- This is how to replace the pull cord on a Stihl MS180C. It's a little bit different to other Stihl chainsaws. Easy to do though. Don't pay the shop. Do it yourself!

Thanks for the great video!
For those who are doing this, try not to remove the white spool, and if you do, try not to remove the coil spring!
Thank you for this video....my cord did not need changing but the mechanism failed to flex out meaning the cord wheel never gripped. Oiled and working now. Good stuff!
To anybody watching this fine tutorial, I'm sorry for the poor video quality. I wrongly chose to use my Iphone instead of my GoPro to film this.
Your video came in very handy. Thanks a million!
+SuperSammy1977 You're welcome 😊
Mate you've done some pullin on that sucker to wear it out, good instructional video, nice tips. You keep her clean, wanna come and give mine a service for me, its putrid. Cheerz
Good tips, thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you.
I hope this vid is helping everybody. All comments are welcome :)
Hey Tonus, I upgraded and bought it 2nd hand with a bung pull cord. For sure, let's service yours!
i did take the white pulley off and how do i tighten it back up thanks
Great video......decided this time I'll try it myself. This is the third time I have broken the pull cord, and have not used it all that often...and I'm not that strong. Must be doing something wrong, have been careful after the first time, that I'm not pulling at an angle etc etc Have an 8 year old chainsaw and never had any problem....Anyone else having the same problem or any suggestions????
I have the same problem, used very little and the cord is all must broken starting to fraye! Note: only the Stihl brand rope will work!
careful not to pull that white pulley off or the spring goes BOING!! and you have to wind it back in and its a bugger. Yes I did that.
Fred Smithy Agreed mate. That wouldn't be helpful happening in the middle of the dismantle process. Hope it worked out for you in the end.
how did u tighten it back up

I've only done this repair the once so I can't tell you exactly. From memory it slips on and then needs to be wound counter clockwise (which means the rope gets wound clockwise).
wind it clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Dale Holiday The pull cord winds clockwise Dale :) Is that what you meant?
salam1man yes, thanks. I was looking at it from the spool perspective. the cord goes on clockwise which makes it look like the spool goes counter clockwise at the same time. all clear.
why did the rope break?
It was just worn from old age. I bought it as a 2nd hand chain saw.
Mine is fairly new and broke!
Exactly how my cord broke. Bad design
Poorly done, why not show it step by step as it's done instead of starting in the middle.
