  • My riding mower would not crank so I went through each safety switch to test for continuity. My problem ended up being in the solenoid. I hope this video is helpful to other having issues with their mowers electrical system. Click the picture at the end of the video to see how to test the solenoid. There is also a video showing the location of each safety switch on a riding lawn mower.

Did you manage to do this? My mtd mower I bought second hand has this interlock switch hooked to the PTO. I'm by no means a small engine mechanic, but I'm hoping if I can connect the correct spades together it will just bypass it.

@@jm-qk2di my switch was different. It works when I push in the brake/clutch. I ended up cleaning it up because it was Filthy and reconnecting it that fixed it.

I am testing a mower seat switch for continuity with only 2 spade terminals, know how to test (like your video) but unclear on the result. I am getting "000" with the switch open. When it is depressed all the way in I get " 1" Would this be a good or bad switch ?

Tom Dee The switch is good. Basically, if the reading changes when you push the switch it’s good.

Thank you. It's weird how it would be opposite of yours. It is listed on parts site as NC/NO

your hands blocked your multimeter screen, could't see the reading results. Also, Though I'm a little, little bit deaf, I didn't hear the beep but once, and you stated the switch was good, I'll take your wood, Is it possible that the switch could indicate continunity but have too much of resistance for elictrical current flow?

These switches are super basic. On or off. There is no need to read the multimeter. Either they have continuity or they don’t.

I appreciate what you and others do to help people diagnose electrical issues. Here's the problem.
    1) You assume everyone has and knows how to use a multimeter.
    2) You assume everyone has a beep feature and knows to set to continuity or ohms and what the ohm reading should be or where they need to set their meter.
Plenty of people know what you're talking about but lots don't. You would do well to share as though you're talking to a 6 year old. Helpfull video though.

I have a sst16 John Deere lawn mower and when I try to turn on the blade they wont come on.

David Brown The main deck belt has a tension pulley that is engaged with a spring when the PTO is turned on. Check to make sure the spring isn't broken.

would that make the main belt not come on too.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  Před 7 lety

David Brown I am not sure what you mean. There is a main deck belt that spins the blades. There is also usually a drive belt or two that make the mower go forward and reverse. I think your issue is with the main belt on the deck of the mower. Find the tension pulley that moves and make sure there is a good spring attached to it.

You may benefit more from this video I made showing how to replace the main deck belt. It references the tension pulley and shows how it should function. czcams.com/video/SdG61kFMEEc/video.html

Ok. I have another question. Would the brake sensor have anything to do with the blades not turning on. when I have the brake set the mower shut off and it never happen before

Randall Wilhelmi The readings on the multimeter don’t matter. You are only testing for continuity so the sound is all you need.

F Mat Sorry. Camera angles were difficult prior to having a tripod. This was filmed with my phone on a board suspended from the ceiling! I was also only using the tone on the multimeter so I didn’t need to see multimeter.
