First heard this song and the superb album it comes from when I was 20 and very much in love.I am 84 now and still think Mathis is magic.

FYI - Mr. Mathis held the last note for 8 full measures. For those unfamiliar with the intricacies of music, that equals 32 beats. What makes it impressive is the tempo (speed) of the song is about 70 beats per minute. That is a slow Andante tempo which one can characterize as a slow walking speed. It can only be pulled of by a superbly trained musician, with a voice in tip top shape, with a highly refined sense of style.

Every time I play this, that last note seems to get longer and longer!!!!!! (and by the way, I play it every day!!)
This was on the Tonight Show. I remember watching this in 1978. He explained how he could inhale while singing. Theoretically he could hold a note endlessly.

Well this live performance by Johnny Mathis blew me away. I just didn't know he had that much power in his voice to hold a note that long. I guess we learn something new everyday. Johnny Mathis is a singer that can't be compared to anyone else💯 as he's just that good 🎶💋🎶

Someone should do a CVD of all of Mr. Mathis appearances with the Tonight Show Orchestra during the Johnny Carson era. These will be lost forever and its a shame they are some of his best works.

Sorry. I have to post again. Since first seeing this I have come back to it many, many times. Why? It is such a great summary of what makes Johnny Mathis so special. He sings tender moments and let-it-rip moments, breath control, amazing ability to phrase the message of the song, dynamic voice range, perfect diction and pitch, to-die-for good looks and humility. A total package that is unsurpassed. Wish I had been one of the lucky ones to see this live but grateful to see it on CZcams.

I'm only 28 but I grew up on Johnny Mathis. I used to dance around the house to all his records. My mom took me to my first concert when I was 11. There is absolutely no one that can touch him. There's not a singer out there today could even come close to his voice. It's pure magic.

John is a sheer gentleman on and off stage. He's remained unaffected, unassuming and kind. He used to come to Palm Springs in the 80s to play in the Dinah Shore/Nabisco celebrity golf tournaments at Mission Hills Country Club. He's a once-in-a-generation talent.

I've watched this hundreds of times and each time, I'm still amazed that anyone can do what he does with this song. I've been a life long well fan for over 60 years. He is truly a national treasure.

I believe Johnny understood pretty early on what he had, and went for the type of career he has had quite deliberately. In any case, he has made a brilliant career cultivating, maintaining, polishing and sharing a really magnificent talent with the world. I for one am so grateful. The sound of that voice is one of life's sweet delicacies.
In my opinion, simply the best male voice in pop music history. Unlike many others, the man doesn't have a "dig me" bone in his body. One of life's greatest treasures.
I believe your comment about his not having a "dig me" bone in his body makes him even that much more amazing. If you listen when he takes a seat after performing, at about the 5:00 mark, Johnny Carson says, "Gorgeous!," and JM says a very soft, humble, and modest, "Thank you!" To me it speaks volumes about a super talent.
Many great singers but Johnny doesn’t seem as though he knows he’s great or greater.

I attended a "Valentine's Day" concert by Johnny Mathis at Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan's Lincoln Center on Thursday, 24 Jan 74.
His rendition of Pieces of Dreams brought down the house.
Of course, a number of his other songs, both before and after, also resulted in his receiving standing ovations.
Johnny Mathis' performance that evening was unbelievable!
And it has stayed in my memory for 41 years.
I remember hearing him sing this one on Johnny Carson's show, left Johnny Carson speechless. His remark was "well that takes care of that song once and for all".
Greatest singer loved him since I was 16.
Always hoped to find a version with Carson's comment. It was perfect as was Johnny's performance!

In this particular genre of music, vocals don't get any better than this. An incredible big band and a most spectacular showing of skill from a very athletic man that had to make a decision on whether he was going to accept his invitation to the Olympic tryouts or be a singer. He was forced to make a choice and the choice is clear. He was born in little old Gilmer, Texas along with blues legend Freddie King and Don Henley of the Eagles. Something was in the water!

