Every night, my 4 year old daughter asks me to watch Jay Leno's garage before bed. We talk about cars and laugh at Jay's humor. Tonight, her and my 6 year old son watched this episode. When Jay talked about not being able to fit a McD's single patty through for gaps, they both laughed hysterically for several minutes with tears coming from their eyes. These are moments I'll always remember. ...and I agree, the manual transmission is the way to go on this car and most cars.
She's asking to watch the show, that's how you know you raised her right!
@Seth Friedman Dang bro! I just came here to enjoy some cars and pass that passion on to the next generation.
@Social Outcast Exactly. Manual transmissions save lives!
That is so cute!
Always treasure these moments with your kids. Before long you will realize these memories are far more special than any car.
I loved this vid. No frills... no manufactures input. Just a man and his love for cars and his genuine opinions.
I’m one of those guys that have put 140,000 miles on my 911. Just did an engine rebuild and looking forward to the next 140,000. I always smile when I see the stone chips on the front bumper.

Watch his episode driving a Tesla: nothing like a torque smile!
He is, in fact, not doing launch control (properly). There's no display of it on the dash, which you most certainly would see. He only revs it to 2-3k too.
A proper launch control is 1. put it into sport plus and put the PDK into automatic. 2. floor the accelerator ALL the way to the floor until you depress the kickdown button on the ground directly behind the pedal. It will set its own revs. 3. it will then start bouncing off the rev limiter. Release the brake.

I appreciate that Jay can present and respect 100 year old vehicles, the most current of vehicles and everything in between
Maybe busy watching the Goodwood races online all weekend.
Jay is being really nice, and he keeps saying how it's not 'pure'. You can't see the engine and that DOES separate you from the car. It's part of the experience. I want to see the engine and imagine it shifting in the mounts as I'm driving. It's not because Jay is old: Singer makes good money selling that experience. I know Porsche has to do this because of regulations and lawsuits, but the car is less, no doubt. You know those crappy old 70s and 80s cars? They are more fun to drive than a brand-new Honda Si. A 1980 Pontiac Phoenix is more fun than that.
Agreed
I'm picturing Jay on the side of the highway setting up cameras and driving by to come back and get them..to get a few seconds of footage! I'm sure people stop and talk to him..shows the dedication he has to putting out these videos for us for free! (Free for us) Thanks for everything you do Jay! ✌️
I doubt that Jay himself does that. I’m sure he has a crew on these trips that he films that take care of that for him.
I love the classic hard top 911, but the targa is the look I fell in love with when I was a kid in the 80’s.

Just be crying shame all his colllection gets broken up. I certainly wish nothing but good health and long life for Jay. Far as new Porsche I am not big fan of looks. Very bloated looking to me. I have not driven one so I do not know how wonderful it is or not. My Porsche I want is 991.2 Turbo or 997.2 S or Turbo.
Currently own a 2017 Targa and truly love it. I am also obsessed with Jay's channel over the past 4 years. He has truly become the icon of the automotive world. I also think the engineering world owes him gratitude because if you really listen that is his true passion.
One of my favorite car reviews- Jays raw impressions, without all the tech details. Excellent
I always thought a boxer engine was called that because of the opposing cylinders. That’s why watching Jay is so great. He is the top expert about vehicle history. I never finished one of his videos without learning something. Thanks Mr. Leno!
I had heard the same, but I think Jay has it wrong. I am just conjecturing here, but Porches early engines and Volkswagen's of course were 4 cylinder. If you would look at the top of the pistons in the horizontal plane, you would see two pistons coming out and back in to the cylinder bores, like two gloves. I think thats how the flat engine design got called the boxer. Jay's explanation doesn't make sense because all cranks, as they turn will have the rod journals coming over the top. Anywho, i love the video and Jay anyway.
I thought it was based on the stroke being square or something like that. Probably depends on who you are hanging around with....
From Subaru website: "The 'Boxer' engine is so called because the movement of the engine's pistons resemble the movement of a boxer's fists in the horizontal plane."
The boxer analogy is most closely resembled by a flat 4, as daimler's, porsche's and volkswagen's early engines. Once you go to a configuration of more pistons, 6, 8, etc. Well, the analogy is not as close, as no boxer that I know of has more than two arms, but I guess the name stuck.
I must disappoint you, because actually he knows quite less about the modern 911 models! He is talking about "rear wheel drive" with this car, not knowing that the Targa models have only AWD! There's no RWD Targa!
On a boxer, the pistons are connected to separate cranks opposed at 180 degrees, so both pistons go out, then they come back in, so pairs of pistons "box" each other.

I've always LOVED the targa top. My favorite body style of the 911.

I grew up in Germany as my Father was in the Military and we had 4 tours of 4 years there. The Porsche was Not the car we craved over. If it had a V-8 we drooled over it. But now at 62 my son-in-law Forced me to test drive the 911. Well, that's all it took. I bought it. What the Hell took me so long to at least test drive it. By the way, I still haven't gotten bored at using the launch control. Next time Jay, hit the button first. Put your foot on the brake and hit the gas. The car will rev up to 5 thousand, as which time you just release the break and you will Really launch the bad boy.

RWD, manual transmission, heavy steering, super stiff suspension, no traction control, that's a sports car.
I have to agree on the Targa top, cool styling but a lot of added weight and the simplicity of a slick top roof is more pleasing to the eye. I would run from an automatic too, I love to shift, it is a simple pleasure that is hard to describe.
Agreed all around. But if a Porsche exec knocks on the door and I’m forced to decide between a Targa or a Cabriolet, it’s Targa all day. I do really dig the old SWB air-cooled Targas, but must admit the Coupe is perfect in lines and proper rigidity while the Cab ruins the look of that wünderbar teardrop. And don’t get me started on slant-noses. Blecchh.
Agree with you, love the coupe, over the Targa, also would go for a manual
The Targa weighs 242 lbs more. I'd pass on it too. I would take the PDK over the conventional manual however. I'm done with shifting.

Excellent, thanks for posting Jay! It's extremely impressive, love it, love the targa top - however - if it were me, I think I'd prefer a less "fussy" top if that makes sense? I get the whole theater of it but I think I'd be happier with just a standard, one piece, removable top like a standard Corvette. I know that's heresy to say that but there you go.
If you want open air motoring, buy a convertible or a motorbike. I've had a couple targa top cars and they're a PITA to deal with.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH I currently own a targa and I've owned it for over 10 years now and it's actually pretty awesome. It doesn't have to be this complicated, uber expensive thing which Porsche has turned it into was my whole point.

I've come to appreciate AWD in a 911 on dry pavement. Jay mentions in passing that it's really stable, and that's exactly what I like about it. The car really wants to over-rotate due to the weight in the rear, and the AWD makes that a non-issue for a guy who isn't an expert race car driver. The car feels ridiculously planted and safe in a way that no that no previous sports car I've owned has felt.
As a Porsche owner, Jay’s comparison to a high end shotgun is spot on. One word: precision.
Every time I use the turn indicator in my '68 Camaro I chuckle at that comment of Jay's about breaking chicken bones. I've heard him use that line a few times and it's always funny. Jay, these videos deserve a community service award in these challenging times.
Just look at all the panel gaps! Crazy precision! Tesla, look and learn 🙊
Go look at the panel gaps on a 356 Porsche and get back to me. Porsche has been building their cars since 1948, they've had 72 years to perfect the process. The Model S from Tesla has been out for 8 years.
