i hope you all go listen to it because it is many times superior to Johnnys version here....

NOBODY LOVES JOHNNY MATHIS MORE THAN I, BUT THIS IS INFERIOR TO HIS FINE MERCURY RECORDING. FURTHERMORE, THIS WAS SIX YEARS INTO HIS RECORDING CAREER, WHEN SOMETHING STARTED GOING WRONG WITH HIS VOICE, CAUSED BY SOME SORT OF A DRUG A DOCTOR PRESCRIBED FOR HIM. THE EXACT DETAILS ARE IN A WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE. ONE CAN SEE THE OBVIOUS STRAIN AND TENSION HE WAS UNDER, STRANGE FACIAL MOVEMENTS, NOT HANGING CERTAIN NOTES, ETC. SOMETHING JUST WASN'T RIGHT HERE.🥺😵‍💫🥶