Never was a fan of Johnny Mathis until I heard him sing this song on the Johnnie Carson show.
I count myself as one very fortunate person to have actually watched him sing this live when he appeared on the Tonite Show.
I went to work the next morning and told all my co-workers what I had witnessed the previous night.

The whole song is incredible-------and then-----he gets to that unbelievably long, spectacular ending note. No words. I have been a Johnny Mathis Fan for decades, but I had never heard this song before!
What can be said that hasn’t been already said? The voice, the range, the diction, the breath control can never be matched by any singer before and that includes Sinatra, Bennett, Torme and even some of the opera greats. His voice is a gift from God to him and for us to enjoy. I saw him do this song at Lincoln Center and Westbury in the 70s and it mesmerized the audience as he held that last note “forever”. To see him do it on the Tonight Show and play it over and over again is special. I will ask my children to play this song when It’s time for me to be with our Lord.
He finishes The Mother of All Held Notes and then smiles, puts his hands in his pockets, and casually walks over to Johnny and Ed like he's grabbing a scotch at his home bar. Effortless class and humility personified.

I'm lucky enough to have family that live down the street from him, so sometimes I live down the street from him, too. See him in the grocery often, Bristol Farms, Pavilions, Ralph's, etc. Just love him. He is the sweetest man in the world! And the most talented!
Singularly the greatest voice that we will see and hear in our lifetime. The first time I had to see him in concert, I was reluctant and critical before he ever stepped on stage. This was at the now defunct "Latin Casino" in 1970.
His first song was "In the Morning of my life ". I was addicted to that incredible voice.
Since that time, I saw him in every venue that he performed in Metropolitan Philadelphia area. Each time his performance was a virtuoso.
The saddest point of all of this is that it will someday soon be silenced.
We'll have his recorordings, but will be cheated of his live performances. If there are sins, this should be at the top of that list.

I was in L.A. for many years as a studio singer...worked with Johnny at Universal City Amphitheater.....it was a great time and concert....We also did a benefit concert for APLA......he's a great guy and an amazing singer....He is alot of the reason I wanted to be a singer......and ended up in L.A working with him.....a dream come true....
I think I have looked at this video 100 times. The most important thing is not the 29 seconds at the end but, is the fact that this most magnificent moment was captured on the magnetic tape. The composition, Johnny's voice,Johnny's image,the production, the Tonight Show Orchestra, etc., they were all part of the role in this magnificent moment. When we view this video,it is as incredible as standing in front of a Vincent Van Gogh painting and breathing it into your heart and your soul. :)

This is by far one ofJohnny Mathis's greatest songs. As usual he sings magnificently but it is the story in the song that makes it so intriguing. My interpretation of the song is about how so many of us go astray, we don't know what we want in life we don't know how to find it, these type of people always find excuses for not moving on in their life and going out into the world to discover what would be the best fit for them . 🌎. There are just some people in this world who just never get it. They never find the true meaning of home which is normally right in front of them , believe it and you can achieve it is my motto ! However not true for everyone as certain people continue to look in all the wrong places and keep making the same damn mistakes! For some of us were lost, even though they're trying they just can't seem to find rhe right direction they should be heading in just as I've watched my son do just that, going in the wrong directions in order to ultimately fulfill his dream . 💔 I know this because I have a son , as I said who feels he never gets a break and can't even envision what it would like for him to be in life where he grows up into something wonderful ⁉️ Life is very complicated and sometimes if you don't have a mentor or someone that you can look up to, like my son who lost his father many years ago and so therefore this song expresses the essence of my son's life 🌎 . So my son has been for a few years now , never able to express what he wants out of his life and thus how to make his dreams come true🙏 so as my son struggles to find bit by bit where he is supposed to be in life just like the song says ,🎶🎶the pieces of his dreams will never fit until !! 🎶🌹🎶he is no longer baffled and confused. However in the end I think if we believe in Hope, hope that one day my son Will fish in the river and all the pieces of his particular dream will fit and lastly he will be 🏡 home🎶🌹🎶

Oh my goodness! That note in the beginning set the stage for what he ended with. That ending note was spectacular!! Especially with the horns playing which underscored it!!
